Mantis was awesome. He has his Homer Simpson moments but I can't wait to see him in 2 years just controlling the ice.

This trash bag league needs to find consistency. Enough of "interpretation" calls. Make a hard line on it so there is no guessing. If a guy gets pushed in any form by a defender it's either a goal every time or not a goal every time. Same with the "kicking motion". Either allow all goals off feet or none. It's not that hard.

And god have mercy on anyone who gives me shit today

Tough, tough loss. At the same time it was a good experience for the kids, especially the defense. As long as we win Game 2 I still think we take the series.

So, we played like shit and the Pens still needed to be gifted a 5 v 3 and a goal reversal to win. I'm still feeling pretty confident.
As bad as the goal reversal was, the cross checking call to give the Pens the 5v3 was worse. That hit happens every single game countless times. It happened in this game many times and that was the only time it was called. It's very frustrating when the refs decide to make themselves more of a story than they need to be.
With that said, Mika, Trouba, Goodrow, Vatrano, to a lesser extent KAM, all played poorly. They need to step it up if we are winning this series.

Didn’t watch the rest after OT1 cause who’s got time for that but they deserved to lose.

They chased hits and tired themselves out in the first period and it screwed up the rest of the game.

They better adjust for game 2

Also clear as day Panarin is injured, which is not a good sign

I’m totally lost as to what goalie interference is anymore. The NHL has totally made it a mystery and last night call is possibly the clearest example of a defensemen pushing a guy into a goalie with the attacking player having no chance to stop and yet that’s still waved off as no goal. They should seriously just re-write the rule this off season and say any attacking player who makes contact with the goalie in anyway whether pushed in or not shall be determined to have committed goaltender interference and the goal shall be disallowed. At least then there will be clarity on these types of plays because it can’t be left to judgement of an increasingly incompetent and inexperienced NHL officiating staff who made an incredible amount of errors in last night’s game. Putrid officiating.

That being said, Rangers can’t no show in the second and stop hitting and forechecking. I have no idea what made them change their play.

Also, good to see Kreider resort back to his glide around the perimeter of the ice refusing to stand in front of the net. Thanks for a great regular season Chris but can you please at least engage with the game?!? Aside from the short handed goal he was totally unnoticeable.

They say that the crowd at MSG is like having an extra player on the ice. Just realizing that playing the Pens, they have four extra players on ice with the refs.
This is interesting, because my take is that the modern crowd at MSG is amongst the worst in the sport. I don’t know if the audio can be trusted, but the place sounded pretty quiet to me lat night.

Hunt in for Reaves

Brodzinski in for Vatrano

Jones in for an injured Lindgren

Braun in for Nemeth are the moves I'd make for Game 2

Kreider-Zib-Laf
Panarin-Copp-Strome
Goodrow-Chytil-Kakko
Hunt-Rooney-Brodzinski

Miller-Fox
Jones-Trouba
Braun-Schneider

The Rangers were getting pinned in deep in their own end lots tonight. A lot of that was due to the horrible 4th line and aggressive pinching by Pittsburgh's defense in the offensive zone. Get a guy like Jones in there to help the transition game and make them adjust when the Rangers suddenly double their number of odd man rushes for.

This will be a quick series if Gallant keeps trotting Reaves and Nemeth out there.

This is laughable. After one game in which they got screwed out of a win and hung in there against a far more experienced NHL playoff team you want to totally change the lineup? Stop- there is 0 percent chance Gallant does any of what you suggest. Reaves was a wrecking ball in the first and cost this team 0 in terms of why they lost. Nemeth struggled but Jones would likely not even go a playoff game without being injured and has not played meaningful hockey in over a month.

Leave the coaching to the NHL guys who have a clue. Imagine the message you’d send to your team by making these drastic lineup changes after one game?!? I can tell you it would not be positive.

Yeah, they MSG is very soft on the ref's. Would have been that riot feeling in many arenas if another team get the treatment we did last night.

The people in Toronto made the call to disallow the goal, not the refs doing the game.

It was 50/50, the way I look at it if someone on the Pens ran over Igor, even if a Rangers defenseman pushed them, we’d want them executed on the ice.

It is what it is

Also Reaves was f***ing garbage and shouldn’t see the ice the rest of this series if Gallant has any sense.

Thanks for “setting the tone” of the series Ryan, enjoy the popcorn in the press box the rest of the series

Right I get that but the rule is flawed. The judgement of “could he stop in time” should just be taken out. People might say “well then the D would just shove guys into their goalie.” Nope- anyone who’s played hockey knows you don’t shove a guy towards your goalie for fear the goalie will get hurt. The rule, as written makes NO SENSE!

Their third string AHLer beat our Vezina winner.

Here’s a hard truth: goaltending doesn’t win in the playoffs when you are inferior at 5v5, as we were so much this season and were again in all but the first period yesterday.

Every sport has interpretation calls. What your suggesting isn't possible.

Sometimes I wonder if I ever fell into a coma for years and wake up, if I'd check the Cup winners and find out we've won, if I'd be upset that I missed a Cup run but now that I think about it, it might be better if I just go into a coma and watch the highlights when I come out.

Wrong. The refs look at the play on an iPad and make the call. Not Toronto.

Nope- not on a challenge. Toronto reviews the play and makes the determining factor. The IPad is used so the officials on the ice can rewatch the play

All of the 'yutes got a series worth of playoff experience in a single game. Crazy.

50/50 on that goal call. I try to reverse it and if it were called a goal against us (which it would've been because, you know, Penguins) I think I would've been pissed.

Shot their powder in the first period and paid for it in the second. 75 giveaways. SEVENTY FIVE. They need to tighten up and forget the cutesy plays that don't work in the 2nd season.

It was "conclusive" to the point that the goal was overturned. The refs called a good call initially. Toronto somehow determined otherwise even after a video review , which further showed proof he was pushed. How is it acceptable? NHL still has horrible rules and officiating. It seems like it will never change.

to start that was one of the worst ref'd games ive ever seen. i mean it was egregious the way they swallowed the whistle at blatant pens infractions but gift them a 5 on 3. and the disallowed goal...you knew we were getting screwed, ridiculous kakko gets ridden into crease, attempts to avoid contact, still no goal. so just bump your goalie if you think the other team is about to score i guess

on the ice team came out flying, could never really recapture that momentum though. mika line generated nothing though were matched up w crosby much of the night. still had a ton of chances at rush offense and were awful entering the zone and finding a shot. panarin line was a little better with getting in the zone but struggled to find chances after the first other than copps goal. kid line was great, esp kakko and laf. laf was throwing the body and both were hard on pucks and winning their battles...chytil was awful. hes legit afraid of contact. i dont get how he gets away with just waving his stick at pucks in all 3 zones, hes a big kid and hes been around long enough its time to man up and compete or he shouldnt be on the ice. hes also dogsht at finishing so theres that. he looked to be turning a corner a couple months ago but that was a useless performance. bump goodrow up btw laf and kakko. 4th line was fine, def tired out.

d put in work going down a man for much of a game that long and sheltering the bottom pair. braden definitely had some tough moments in his own end but made so nice defensive plays on rush chances. miller trouba fox were great. if lindgren cant go id prefer to see jones jump in although i dont have much hope it happens. think jones is way better than braun and especially in this series is the better option.

besides the refs the biggest thing that killed us was not finishing in the first. we simply have to beat casey fkn desmith a couple more times with the start we had and looks we were getting. that coulda been 4-0 end of 1 and we cruise. its one thing to run into a hot goalie...but when basically every goalie is a hot goalie when you play them the issue isnt the goalie
