Player Discussion Drake Batherson (RW) - Part II

For all the faults of management, credit where credit is due for getting Drake locked up under $5M/year for 6 years… absolute steal of a deal for us.

This is clearly Dorion’s best move since he’s the GM. He’s will be a point per game+ player for 6 years at 4.95M. What a deal and a steal.

I actually feel bad for him and hope he is not the type to let this type of stuff affect him.

And by stuff I mean him at some point feeling like he is too good for the contract he signed and it starts weighing on him and affecting his on ice play....hopefully not.

Five million bucks a year is still a lot of money for anyone, and honestly, making an extra million or two per year is not really life changing when you are already making a few million.

I think he will be fine. He said before the contract was ever signed he wanted a long-term deal and I’m sure he also knew he’d be an excellent player. His preference was for long-term security and he will still likely get another good contract as it expires when he’s 29.

He will get a decent contract, but definitely not the same contract he would sign if he was only say, 26 or 27 and still ripping it up. Team's are starting to be a little more cautious signing players into their 30's because very few continue to play the game at a high level.

He took the security over a bridge. If he keeps up he'll still get another big deal before the end of his career but he will definitely have left money on the table.

Even for a millionaire missing out on $5-10 million has to hurt. That is a lot of money. It's why I never begrudge players who go hard like Brady did. This money is to set your family up for life.

The flip side is Drake also looked at Colin White and figured it could be in his benefit to play it safe, sign a long term deal and then whatever happens happens. I am sure Batherson was confident in his abilities as a player, but he knew that if he signed a 2 or 3 year deal that it was not going to be anywhere near 5-6 million and probably only around 3 million.

I will take some chump change if you do not mind. Thank you in advance.

 I'm comfortable but damn I wish I had that kind of money. Keep in mind that Batherson will pay close to 50% in taxes!

That being said my comment was more to note how ridiculous prices are these days, I'm still shocked that I had to pay 55$ the last time I went to the barbershop. Had to buy a new clipper at Costco

You guys are absolutely nuts. I pay 25 and that's with $5 bucks tip. 30 including beard.

40 bucks is insanity, much less 55.

Well, if he keeps up this level of play and becomes a genuine star with a bit of Team Canada play thrown in, he can make up a few million in endorsements. And I'll wager there will be some good jobs within the game for him after his playing days are over. Those late bloomer kids who end up becoming stars and who also have good hockey IQ and vision also have a knack of becoming very good assets in the coaching and scouting areas of the sport down the road. And he seems like a genuine good kid, along with being pretty smart and hard-working....he won't have to worry about finding job offers.

RWs over PPG

Stone
Rantanen
Batherson
Nylander

Batherson is top 15 in pts/gp in the league right now.

Yeah, I remember Troy Mann saying he’s a huge hockey nerd and watches a ton so I think you’re right about that. Future Sens GM when Melnyk fires Dorion in 15 years!

Well, I live in the Montreal suburbs, 4.5 kms away from the bridge that brings you downtown. People must think it's THE shit here or something . My house took a lot of value though so can't complain too much because I'll make even more profit than I initially thought.

A shawarma plate is close to 20$ now

Of players with more than 4 games...7th

If he stays healthy he'll be top 10 in points in the League this year, IMO more likely than not.
