They would be mad not to take it. Dumb proposal.

Dumb? The cost for retaining that much alone is worth a 4th. The difference between a 3rd and a 4th is not that much, worth the risk of Drouin being a marginal upgrade over Namestnikov. Now, the conversion on if Drouin is the right player is a whole other story, but this is under the pretext that there's nobody else left on the market we can afford.

He's an NHL calibre player who can fill in at center and can play both sides in any top 6. He can contribute in the right circumstances. He was never much of a scorer but the hockey sense is still there. He can be a threat especially on the PP so it makes him useful come playoff time. It looks like Hughes prefers projects over mid or late round picks and a defenseman or goalie who needs a fresh start might do the trick.
Wow what a sell job :laugh::laugh: You'd make a great agent

So what if a player has 5 years remaining in his deal and is traded with retention. Does the retaining team only retain for 3 years?
I phrased my answer poorly. I should have said that teams have 3 retention slots and a slot remains in use until the contract associated with it.

For example, a team is currently using none of it retention slots. Over the next few days, they retain on 3 contracts: one that expires this year, one that expires after next season, and one that has 5 more seasons after this one.

Slot 1: In use. Available again July 1, 2023.
Slot 2: In use. Becomes available again on July 1, 2024.
Slot 3: In use. Becomes available again on July 1, 2028.

Drouin is still to score his first goal this season. He is not an upgrade over Namestnikov.

You know...
Best case is somehow you get a similar deal like the Dadonov swap where teams swap struggling players who may benefit from a change of scenery, but MTL will also likely need to have more cap coming in then out. With Hughes somehow finding a deal for Dadonov I won’t write him off from finding something for Drouin.

Watching Drouin in Montreal, my sense is his wrist injuries have affected his stick handling and he's not the same player.

But for sure it's worth a try in a market where the media and the fans aren't constantly hounding you. He had to take time off because he couldn't sleep due to the stress.
I don't see an impact to stick handling or passing, but his shot is gone.

Perception is 9/10 of the law. Perception is he's worse than Dadonov. I don't think that anyone that's objectively watched the team this year can claim that. But, perception gets in the way. He's far more likely to engage physically. He's a better passer. It's unfair to call him a pp specialist, because Montreal doesn't have a great power play. If Montreal had more finishers, he'd have another 6 assists in the last month without breaking a sweat.

Throw perception out the window - having watching both players all year - Drouin SHOULD have more value. But ...

This. Nobody has any illusions of Drouin magically fulfilling his draft day potential. But maybe we could get him back to 40 points or so, which would be well worth it from our end. And if it doesn't work, well, it's not like Namestnikov was working out either. Not really a loss.

He has played some of his best hockey as a Hab in the last few weeks, never thought I'd say it but if they could resign him at $1MM I'd consider it rather than give him away for nothing especially if we could use that retention slot for a better return.

Having said that I probably take a 5th and run if someone offered it.
