Friedman: Dylan Larkin requests trade, Part II

  • Congrats to our latest Sportsbook winners - GOLD MEDAL kihei, SILVER MEDAL fish7 and BRONZE MEDAL Sammy Kat - new tournament begins today 6/15
Outside of Nikishin (which may be required for Larkin), I’d love to see the Canes throw a smattering of their futures at Detroit for Larkin.

Personally though, seems to me the stars have aligned for him to go to the Panthers for a package centered around 9OA

@Pavels Dog

I think free agency trending the way it is makes teams even more likely to hold onto their core young pieces and prospects with all their might than they have been in the past. Especially with hit rates on higher draft picks getting better and better as modern scouting evolves.

I also think that assets of draft picks of guys picked in the 7-15 range hurt teams a lot more to give up than is being made out in this thread.

I just don't think 30 year old larkin falls into some caliber of player we haven't seen traded before to justify breaking the wall open.

I think the problem is that trading him sort of signals the Yzerplan has failed. Steve obviously doesn't want to move him. They're trying to win now.
Nah, Yzerman's just slow. But he definitely holds a grudge, especially if it's a character thing. Look at the guys he moved out in TB for simple attitude reasons.

MSL demanded a trade to 1 team and Yzerman waited until he got his price. With Larkin, he's probably trying to force him to open up his trading list. He has a lot more time to work with here.

You think that he wants to move him? TBH, Larkin leaving might actually be good for Detroit long term. But I feel like short term they obviously don't want to make that move.

Yzerman is definitely known for being stubborn in these scenario's and Larkin has no actual leverage since he is stuck for 5 years

Larkin will be booed to oblivion if he plays and can't sit or he doesn't get paid. His trade list will open up then lol

100% he's going to move him. I don't know that the entire team would even accept him back as captain. Yzerman might bluff for a while, for leverage, but Larkin's gone.

Fans love to imagine these type of scenarios but in reality it would create such a dark cloud over the team/locker room that no GM is gonna allow it to happen.

He will be traded, not sure if that’s this year or next. Just because recently so many GMs have been giving in doesn’t mean Yzerman will.

Maybe if the plan is to tank for a year. There's no way Yzerman wants him in the locker room.

Exactly. If they start the season with Larkin on the Wings it will be another fail for Yzerman. And they'd likely get off to a slow start and might end up tanking the whole season because of it. Yzerman needs to swallow his pride and make the best deal available this summer.

And yet this has been Yzerman's standard MO for his GM career. I think the dark cloud you're imagining is the made up scenario.

I don't think it's true that Yzerman held onto St. Louis for a while after his trade request. It became official that St. Louis demanded a trade on February 26th, 2014. He was traded to the Rangers on March 5th, 2014, so exactly a week later. I don't think Yzerman has shown he's the type to let this run into next year and let it be a potential distraction, I think Larkin is definitely gone in the off-season.

That doesn't mean he's going to take a terrible offer for Larkin just to move him, but the package Yzerman will get back for Larkin will absolutely be less than Wings fans here are expecting. Using Utah as an example, I think it will be something along the lines of Hayton, Beaudoin, Lamoureaux and a 1st. More or less the equivalent of 4 late 1sts. Or using Minnesota, make it Yurov, Strammel and 2 1sts.

But if you force the trade and get a awful haul you are gonna have a tank season as well. Either way the Wings are boned this coming season.

Yes, but only if Yzerman is getting very poor offers which seems unlikely. What's better- starting the season with Larkin and a cloud hanging over the team with constant booing or trading Larkin for an underwhelming package of Strammel, Yurov, and a 1st and getting on with things? And for the record, I think they can get a better deal for Larkin but that is probably the floor.

I can't see Larkin playing during this, he will sit.

I think he's wanted to move him a while. But from the outside looking in it's always inconceivable because this league has conditioned it's fans to all think one way about different situations.

Gonna be funny if more people the USA team start forcing their way out the next few years.
