Florida absolutely needs Bobrovsky to significantly and noticeably outplay Samsonov. Both teams can play better and the penalties likely won’t be so unbalanced this game. I think it comes to goaltending as the two teams are pretty evenly matched overall, despite the discrepancy in regular season points. The Panthers have been playing good hockey for a stretch now and are looking more like last years President’s Trophy team than the team that struggled out of the gate.
When you spend $10.0 million on your goaltender, and the other team is only spending $1.8 million on their goaltender, then you need your goaltender to be a big advantage for you.
Otherwise, you simply aren't getting a positive return on your investment.
Toronto's goaltender is ranked 50th in the NHL in terms of salary cap hit. I am not saying he is the 50th-best goaltender in the NHL. He is much better than that. But he still is only 50th in salary cap hit.
Any team wanting to beat Toronto is going to have to make Toronto pay the price for investing so little in a goaltender, so little in a player that plays all 60 minutes of the game.
This is especially true when Florida is the team with the goaltender who is ranked 1st in salary cap hit.
