Can The Habs even afford to take PLD on?

Caufield will need a serious raise and all those young guys will be coming off of their ELC. If PLD is thinking 9+ I doubt its in Montreal.....

The Habs have a lot of salary coming off the cap this offseason in Drouin, Dadanov, Monahan and Byron. In another year, Edmundson and Hoffman are up, too.

I don't think the habs will even want dubois. Suzuki's the number 1 center and that won't change. Dach could be number 2 but even if he stays on the wings, we have mesar and beck who could be ready by then.

This is a good point. Players can't automatically assume there will be a spot for them somewhere down the line with any specific team.

Dubois can play wing too, so can Dach. I still think he would be a good guy for the Habs to go after. You’d have to think the package would be a first round pick, roster player and a prospect or two depending on what prospect it is. Montreal has the assets to get the deal done.

As far as I know, you can only sign a new contract for the following season/seasons.

Why would the Habs trade for Dubois if they can't sign him long term? How would they know he is willing to sign for 8x8 instead of wanting 12x8? It would be crippling to give away serious assets only to find out he wants a kings ransom.

Wait until he hits FA. Then it's up to him to be reasonable.

Having the assets to get the deal done is only part of the situation, a team (Habs or otherwise) has to have the right pieces to fit the Jets needs and be willing to trade them.

can't see the habs having the assets to make this move. it would set them back a lot.

Quite the opposite. The habs are one of the teams with the most assets (prospects/picks).

I don't believe the habs will want to give up these prospects in a trade:
Farrell, Mesar, Hutson, Mailloux, Barron, Beck, Roy, Dobes, habs 1st

But these should be available:
Florida 1st, Flames 1st, 2nd round picks, Kidney, Ylonen, Heineman, Rohrer, Kapanen, Tuch, Mysak, Harvey-Pinard, etc.

Some of these assets + Dvorak should be enough to get Dubois.

The habs could also potentially sell Monahan and Edmundson at the tdl for 1st round picks.

only a few of those guys carry a lot of value.

can't see monahan fetching a 1st. i wont say edmundson wont fetch one after chiarot but i think the habs would have to retain 50% for this season and next to even have a chance.

Not close . It would cost a prospect or 2 off the do not touch list and a 1 st likely . Dvorak would just be salary going as he doesn’t actually hold any value on his own

1. The Dubois wanting to go to MTL rumours were pure speculation by Montreal media. They claimed he was at the draft because he was expecting to get traded, and then Dubois had to clarify that he's attended past drafts, lives 15 minutes away from the Bell Centre and was invited to attend the draft by his bank. Montreal media also misinterpreted his agent's comments. It was asked whether PLD would want to play in the Montreal market, and the agent responded saying it may be a market he'd want to play in. It might be true that he wants to go to MTL but don't let Montreal media fool you into thinking that he's dying to go.

2. PLD wanting to go to MTL does not mean that MTL can lowball WPG. Some of these offers come across as charity. We'll give you a little something for your player that certainly wants to come here. An offer has to be made that Chevy can't refuse, and one has yet to be made in this thread. It is more valuable to hold onto PLD for 1.5 years than it is to lose him for nothing in free agency, considering how well the Jets are playing.

3. Even if he does hit free agency, I wouldn't be so sure he would sign in MTL if there are a bunch of suitors for him. If I grew up wanting to play in MTL but another team offered me $1m more every year of my contract to play for them, I would strongly consider it.
1. PLD has publicly stated he wants to be a Hab

Above is all that matters. Habs have no need to trade for PLD. The only question is how much of a discount PLD will take to play for his dream team.

While I'm sure PLD would like to play for his hometown team, IMO he could very well crack under the pressure of an 70-80 million dollar contract playing for the Habs. Couple bad games and the media/fans won't be very kind to him.
Nope

Have you heard any booos latelly, the last few years? Like Drouin who's either injured or absent?
