Yeah, but, once our young guns are finished with their ELCs, our window to win it all may already be closing.
Lmao. Our window is most definitely not closed just because the trio isn't on their ELCs. Did Chicago end up in the dumpster after they didn't have ELC Kane & Toews? How about Pittsburgh after no ELC Crosby & Malkin? Or Tampa with no ELC Stamkos & Kucherov? Do you get the point or should I go on?

I get your point! No need to go on. What will happen with our Leafs, will happen, good, or not! We'll see how it all plays out in 3 to 5 years.

My point was to try and win it all in the short term by getting a true #1 D NOW.

Didn't Chicago win with Kane and/or Toews still on ELCs?

The Athletic has an interesting analysis on Andersson in Calgary’s farm system. The idea is that:

Andersson is about Dermott level RD, same age.
He might not make NHL over stone
Calgary needs RW and has surplus of RD
Suggests something around Kapanen could get it done

I think it’s degrees of media acceptance.

Lou walked in with a track record. It takes some time to tear that down. Same with Babcock. 3 seasons.

JFJ? A little easier to take shots out of the gate. Less acceptance

I think one of the smartest things Shanahan did was hire Babcock and Lou. Not because I believe Coaching makes any particular difference. In fact, I argue it’s largely a minor factor and take my shots because of that.

But what it did do was buy credibility. Which means buy time to make long term moves.

Unfortunately, getting rentals and MLSE wanting the pain message softened has risen expectations and shortened whatever little patience there was.

Dubas is now squarely in that expectation spotlight with no track record and no time to learn on the job.

It will be tough. Hope he succeeds
What was he doing the previous three years in Toronto if not learning, gaining experience and succeeding?
Yzerman had no track record to speak of either...good thing for the Bolts they didn't have your concerns.

I think Dubas will make a big/significant move in the off-season, trade or UFA signing. Becoming the Leafs GM for such a young guy is like you have made it to the top of your profession fast, you buy a Lamborghini or whatever you can afford, you take it out to some quiet two lane strip of road and put the pedal to the metal. Maybe he's more mature/conservative than that but many new GMs do like to put their stamp on a team.

I have been on board with all of Shanny's decision but this one. I think the better man for the job would have been Hunter. I just don't see how hockey op's remains the same there now, I don't see how Hunter is content to just running the draft and talent analysis.

Did the athletic take the Petry idea from you too? ;)
Haha, they must have scrolled back to last off-season in that case. I've been a fan pretty much since he got out of Edmonton. He's the kind of player I'd want as partner for Rielly. Reliable, but good enough in all areas of the game to not have to rely on Rielly. Boston pretty much cut off Rielly completely, so Hainsey had to make the outlet passes. It was a problem. With Petry, that would come back to bite them instead.

On paper it's fair trade value that fits both team needs very well while trading from an area of strength.

Would be great if we could do that type of move, obviously with the piece we bring in hopefully working out well.

Where the heck did this notion come from? I hear all the analysts spreading it too?

How can the window already be closing? The window hasn't even been fully framed yet.

Last time I checked ELC stood for "ENTRY level contract" and not "win now oy you're #$%@'ed." Maybe if the Leafs were in cap trouble or had a self-imposed lower cap limit. But they have plenty of cap space, nice cap bump this year and future flexibility - they have tons of room for growth.

Who said i have concerns?

I said he will have challenges and outlined what I believe those to be.

He may be able to overcome them or might not. I didn’t offer a guess one way or another.

Seems like a reasonable trade idea, though Calgary would be doing it from a position of surplus, whereas Toronto would be doing it from a position of strength. If Andersson is NHL ready, there's a logjam with 4 capable RD and only 3 spots. We'd have to have a ready replacement for Kapanen, even if it's only for the fourth line with Nylander/Marner/Brown at RW. Not necessarily a deal-breaker, just a consideration.

Ops wouldn’t be the same if Hunter were promoted either. He wouldn’t be able to do talent analysis and GM duties.

4th line RW is a solvable problem. If we’re getting another Dermott on RD I think overall both clubs get better. A good old fashioned hockey trade, right @MR4 ?

Everyone is forgetting that we are gaining 2 mill in cap just from the gleason/cowen contracts coming off the books. Basically a free number 5 dman or 4c, pretty good!

I would rather trade Brown instead of Kap.
