Confirmed with Link: Ducks re-sign Trevor Zegras (3 years, $5.75M AAV)

I stay off the site for a day and this happens.

Excellent deal for both sides. Now he can prove he’s worth $9m+ and the Ducks aren’t tied to him if this doesn’t pan out. Which I doubt will happen.

I’m going away now so we can sign Drysdale.

John
Its a good deal for us...

If zegras can become more of a marner/datysuk type (reliable defensively while still being creative offensively)... i dont think PV will have any issues paying zegras next contract.

Glad this got done. It seems fair to both sides, especially if the term parameters were defined early on. At this point in his career Zegras still has areas where he needs to improve, he isn't the best player on the Ducks (I think Terry is) and he isn't at Jack Hughes level either. Let him prove himself over the next three years and if he gets a huge payday, then he will deserve it.

I like the competition this creates. in 3 years Carlsson will be out of contract as well so they will be competing for that 1C spot. McTavish needs a new contract in 2 years so he will also be competing to lock down his spot.

We end up paying the best performing rather than overpaying someone who may lose the position

Glad that's resolved, better late than never.

Z wanted to avoid the early morning practice and game day on the same day situations.

Verbeek's comments were very interesting and reinforced one of my suspicions.

By all accounts, Zegras is a good teammate and hard worker. Lots of instances of him staying on the ice after practice has ended to keep working. The question is - what is working on? Verbeek's comments suggest he's working on things he likes doing (shooting, puck handling, etc.) and not as much on the areas where he needs improvement. The good news is with a bit of direction, the work ethic will pay off.

He needs to work on the defensive side of the game. His defensive awareness is what Pat wants to see improve. Once he does that. He becomes a 10 mil a year player

Zegras is great. He's saying and doing all the little things to make me truly believe that dude's committed to this team and for winning. I love to have Zegras on our team (I'm not his burner account btw :D Which, ofc, is exactly what he would say...)

Literally, no exaggeration, everyone who plays with him or coaches him likes and respects him. PV called him mature and said he was "all in." Cronin said much the same although he went into a sort of parable about everyone's relationship with their new girlfriend is great until they get into their first argument, and then you see what you really have. Which is fine, the point is that Z always does what he's asked and he does it with a good attitude.

I haven’t heard it yet, is it that bad? Lol
He had to ask what was being asked twice and was noticeably flustered and frustrated. It wasn't that complicated of a question either. Something like "can you speak to the level of difficulty regarding getting this deal done?" He eventually gave a non-answer, which is to be expected, but still sounded annoyed/pissed off while doing it.

Not bad, just super awkward.

I actually did think the phrasing of that question was weird. I think PV was just confused as to what was being asked. The odd assortment of words assembled by the reporter barely came out in the form of a question.

Even if the phrasing was weird, his tone and demeanor in his response didn't do him any favors.

Not that any of this matters in the grand scheme of things. Again, I just find it amusing that he does this every time he speaks to the media.

He's not good at public speaking. I'm not good at fixing cars. Everyone has things they're not good at. He's uncomfortable and awkward. Good thing dealing with the media has nothing to do with winning hockey games.

The question was worded pretty oddly. To me it sounds like " why was this negotiation so hard" I'm sure PV doesn't look at it being hard so much as taking time or the "process" as he likes to say. Probably sick of people asking why it took so long. He seems to get defensive imo when people appear to question his abilities.

Yeah that's my sense too. He's a bit insecure. Hopefully spending more time in the spotlight will mellow that part of him.

Drsysdale might be seen by our Gm as the perfect player to swap a young top 6 forward for later on once His own draft picks are ready and playing with the big club. I don’t see him wanting zell drysdale and fowler all in the same lineup

Agreed. Ill also add that when you hear a lot of ex players and personnel talk about these situations, none of them really sounded worried about the process. Its largely the fans and press making a bigger issue of it.

It was frankly a little disappointing listening to the Crash the Pond podcast yesterday. Their take on the Zegras situation was that Zegras’ camp was asking for 5.75 since the 3 year term was agreed upon, and that Verbeek dragged out the process by trying to bring him down to 3-4 mil before eventually caving.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but there seems to be no evidence for this. They spent most of the podcast criticizing Pat Verbeek for something that may not have even happened.

In my opinion, it’s more likely that Zegras’ camp asked for 7-7.5. Pat countered at 4. And two sides met in the middle. That’s how most negotiations work in my experience.

No surprise. They’re pretty anti-GMPV so far and think Zegras will get to Hughes level type of good.
