Friedman: Dylan Larkin requests trade, Part II

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
We always hear a lot of chatter right before a big player (we know is going to be traded) is moved, and it’s usually about the team who ends up striking out, as leaks start happening to try getting just a little more from another team. Like Quinn to Detroit.

Dallas seems to be all the noise right now. Everything from Robo being involved, which will prompt a Debrincat trade, to Dallas having to finish up a contract or trading Robo…. then the Larkin deal will be finalized, to it being a 3 team deal with a Chicago or New Jersey.

I just can’t see Yzerman paying a winger $14-$15 million. $12 might even see him losing hair, and he’s definitely NOT gonna pay Debrincat on top of another winger like Robo. Not when he knows as much as anyone, you win in the NHL “up the middle.” Tying up $33-$35 million on 3 wingers, makes it hard to pay legit Cs. Especially when you have Seider and Edvinsson to pay.

So whether Dallas is that bridesmaid we always hear about right before a trade, or they’re about to get the Larkin trade done, more and more people in the sport, think there’s a good chance a Larkin trade gets done within days, if not today… and Dallas seems to be the leader at this point. Everything seems to hinge on what happens with Robo.
Which legit centers do you speak of?

we have a lot of big f***ing problems to solve that even Robertson doesn’t fix if something miraculous doesn’t happen with the prospects and I’m not sanguine about those chances.
I agree, but I don't really know the path were taking until we see some of the assets targeted or another move sending Cat or someone away.

If Detroit doesn't get a top6 center coming back in Larkin trade their 1C next season will be Andrew Copp. The worst 1C in the NHL.
Worse than LA with Byfield, Worse than Boston with Geekie/Zacha. Detroit doesn't have anyone who can become a 1C among their young forwards.
Kasper looks like a 4C. Danielson probably a 4C. Ethan Bear can become a 2C as he's only 6'0 and seems more suited as a 2C in the NHL.

With Robertson Detroit will be absolutely stacked on the Wings but so very very weak down the middle.

except bear is a W so your opinion is already shaky

I think the relationship between the Illitches and Detroit and what the city has been through gives it a different flavor. The son is not the father there but before we left Detroit our family had done business with the Illitches, met Mr. I a few times, played/coached hockey in their youth programs. It’s not like this is a big ownership conglomerate with little connection to the city. Not to valorize a rich guy but it is what it is, they’re all very comfortable in their positions. Yzerman has been living with or near the Illitches since he was like 17, the owner sees him like a brother. I am not aware of another ownership team or front office that has that very loyal, tight knit relationship.
The Illitches were philanthropic visionaries and started the Adopt a GM program

are you familiar with any of the young players you just listed? Carter Bear is a W. Kasper played most of the season with a significant knee injury plus it’s his sophomore year. Danielson needs to watch videos of players who got that dawg in em. Finnie needs to work on his hands. They’re almost all certainly going to be more than fourth liners, 1C though almost certainly not.

They are involved because that is where Larkin wants to land. Worst kept secret in hockey. Yzerman can play hardball if he wants but that won't be easy when the regular season approaches and the Wings are looking at another season of being irrelevant.

Cool, but Larkin will have a chance to be on that team when they offer anything other than the likes of Yurov, Stramel, or Wallstedt. The only valuable chip they had got dealt to Vancouver in the Hughes trade. Beyond that there's nothing.

It's gonna have to be a third wheel that is in need for a goalie and really values Wallstedt to give a significant value out of it, because Yurov/Stramel mean little to nothing.

Funny how Wings fans want the moon for a Danielson but Yurov and Stramel are worth little or nothing.

Also Wallstedt >>>> Buium.

And that makes Detroits future at Center even worse. Kasper looks like a bust. Danielson probably won't be anything more than a 3C.
So is Danielson a 3C or 4C?

I don't think anyone wants anything for Danielson. He's a bit of a mystery box still. He has all the tools to be a very good center but between being injured most of the year and a kind of deferential (?) attitude to his play up here, it's hard to tell what's going on. I'm chalking it up to playing injured before being sent down. He certainly has the skill.

Well I don't think that Danielson is worth the moon. But the reality is the Red Wings have too many young players or prospects in the same boat as Yurov/Stramel, so we don't need more. Same goes for Wallstedt, we have a lot of goalies in our system and there's no need for another.

It's clear that these are the assets the Wild have to offer, but at the same time it's clear that Yzerman is not interested in these kind of players, if there was any interest a trade would have been done by now.

Who the f*** wants the moon for Danielson? He’s a throw in at best for a real player and could only be a real piece for a guy like Pettersson who has warts and contract issues

If Bill Guerin wants Larkin then he needs to get off his ass and start trading roster players of value to acquire real assets to flip to Detroit.

Dude is sitting on his ass.

Tough to pay a winger that much, but if youre in a otugh situation with Larkin, you could do worse than a 6'3, 26 year old that can give you 100 points and 45 goals. Detroit hasnt had a 100 point guy in 30 years
And they won't with Robertson either. With options of Copp, Kasper, Danielson, and Rasmussen at center, he doesn't crack 80 points in Detroit.

I'm fine with people evaluating Robertson as the most talented player in 2026 that Detroit has any chance at getting. But it feels like people are taking crazy pills for how that player would fit with this roster.

Gimme a long team plan at center over a short term sexy winger any day.
