it’s funny reading replies on certain threads because it’s so easy to tell who never actually played hockey before…

So anyways, there are certain players that are natural leaders and teammates listen to and respect in the locker room.. just cause they aren’t the best player on the team doesn’t mean they can’t be the captain… in this case Gudas is the guy in Anaheim…. And I guarantee if u ask the other players, they would 100% agree with the choice naming Gudas the captain

Reading online that he hasn't been suspended as much as in previous years, is he cleaner or does he just know how to toe the line now?

I'm really puzzled by these decisions.

Like, maybe the respective organizations feel they have chosen the best man for the job, and maybe they are right.

But I feel like in these cases the best man is no man, and they should just go with all A's until a legit candidate emerges.

Derek MacKenzie with the Panthers is a recent example. Seems unnecessary when there's a good chance you could replace him within a year.

Bedard will more than likely be Blackhawks captain within a handful of seasons but Foligno was defacto captain already and is meant to be a stopgap of sorts. Gives the media someone to talk to instead of putting pressure on Bedsy and the younger guys.

we've been without a captain for 2 seasons. the potential future captains (Mctavish, Carlsson) are 21 and 19. let them learn from someone they and the organization thinks is captain material and he can pass it on once they are ready; which will probably be in 2 years when his contract is done.

You do know he was previously a captain right?

Classy enough to eat up all that salary and get the team nowhere in 7 years. The ducks will do more under Gudas than the entire Tavares saga with the Laughs, not that it's a high bar.
The ducks arent even the most promising rebuilding team in california

By the time ducks become good, gudas will be off the team and a young player will from the core will emerge as captain. Gudas is a doormat captain, just a placeholder

Absolute no brainier, slam dunk decision from ANA. We haven't had a captain since Getzlaf and the kids aren't ready. Fowler/Terry aren't the lead from the trenches type. In 2-3 years one of the kids will step up and take the mantle.

The Gudas lead ducks are going to eliminate the Lightning in a playoff series, twice?
The leafs have nothing to do with the ducks ongoing rebuild so not sure why the comparison to tavares and leafs was made by numerous posters here

The ducks can and should be better than 2017-2024 leafs playoff wise if their rebuild works out, as leafs core and rebuild has failed massively unfortunately to date.

However, Radko Gudas wont be captain and most likely not even part of their team when/if that happens. In 2 years time a new captain shoudl emerge from their younger guys and Gudas will be out.

I believe Andrew Ference was captain for the oilers for a short while pre Mcdavid post Horfcoff. This is ference 2.0, similar level and style player too

I love his appointment. I have never liked this trend of just naming your supposed franchise player your captain, particularly at a relatively young age. Leaders can and will lead in different ways, whether it’s by pure (quiet) example or vocally, and just like with certain aspects of skill, you just might not be a great leader just because you’re a team‘s best player. Radko is a perfect fit for this. Quality teammate, quality person, stands up guys and I am confident he knows when to talk and when not to.

I see a lot of strong reactions to Gudas that I don't share.

I don't think Gudas is an awful choice. He's a good guy, and probably should end up with an A on his jersey. But it says a lot about the Ducks and their current lack of leadership that they have to promote a guy who only joined the org a year ago and who isn't exactly renown for his legendary leadership.

In other words, the problem is not necessarily choosing Gudas but rather the lack of other, more legit options. It's not like the Ducks are an expansion team. They have a lot of players who have spent many years there, some who have only played for this franchise.
Pretty sure we made Neidermeyer the captain shortly after his arrival. Nor is someone like Fowler or Terry going to be the better option as a leader.
