GDT: Ducks at Canes - Eric Staal Jersey Retirement Night.

The last really positive thing he did for the org was the 2009 run over 15 years ago.

He's a big what if for me. What if he didn't end up on a team where he won the cup immediately, a team that was just happy their transcendent stat willingly signed a second contract with no drama and didn't push him, leading to a country club atmosphere? He basically admitted when he went to the Rags and sucked eggs was a wakeup call he had to start taking conditioning seriously. Weird legacy, the new team has attracted a ton of new fans and old fans like me have moved on
I'm not gonna litigate the Staal era tonight. We'll remember the good years he had here and applaud him tonight, even if I don't think his legacy is quite what they've been trying to sell it as.

Genuinely curious, how many times in the past month+ have we NOT given up the first goal? Generally fairly early too

I don't think his jersey deserved to hang next to the likes of Francis and RBA. He fell off hard and fast. Unlike his brother. He was simply lazy af post 2009.

Our 2C is on the ice right now. He sure looks like he could still play.
35 year old Eric Staal has more offense in his pinky thank Kotkaniemi has in his entire body.

38 year old Staal is on par.

40 year old Staal could probably still give him a run for his money.

In a professional tryout for who is better it's probably 45 / 55.

I actually like these duck jerseys and totally get why the canes would wear red tonight with the festivities and stuff since staal never wore the current black, but the orange and red look a lot more similar in action than I would have thought

Edit I didn’t see AD had addressed this already my bad

Teams seem to be picking out soft spots in the Canes D-zone set up
The goal visualizer on NHL.com is so cool, it makes it easy to see what happened: Jaaska vacated his zone and followed (what he thought was) his man into the slot, Ducks get it to the guy in the vacated zone, which draws Slavin and Drury, and the guy gets it to the goalscorer in the high slot, which I think was Drury's zone, to pick a corner.

The replay just looks bad. Drury is looking directly at Harkins skating towards him in the high slot, and doesn't hinder him in any way. And then he doesn't get his stick in the passing lane to stop it.

Comrade, it just goes to show the brightest flames burn the fastest.

I will put my body on the line and have a Bojangles supremes meal with honey mustard, as the good lord intended, to honor E.Staalo and lock in the win.
