Two others wanted Prov the flyers D man. Hunter was the only one who wanted Marner if you remember we had a trade arranged that Hunter talked them out of.

Dismissing the Marner pick is funny as all around that pick were land mines. Hunter put his reputation on the line with that pick and the kid is a super star and a franchise player.

Well at least they wanted Provorov and not hanafin that is also a good sign. Provorov and Werenski are a lot better than hanafin. In saying that I preferred marner and am stoked we have marner. It is nice to know though they were prepared to take Provorov instead of hanafin

I’m not gonna say anything now, but when September comes and Hunter is still here, I’m bumping this thread
Would be nice but I think he's leaving. Not because I think there's an apparent rift between them but I think another team would want to put him in a higher position than he is on the Leafs.

I'd specifically target Nashville scouts. Whoever's been responsible for that factory of defensive stars should be brought into the Leafs organization ASAP.
You can't hire guys for comparable positions. So, to poach anyone from Nashville you would have to offer a promotion of some sort.

Dubas is a lot like our hockey team. Talented, respected, young and ready to move forward. Hopefully he takes this team where it needs to go. The Leafs can't blame next season on inexperience. Our players should understand how the league works. Exactly like our new GM. Hopefully they figure it out together. This is the off season where I thought the Leafs would really improve. I thought those improvements would come from off season moves and the maturity of the team as a whole. Hopefully Dubas learned from Lou. My expectations are high. Rookie GM or a jedi master like Lou. I want to win win at least one playoff round next season. That is on Dubas. Good luck Kyle.....

Higher than director of scouting and assistant gm? So basically a team will make him a gm? Possible although I will say 2 teams interviewed Dubas and 0 hunter as far as I know. And if a team makes him gm they take away his best asset getting out there and scouting in the rinks

That's true. I think we're going to see a lot of internal moves from the Marlies and people Dubas has brought in who are doing well.
Super interested in how he uses the massive cap space this off season.

You could hope $$$ would donit though. If you wanted Nashville’s amateur directo of scouting you could keep that title and double his money. Not everyone is willing to move just for more money but it’s possible

That's true. Maybe he stays then, I think the whole rift thing is overblown just like how people think Babcock will be able to control Dubas' weak mind.

Not if babcock refuses to pay that player. If he doesn’t like holl he will just be in the press box

Oh it’s possible he could just leave for a sideways move with a clearer path to gm or even just to go back to London. It doesn’t make him more likely to stay just he’d have to be promoted to gm to have any higher role than he has now

and tbh i think he mainly got the job because Shanny wants to pull the strings behind the scenes and believes he'll be easier to control than other candidates

Exactly!!

When Lou Lam was here Shanny let him run his own show and make the rules and didn't tell him what to do, as he respected Lou based on his past resume and achievements. Likely viewed him more as an equal, whereas Dubas would now will be more a subordinate and do Shanny's bidding.

Marner was the overwhelming favorite pick along with Hanifin. It was the right choice, but it wasn't something that a whole lot of people wouldn't do. I'd have a hard time pegging a former top ranked pick who fell in his lap as a great pick either. Dermott is though, most definitely. Still, that's not a huge list of great picks over three years for a guy who is supposed to be a scouting prodigy. Plenty of teams out there that has done more with less.

As for your last claim, I don't generally buy unsubstantiated claims but I will say this. Having listened to Dubas talk about players a few times, I don't think I could ever see him push for a guy "because his possession numbers were through the roof." That sounds like the kind of claim made by someone who want to erroneously paint him as just a stat cruncher.
Sorry but it is true. Maybe it will come out maybe not but I trust who I heard it from.

I hope Dubas does fantastic as I am a life long Leaf fan and trust Shanny I was just hoping for someone with more of a track record. Remember I was not in favour of either.

Dubas will get my support until he does something to lose it. Go Dubas!

Holl should definitely get a look. It's not like the D doesn't need a lot of work

People disrespecting Hunter, you bear no relationship to the praise he receives from his peers. Some really clueless people here, good talent isn't easily replaceable.

This. I don't understand why the Hunter bashing is going on right now. He's still in the organization. Just because Dubas was selected as the GM doesn't mean Hunter 'sucks'. Hunter is still our head scout.

You can't hire someone in the NHL from another team that is under contract for a lateral move. It is against NHL by-laws. You would have to wait for that person's contract to lapse. Which, NHL personnel doesn't tend to do, because they like the security of never entering the open market. Its why a team can't hire Babcock to be their head coach or why a team couldn't hire DJ Smith to be an assistant.

Its why when Hunter was rebuilding our scouting staff that he hired primarily from the junior ranks, and brought in Ari Vuori from Detroit by giving him a promotion. You can't just poach other teams scouts by paying more, unless they are out of contract. Which doesn't happen, because scouts generally aren't paid enough that they would give up having a 3 year contract extension even if they potentially make more by hitting the open market.
