Friedman: Dylan Larkin requests trade, Part II

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.

I will let this summer play out. But if actions confirm this path, I'll be completely done as a fan, at least until there's a regime change and clear evidence that Cup contention is reinstated as a long term goal.

Life is too short to spend time on a team like that. They can chase a ring or kick rocks.
Yeah, it's ironic. I feel like they don't understand that being stuck in this kind of purgatory is actually worse for fans than being abject shit for five or six years and accumulating high-end talent and then developing it. I also think they haven't fully reckoned with the death of free agency and the fact that you just cannot build a team that way anymore

Since Yzerman has had about as much success with the Red Wings as Fitzgerald did with the Devils, do you think that at some point the Red Wings just fire him and try to mend the relationship with Larkin?

I wish they would get rid of them both but unfortunately the Ilitch family loves Yzerman no matter what. It f***ing sucks.

OK, thanks for the info. I hate to see the Red Wings lose a guy like Larkin so I was thinking that might be an option for them.
Np friend. I mean it’s still the hometown team. I’m ambivalent about it. On one hand we didn’t really set ourselves up for success. In the other, I think the team list is chicken shit and all of Larkin’s talk about wanting to be in Detroit sounds real rich right now. Ready to move on from all of them tbh, Yzerman, Larkin, McLellan.

Most threads involving Detroit eventually devolve into the following points repeated ad nauseam:
- Yzerman doesn't leak so theres little to go off of (though in this case theres an argument the 3 team disclosure was an Illitch/HSJ special)
- He's stingy and stubborn and patient and cautious to a fault, so folks will say he HAS to do something even though he's never operated that way
- Fans from other teams cant separate what we (Detroit fans) think is likely to happen given GMSY's proclivities not being synonymous with what we would want to happen
- Because the team is in a rough spot all Detroit assets take a hit even though a lot of our guys wouldn't be buns on better constructed teams
Every team has their own version of this.

We always hear a lot of chatter right before a big player (we know is going to be traded) is moved, and it’s usually about the team who ends up striking out, as leaks start happening to try getting just a little more from another team. Like Quinn to Detroit.

Dallas seems to be all the noise right now. Everything from Robo being involved, which will prompt a Debrincat trade, to Dallas having to finish up a contract or trading Robo…. then the Larkin deal will be finalized, to it being a 3 team deal with a Chicago or New Jersey.

I just can’t see Yzerman paying a winger $14-$15 million. $12 might even see him losing hair, and he’s definitely NOT gonna pay Debrincat on top of another winger like Robo. Not when he knows as much as anyone, you win in the NHL “up the middle.” Tying up $33-$35 million on 3 wingers, makes it hard to pay legit Cs. Especially when you have Seider and Edvinsson to pay.

So whether Dallas is that bridesmaid we always hear about right before a trade, or they’re about to get the Larkin trade done, more and more people in the sport, think there’s a good chance a Larkin trade gets done within days, if not today… and Dallas seems to be the leader at this point. Everything seems to hinge on what happens with Robo.
This is interesting. Dallas definitely has the balance of help now and future assets to get a trade done, even if Robertson isnt involved.

The problem is its tough to find a center. Its why Larkins price will be so high as well. You gotta really hope Kasper or Finnie really take off if you dont get a center back for Larkin.

Tough to pay a winger that much, but if youre in a otugh situation with Larkin, you could do worse than a 6'3, 26 year old that can give you 100 points and 45 goals. Detroit hasnt had a 100 point guy in 30 years

I think the relationship between the Illitches and Detroit and what the city has been through gives it a different flavor. The son is not the father there but before we left Detroit our family had done business with the Illitches, met Mr. I a few times, played/coached hockey in their youth programs. It’s not like this is a big ownership conglomerate with little connection to the city. Not to valorize a rich guy but it is what it is, they’re all very comfortable in their positions. Yzerman has been living with or near the Illitches since he was like 17, the owner sees him like a brother. I am not aware of another ownership team or front office that has that very loyal, tight knit relationship.

f*** it. Minnesota relies on their wingers for their offense. A group of Robo, Raymond, Debrincat and Kane is up there for best top 6 wingers in the league.
You’re assuming Kane stays and Cat isn’t sold off, which is very much in the cards. A retool/rebuild feels all but certain at this point.

I mean does yzerman really know what wins in the NHL, because he’s done a f***ing pathetic job so far

And probably should be. Target 3 years from now when Seider is 28, Edvinsson is 26, Raymond is 27 and you've seen your goalies in the NHL; also Florida and Tampa should be on their downslopes by then.

Your post makes no sense. If he was being offered what others are getting for a destination Larkin would be willing to go to, you bet your ass he would be gone.
Yeah. Problem is the teams who want Larkin, especially the ones he would sign off on, don't have the assets the Wings are gonna need. Ball is pretty much in Larkin's court to expand his list again, or make it a 3 team trade.

I've always thought this could end in a blockbuster, with Detroit actually upgrading on Larkin if them and another team can pool futures together. (Robertson?) Not a lot of pure sellers right now though. If some team decides to sell off entirely, they could take advantage of a pretty nutty market.

Idk if the swap is Larkin for Robo, I'd imagine the FO working more toward keeping a competitive roster.

we have a lot of big f***ing problems to solve that even Robertson doesn’t fix if something miraculous doesn’t happen with the prospects and I’m not sanguine about those chances.
