The thing about team toughness being an issue is that I don't believe that Gorton and JD didn't already understand that this was an area in which the Rangers were deficient. These men had to have known the team could use more sandpaper--Gorton drafted Lucic and Marchand and signed Chara when he was in Boston. People have talked about it on this board, about how the Rangers would look to bring in more grit during the offseason. I'm sure they would have addressed it this summer. Does firing them and promoting Drury speed up the process?

I don't think so.

Just reading the tea leaves, people (Not just Dolan, but Sather as well - this became pretty clear after the conference call today) were disgusted with their performances against the Islanders and the old guard's lack of "alarm" towards those games and the overall "big picture" attitude. The Washington situation likely only expedited the process.
This is a complete whitewash. A terribly conceived excuse to justify such a rash and impetuous action. That's all it is. And it doesn't even make the slightest sense. This season didn't hang on two games. Even if we won both Isle games, we still had an uphill climb that did not favor us at all. It's total bull. And since when does management put their foot down in such a rebuilding situation. What, were we favored to win the Cup this year? Oh, no wonder the GM and Pres got canned. It's totally absurd. By all accounts, this season was a successful step forward. Had there been wildcards this year, we would have still have been in the running for a playoff spot. With COVID and all that curtails, there were no exceptions made? Being how difficult it was to navigate an NHL team through it? It's nothing but a crock coming from a long time Dolan puppet in Slats,... who after his disastrous run as GM, is still around to shine his shoes.

This whitewash to deceive the loyal Rangers fan base,.. is even more egregious than the firings themselves.

Exactly. It’s crazy to me how many people don’t see this. Where was any actual contributor going to fit? There a fourth line spot or two open and that’s it. Now that the kid forwards have proven themselves a bit, some vets will be moved and grit guys who can actually play can be brought in to meaningful roles. We already had Kravstov on the fourth line and Kakko on the third - people want to add more grit players. Where?

Just two days ago, I wished everyone here a happy and safe summer, as I left you guys to your off season banter. And then this happens. Just when I'm about to leave,.. they pull me back in.

Midas touch? At what, lottery balls?

I'm not saying they were bad but jesus, you'd think Gorts was the God-Emperor of Mankind around here.

Exactly, what are these miracles that Gorton performed? Sit back and pick #2 and #1 OA ?

Sign Smith? Resign ADA, then demonize him? Get screwed on the McDonaugh trade?
Overpay for Trouba? Shattenkirk debacle?

oh wait.. he got Zibenajad for Brassard...

JD... Columbus?

Nobody asked Sather about what happened here. Jeff Gorton was his guy. Sather promoted Gorton to AGM in 2011. Gorton was groomed as his replacement. Gorton became GM in 2015. JD is Sather's guy too. They are very close friends. I am sure Sather had a role in JD getting the job in New York. Dolan fired both of them two years after Sather stepped away from the organization. What happened here?

Just look at Dolan's history for a clear understanding of what happened here. He is a spoiled brat who acted impetuously because he is an insecure, weak minded individual. And is desperately trying to cover his tracks sending out his puppets to clean up his mess.

This has already been asked and answered.

But to recap,.. Yes Zibad for Brassard
Or signing Panarin long term.
Or getting Fox
Or trading Spooner for Strome
Trading up for K'Andre Miller
Not to mention all the other youngsters who didn't go 1st or 2nd in the draft.

Were would this team be without all these moves? It's not like Laff and Kakko have put this team on their shoulders.

Take away 2 lottery wins and they have Zegras and Lundell instead. Our rebuild has been a success regardless of the lottery wins

The letter came out three years ago. Dolan fired both of Sather's guys.

Gorton gambled on an unproven college coach and lost his job. JD got on in the way of the Dolan explosion and is collateral damage.

The optics are terrible with timing and Dolan being Dolan. If you step back though, it's not dissimilar to Flyers, they just handled Hextall firing in a more subdued, corporate pr manner. Hextall was a team legend, but it didn't help him when he was slow-walking a rebuild and he stood by an inexperienced coach who wasn't getting sufficient results.

Fans wonder why so many coaches are retreads. When things go south with a newbie, a GM is usually putting his own job on the line. Most owners are averse to developing coaches at NHL level.

I need to get it off my chest and ask the question.

Is this going to ruin y'all weekends??

For me, no.

Life goes on, shock wears off. At some point you feel how you feel but you see where it goes.

I like Drury, though I don't agree with the timing. I'll wait and see if he's got the legit goods or he's just another wunderkind that people project their hopes onto as the next great GM. I'll see if Dolan can legit help himself, or if we're gonna start having conversations about "Why aren't we going after that guy, or this guy, or this guy."

At the end of the day, I tend to feel like the timing of this, and the way it's done probably has more to lose than gain, but the deed is also done at this point.

I'm less worried about abandoning the rebuild, so much as getting caught with "accelerating" this with moves we feel we "have to" make. Whether that's Eichel, whether that's the right coach at the right time, etc.

To me, everything has a season and time. This didn't feel like the right time. It felt like chaos for the sake of chaos. And, based on track record, that's not unheard of from Dolan. So there's a trust gap there.

Dolan told Brooks something poignant. He wanted Drury inserted to do the exit interviews. And he wanted to make the move while the team was at MSG instead of in Boston. I think Drury will get some good Intel at these exit interviews and I think Quinn's fate will ride on them.

I think DQ is done. And on-ice performance aside, that's probably for the best anyway.

Because I have enough questions about DQ without him really focused on coaching for his employment survival.

Is Dolan the only person who thought this team underachieved this season? Youngest team in the league, no cap space, in a division of death with 4 of the 9 highest odds teams to win the cup. I still don't get it.
