How do you guys feel about taking Sean Day in the 3rd round? Offensive potential seems decent. Left handed of course but big size and still developing. Has lots of potential

From what I've read, I don't think he has the work ethic required to make it in the NHL. Pass.

The truth is that David Quenneville is leaps and bounds a better defender than Sean Day right now. The difference is A) size B) skating C) potential

A) size - I don't think size is the be all end all that some do, but the truth is, with the size/skill combo of the offensive players in the game, I find it difficult to fathom Quenneville being able to defend the Ovechkin's/Thornton's/Kopitar's of the world. And this isn't a slight size advantage. Day is half a foot taller and 40 lbs heavier than Quenneville.

B) skating - Day is one of the best skaters in the draft, and that isn't the good skater for his size comment, he is just a magnificent skater. It's not that Quenneville is a bad skater, but he isn't like Day, despite his stature.

C) potential - If Day puts the pieces together, with his size/skating combo, he will become a top notch, top pairing defender. At Quenneville's size, a Torrey Krug type defender is likely the top end.

I bring up this comparison because it is a great example of projecting players to the next level. Quenneville is a much better junior hockey player at this point in his career. That said, both of these players are likely 5 years away from stepping on an NHL ice surface. There will be a pile of GM's thinking that their player development system can get the top end out of Day, which makes me think he is a great gamble with a third round pick.

So, uh, Chychrun seems to have gotten some really bad reviews for his play at the U18's. Anyone here that's been watching and could expand on that? I'm not really sure what to think of the player at this point.

He's been a turnover machine. Too many high risk plays, skating ability is there. His D partner on the right Fabbro has been much better.

Chychrun is getting the same treatment as Crouse last year. They didn't put up the offensive numbers that were expected, they get hated on throughout the season, and picked apart for every little thing they do. Then a flashy new toy like Sergachev comes along and does put up the offensive numbers despite other shortcomings, but the onlookers only see the good, and don't pick them apart for the not so good, and voila...

Fact of the matter is that Chychrun is a rock solid defender. He is 18 years old and makes mistakes just like every other 18 year old. He has the work ethic, character, skating ability, shot and physicality to be a high end NHL defenseman. Watch any #1 NHL defenseman, especially the Doughty's and Subban's of the world. They make many mistakes throughout the game, usually from trying to be overly aggressive offensively, and forcing plays. The thing is, that their effort and skating level is so high that they can make up for their mistakes. That's what Chychrun has too.

Just my 2 cents, but Chychrun remains number 3 on my board, and is unquestionably the best defender in this draft in my opinion.

What about Gauthier? in the event that we add or trade down for a teen pick.

Rw with a good shot and one timer. Big and supposedly plays heavy in the o-zone.

I understand what you are saying but comparing to Crouse is inaccurate imo. Crouse was poor offensively but propped up by size and a strong defensive game. Chychrun is a highly touted prospect that seems to be stagnating. Not quite the same.

Chychrun is starting remind me of Ryan Murray. Not a terrible pick, but there are Lindholms, Rielly's, Trouba's and Ghosts that will be drafted after him.

If we pick 4th or 5th, and are planning on using the pick on a dman, I'm fine with trading down. Either get more trade assets or start stocking the bare cupboards even more.

Im starting to think Dubios is slam dunk pick at 4th (or 5th if he makes it)

Another forward I know. But dude is a legit PWF and good two way player. Plus he can play any wing, center, pk, PP. Hed be TMs Pavelski

Dub is 4th on my list as well, excellent player and he can play all 3 forward positions

He had a very strong first half into the WJC but since then his game has fallen off and he wasn't impactful in his team's first round playoff defeat in which they were upset in 6 games.

The same Semin that had seasons of 73, 79 and 84 points with the Capitals? If a 3rd round pick can be the D equivalent of that for 3 seasons for us that is a no brainer pick.

Will Sean Day also come with Backstrom and Ovechkin?

The 3rd round is to early to take a player without work ethic.

Even if Day is lazy, he seems like a guy worth gambling on if we're talking 3rd round+.

6'3'' 230lbs and skates like Coffey. You don't see that very often.

If you want a risk/reward pick, he's probably one of the best in quite a while.

Laziness can be cured. The Oilers have extra 3rds. I'd be willing to take a chance on him. His skillset is extreme top end.

Even if he works his butt off to get an NHL contract, I don't think it'll be worth the pick.

Yeah this is starting to worry me too.

Thinking we should trade the pick more of a sure thing player or take Dubois who can replace Eberle/RNH and is more of a Chiarelli type player.

I don't think Sean Day will be TERRIBLE, but I don't see anything outside of a big third pairing D-man.
