Well, McIlrath is already a much better skater than Orpik. He's quite a good skater for his size as is. If he's improving his skating over the summer, I can't wait to see how much better he gets.

If you don't believe that young defensemen get into the league much faster and in greater numbers than they used to, you are not paying attention.

The cap alone has been a major factor along those lines. You are free to disagree, but the facts are on my side.

Your facts are stained with a lack of common sense, though. You don't blanket things like that across all teams when some teams have certain positions they are strong in, thus granting them an ability to develop players more slowly at said positions. We've been strong at D for a few seasons, a lot of the league hasn't had nearly the depth through the top six we've had. The league wide blanket statement essentially ends there.

Nice avatar. Getting the itch to do a Top Goalies project, like I am?

For those suggesting why kids on D get an earlier look... It's because their teams don't have depth.

Washington signed two 2nd pair dmen for over $11M because they lacked competence on the back end. Washington had 2 defensemen capable of defending and now they have 4 that can play against the top 6 of other teams.

They rushed Carrick because their defense sucked. same holds true for the majority of teams that didn't make the playoffs. That's why players get overpaid or overplayed on D. It's by virtue of default and not choice.

Yeah, let's McIlrath at least establish himself as an NHL regular - let alone one who proves he'll be a 700+ games NHL regular - before we start comparing him favorably to NHL'ers like Brooks Orpik.

What's wrong with saying McIlrath is a better skater?

Anthony Duclair is a better skater than Brian Boyle, is that just not true because he hasn't played an NHL game?

That line of thinking doesn't make sense.

What are you basing 'better skater' on regarding McIlrath?

So do players in the AHL not skate? I have seen the dude play probably a hundred times including his WHL days.

I can safely say he's a better skater than Orpik. Not sure what your point is.

A MUCH better skater than Orpik? That was your original point.

Awesome - you can edify me then. What are his strengths and weaknesses regarding skating? Would he be an above average skater in the NHL right now?

He moves very well laterally and forward/backward. Probably at least comparable to a Klein. He struggles sometimes in his transitions when skating backwards to having to turn and catch someone. He also struggled a lot with his balance, though that seems to have been mostly resolved towards the end of this past season.

Would he be an above average skater right now? No. Is his skating good enough for the nhl right now, yes.

But i don't think many 6'5 230 pound guys in the nhl are tremendous skaters. And mcilrath is probably at least as good a skater as anyone else that size

He is certainly a better skater than someone like Orpik. Orpik just has the experience and positioning to not look exposed. While mcilrath has the better skating but has lapses of when and where he can pinch or step up, and it gets him in trouble. He's improved that a ton so far in the ahl, but he has to make that same adjustment in the nhl
