Explain what? You think a 38 year old on a two year deal is going to keep mcilrath in the ahl? Lol

I think McIrath will keep himself in the AHL.

And when/if McIrath actually demonstrates that he can play at the NHL level on a consistent basis, the 38 year old on a two year deal will be one of the last to go to make room for him.

What I fail to see is how the Rangers signing Boyle is an endorsement of McIrath.

If/when?

Come on. How many people have said that he's there or real close already, at his age, despite injury problems in his development?

If the rangers felt mcilrath was far off, they would have kept stralman for 5 years instead of signing Boyle for 2.

Don't compare a young third pairing d man to a young third pairing d man?

Del Zotto at this point is a train wreck. Saying Moore is better than Del Zotto is saying that he's capable of playing without spontaneously combusting on the ice. It's an accomplishment in the barest of senses.

Certain people here were also blaming Moore for a bunch of goals in the playoffs when Moore wasent even on the ice... Moore played quite well in the playoffs. And let's not forget he's still very young.

Mark this post down.

He will be in the nhl as a regular by jan 1 .. He is progressing very well . The knee injury was a full yr set back but the rangers thought enough of him to be a black ace and he skated every single day with the team.. He isn't far off at all

Saying Moore is better than DZ is saying that Moore is a serviceable 3rd pairing d-man, which MDZ is not right now. That's true, and since that's what we need him to be, that's fine.

Can't tell if a guy deserves to stick if that guy never gets a shot. He played what 2 games last year?

This whole thing is reminding me a lot of the Eric Cairns situation. Cairns was a Rangers prospect highly touted as a physical defenseman that nobody wanted to scrap with. He got his chance and lost a couple of scraps against very tough guys and was discounted as having a glass jaw and AHL material. Isles gobbled him up and a few seasons later the best player in the game at the time (Jagr) made a comment that he hated playing against Cairns and that he was the most underrated defenseman in the game. He also started clobbering people. He needed the ice time at the NHL level to develop his game. He became a solid 2nd pairing Dman.

McIlrath just needs to develop, not at the AHL level but at the NHL level. Give him a chance. Makes the team tougher and keeps some younger fresh legs in the game.

Now with Boyle here the only way he will see ice is if someone goes down to injury. At some point that's likely going to happen, but Untill then is probably another year in the AHL for big Dylan. Unless of course the Rangers trade out one of Girardi or Klien. I don't think that is likely to happen.

Great add to the conversation!

So the Rangers feel he's close because they signed a guy to two years instead of a guy for five? Yeah, don't see the correlation.

I don't know that it indicates that he's "close," but it definitely indicates that they have players in mind who they feel are likely to step into the role in 2016-17. It doesn't even necessarily have to be McIlrath they're thinking about.

This training camp is big for him. He'll have to show progression from his cup of coffee from this past season. I believe he will. He will have to show in preseason being ready for the NHL. Unless someone is hurt, he won't break camp. I will find it hard for him to be in the NHL this season, unless he can play the same minutes and effectiveness of Klein. I don't think he can surpass that at this time. Would have to force a trade of a guy like Klein to get his minutes.

If that's the case and we can turn Klein into a prospect or a comparable forward (3rd line type) it can work out.

Agreed. The Rangers didn't want to lock themselves down with another long term contract on D.

I think they see the future as: McD, Girardi, Staal, McIlrath, Allen, Skjei, Moore

Klein will be a trade chip in a year or two.

Great add to the conversation!!!

Just as good as your addition and then subsequent condescending swipe at me.

You've accomplished as much by that as you claim I've added to this conversation, which is nothing.

You don't see the correlation between roster flexibility and impending prospects being ready to take the next step having an impact on signing terms for current free agents?

Unreal.

You think he's going to last that long as a third pairing guy? Or do you actually believe he has top four potential?

Top 4 potential, no doubt, but he will be in this league for a long time just on skating ability alone. Even if he doesn't pan out, a third pairing d-man with wheels like his is a pretty sought after commodity

He really doesn't skate that we'll to be honest. He's not terrible but I wouldn't call his skating an asset.

Basing his career on his skating isn't sound logic.

His potential is for a Brooks orpick type guy and his low end is Eric cairns.

Brooks Orpik? What? That's one of the most baffling comps I've seen for a player.
