Montreal / K.Hughes can only retain salary for 3 players he's already retaining on Dadonov retaining on Drouin should only be done if he knows he can't make other trades that he might need to retain salary.
The return for Drouin even retaining 50 % wouldn't be much maybe a 3rd rd pick 2023.

he has no value, a contender would much rather have Hoffman with retention over Drouin, hell they even took Dadonov before him

personally i would retain on Edmundson to make him look more appealing/move him out

I don't see an impact to stick handling or passing, but his shot is gone.

Perception is 9/10 of the law. Perception is he's worse than Dadonov. I don't think that anyone that's objectively watched the team this year can claim that. But, perception gets in the way. He's far more likely to engage physically. He's a better passer. It's unfair to call him a pp specialist, because Montreal doesn't have a great power play. If Montreal had more finishers, he'd have another 6 assists in the last month without breaking a sweat.

Throw perception out the window - having watching both players all year - Drouin SHOULD have more value. But ...

Drouin's a turnover machine though.

I wonder if his wrist injuries have exacerbated that problem of his.

He doesn't turn it over anymore than Hoff or Dad. To my eye, he's far better managing the puck than he was early on with Montreal where his zone entries were terrible.

I'm not an apologist. It hasn't worked out. But I don't hate the guy like so many do. In the right situation, I think he can rebound to something approaching a 50 point player - especially if he can get back to scoring some. A short term deal, that's at least partially incentive-based, somewhere outside a pressure cooker environment.

What happened to Drouin anyway?
15-16 playoffs - looked like a star in the making. 5-9-14 in 17 games at the age of 20.
Follows that up with 21-32-53 in 73 games at 21 years old.
Has two more years kind of close to that level - and then just falls off the face of the earth.
Barely NHL caliber.

Being a contender and having Drouin in your lineup are mutually exclusive concepts.
He can't play any meaningful role on a contending team. He is at best a backup in case of multiple injuries, but a playoff team doesn't have 2,75M of cap space for that, and either way it is futile to plan for that because, like I said, being a contender and having Drouin in your lineup are mutually exclusive concepts.
There are reasons why MTL is one of the worst team in the last 2 seasons and Drouin being in their top9 and 1st PP is one of them. Also, let me remind you that Drouin didn't play a single game in the playoff when MTL reached the final. MTL got better when Drouin got out of the lineup. Drouin net impact on an NHL club is negative.
A purely offensive forward that is softer than microwaved butter and can't even score a goal, despite plenty of ice time including PP time; I don't see any playoff team targeting him to fill a need.
Also, he is injury prone and may bail out on his team because of anxiety.

Doesn't play an NHL style game. Also, injuries (his wrist are f***ed) and lost confidence in his game over time. Also, mentally weak.
