Indeed.

Plus, a physical 6'3" 220 lbs winger than can skate and has a beauty of a shot, a guy described as "a more dynamic and versatile James Neal" is exactly the guy you want beside Connor come playoff time.

I think RNH is a very good player, i just think he is redundant and we make our team better by trading from the position of strength and filling our holes. It is much easier to find a good 3C than a Dman who has comparable value and contract to RNH.

Funny, this is just so typical of HF oil. We lose, every one is fed up ready to kill and destroy every one. Draft time comes and oh.... look I love the potential of this 18 year old. Great, hurry to buy my season tickets.

It's not like RNH has not been given a fair shake here. Ample amounts of 1st line time and 1st unit PP.

We have to ask where he fits here long term, at $6 mill we probably have to get rid of him anyway once McDavid's extension kicks in in 2 years.

Is it worth passing on Dubois for two more years of RNH? IMO no.

Exactly. We trade RNH now or in 2 years. Either way he's not part of the team long term. He has good value now. In 2 years, he has Eberle's value. Maybe less

Lol, we are done with a 22 year old. Clearly he has no big potential ect, but we want Dubios badly.

Disagree with everything. We need Nuge next year, we want to win. We are not planning to win in 2020, we are planning to win next year. Unless there is a great deal on the table Nuge should be an oiler next year. The oilers will be a far better team with Nuge in the line up than Dubious everything else held equal.

Agreed. I don't understand people who think we should deal a solid NHL player because we are drafting someone. This isn't the NFL where a lot of rookies have big impacts.

Do you see us extending RNH after his 6M/yr contract? If I have to choose between RNH or Hall getting an 8M/yr extension, it's Hall. We have to keep in mind that McDavid will eventually make 10M/yr+ sometime down the road. Drai is probably getting 6M in 2 years. That's a lot of cap space for 3 players. This is where an elite center prospect like Dubois on ELC will help immensely.

See right there in bold is where you are lost. In bold is the whole point, how do you know he is an elite center? He is not an elite Center, he is a prospect!!! that means we have no idea what we are getting and when. We know what we have with Nuge, he is a very good and almost developed NHL Center. We need NHL players that are sure things. What if Dubious is a complete bust? What then? Waste years of McDavid?

you need to put NHL players on this roster, yes d men more than anything, so you see what deals are there. If a team will part with a NHL ready D man you trade Dubious in a heart beat. In terms of cap you cross that bridge when you get to it.

Also Nuge is signed for 4 more years, not 2

ps. the whole argument of cap space is meaningless. So you suggest trade Nuge now and keep Dubious, then we will be ok for cap. Well why not just max the cap next year, when we hit the cap in 2 years then trade Nuge. Why now??? you just want another 18 year old. He has unlimited potential in your eyes while you have come to believe Nuge is just worthless. neither are true.

The Oilers aren't in any cap trouble anytime soon, so I would hope that decisions made going into next season aren't based too heavily on salary other than planning long term. I hope, for example, Nuge isn't trade just to clear salary like some are suggesting.

If we are taking on a lot of salary, then yes we need to be moving salary out. But I don't think Dubois should be a top-6 center next season just because he's on an ELC...

Agree completely unless we have a 3rd line center that can replace Nuge that is good enough to play in our top 6 if there are injuries then you do not trade him. We have had such a terrible team for so long people are mistaking nhl quality depth for abundance and the need to trade. If you draft Dubois and in 2 years he over takes Nuge then you trade him. Making decisions of "we will trade x and drafted player x will fill that role" is how we have sucked for 10 years.

I can't see RNH being on the team longterm. It's either he gets traded now for a good dman or get traded for less in 2 years or he walks as UFA in 4 years.

RNH is more of a sure thing than Dubois. I can't disagree with you on that. But I rather have Dubois and trade RNH for a good dman and use RNH's salary on a veteran forward. Not saying your way is wrong. Just my preference on how I would approach the offseason

Wow, I just came back from the Main Boards from a thread called "Matthews/Marner = Toews/Kane" and I don't know if all the guys I talked to are trolls or just VERY informed fans. They are praising Marner like he IS Patrick Kane and I just tell them about the whole Rob Schremp story we went through and how he ripped it up in the OHL and he was gonna be this star player. All they could tell me was:

"Oh Marner makes everyone better around him, unlike Schremp. He had help."

"Schremp didn't make the NHL because of Schremp. Marner is different."

And all they could come up with was "He has a 2.0 PPG in the OHL and he almost broke the OHL record for most points". All I told them was points don't mean the player will translate to the NHL like a star. There is other factors too. But they are too delusional to see what I am trying to tell them. Oh well. They are setting themselves up for a HUGE disappointment if they don't get 70+ points from Marner and 90-100 points from Matthews :shakehead

Why trade Rnh. Have both. I'm pretty tired of the short sighted thinking around here. Everyone thinks our forwards suck when in reality if they had even average defensemen behind them you would see a vast improvement.

Saying we have to trade Nuge because we have mcdavid and draisaitl is a joke. I recall Pittsburgh having staal malkin and crosby when they had their cup runs. No one was saying they need to get rid of a center. The only reason they did was cap issues which I'm sure will come to us but why make a premature move just because eventually we will have to.

add in ELC bonuses and we would be pretty close to cap next season.
Oilers look pretty safe but Chia cant afford to go whale hunting.

Staal plays a very different game more suitable for 3rd line...

With Drai and McD under the fold swapping RNH straight up for Staal would make us a better team.

You just cant go with Drai, McD, RNH down the middle. Only way they stay on the team is if Drai moves to RW.

Except RNH is not Jordan Staal who can move up and down the line up. DuBois would be more of a Staal.

If we trade Ebs, I see no point in keeping RNH. He doesn't seem to play well with anyone else or be able carry his own line. He's also a top 6 player or bust. He's weak against the boards so the wing is not a good option either.

Nikitin is off the books - $4.5M
Ference might do us a favour and retire - $3.25M
Fayne should be gone - $3.625M
Jultz retention will be gone - ~$2M
And we currently have $3.4M in cap space.

We could be looking at around $15M in cap room. Chia should absolutely go whale hunting.

Now factor in Drai and McDavid's extension, a #3C, a back up goalie and 2 top 4 D's. That might be a playoffs team. Okay, now factor in the cap space we need to build a championship contender.

Keep in mind, Maroon and Davidson will also need extensions in 2 years.

exactly, funny people don't see the cycle. Fill hole with a 18 year old. Trade all NHL players cause they aren't a super star like we imagine the 18 year old would be. Repeat suck.

We need Nuge next year, again unless a great deal is on the table, you keep him. When we run into cap trouble if Nuge is expendable then you trade him. When we run into cap trouble, not now.

Again, facepalm. If Dubious even makes the NHL, if he turns out. You are just assuming he will be a great player when we don't know what he will be. It will take 3-4 years to find out, We know what we have with Nuge now.

Wrong. This board can undervalue Rnh all they want but a center trio of Rnh draisaitl and McDavid is a group you can run with. And to be honest I would rather keep all 3 and move one to the wing if you have to cut salary as when a center goes down you can fill the slot easily. I would put money down that if this year we trade Rnh for a defenseman and didn't or trade for another center we won't make the playoffs.

If it boiled down to it and we had signed Demers and the only other option to improve the defense was to trade Rnh I wouldnt do it (with the caveat being obviously I would trade him for the defensemen we all agree won't be traded). As far as I am concerned if Chiarelli can't get 2 nhl defensemen without trading Rnh he shouldn't have the job.

Patrick Stefan was a can't miss number 1 pick. Until he became a miss.

Yaks was the next Pavel Bure... untill....

Too funny, every wants Nuge out cause they see a super star in Dubious. First Nuge is 22, he isn't 35. Second he is a very good NHL center, he hasn't lived up to his potential just yet, but you have to be very happy with him. There is no reason to be so down on Nuge and think Dubious could just take his place and be a big upgrade.
