Brindley the only 1 of those 4 who is a better skater though. Cristall for his size and his skating does not look good for future projections. Gauthier is another who I like but his skating is also questionable. Cowan can skate and has a good shot and has all the tools to be better than all these guys. Only issue I have with the pick is like most say is we could've dropped down, but the player seems like a late 1st round talent regardless.

I am just pointing out that it wasn't really an analytics pick, unless they are honing in on one very specific thing and ignoring a lot of others.

Also, Gauthier's skating is on par or better than Cowan's. So is his shot. And then the puck skill/playmaking he is certainly better than Cowan. I really don't think Cowan has anything that is superior to Gauthier.

He does seem like a classic example of a player that would have been available with a trade down. Nobody liked him close to this much. Maybe he's the next Kucherov. Nothing to do now but wait and see.
Absolutely but it seemed that no teams were trading down last night. Maybe Tre tried to trade down but had no dance partners

You know the goal is not to select the best player right now but select the best player in 3-4 year...

Scout dont watch actual stats, they watch indivial ability and try to project wich player will develop the best.

Yes hes below average in term of size but i giving you an exemple... choosing between a konecny smaller but working pretty hard or a Boeser bigger but playing soft, whos really choosing Boeser?

The goal is not get the bigger player but the guy scout thinking will grow up the most and become the best player.

Just the fact he was sitting up in the rafters showed even he didn't expect to be drafted early.

I am pretty sure he doesn't pick his seat

Why did he show up at all?

If there is even a 1% chance I might get drafted in the 1st, I'd want to be there, it is a once in a lifetime experience.

Also, would probably be enjoyable to be there in general. Fans show up and watch, now imagine if it is your friends.

All the guys people wanted at that pick were small.

Gulyayev is like 5’10. Heidt, 5’10, Cristall 5’9.

LOL no we wouldn’t. People here on HF think they are way smarter than they actually are. The reality is none of us know Jack shit. All these teams have databases full of data and information that we can’t even fathom. Not just hockey related data on players. HF Boards would lose a good majority of the time.
Ok. My pick would have been Gulyayev. We will see. For the record I don’t mind the pick. Fans are just mad because we love a dropper not a reach. Kid seems like a gamer.

I don't know enough about these prospects to have an opinion worth so much as a penny, but it's always a little concerning when you see what most draft lifts project as a bit of a reach. Even to a layperson, the suggestion is that there are better options available with a rough element of consensus. I'm not sure you need to go hunting for some hidden gem when you're selecting in the first around.

Obviously they like the player, but it sort of feels like they went in thinking they could maybe trade back, acquire another pick, and select him in the second round. That trade didn't materialize, so they decided to just take "their guy."

Whatever, these are kids and there's a lot of room for growth. I don't like to bet against anyone that young and I hope the young man seizes on the confidence this organization has shown in him.

That is really concerning. Just like having Minten in the first round.
It tells me that Clark has some blinders on when it comes to scouting. He loves the high IQ players which is fine but Sandin was a high IQ player who didn’t work because he’s not a great athlete or defender.

Hockey IQ should be a factor but not the whole story.

Grebyonkin-Minten-Cowan future 3rd line?

Probably 2 of those guys never really make the NHL. Hard to project unless they completely dominate at the CHL level at a young age, or until they've moved to the AHL where it's a bit easier to project (a lot of guys also look great in the CHL and then hit a wall at the AHL level, so just by successfully making that jump they lose a lot of question marks. Finn, Dzierkals, Walker, etc as a few examples).

Minten and Cowan can both skate, especially Cowan. To me, they are the opposite of a Sandin.

I think Clarke downplays raw skill/talent and focuses on other aspects like IQ, speed, and competitiveness. Good qualities but it’s a fair statement that he might overlook raw potential which could mean missing out on a home run pick

The Leafs must have been buzzing around him for weeks, so he figured maybe there was a chance.

However, he may have been there just to soak up the atmosphere.
That's what I would assume, was the pick really that much of a reach then?

I wonder if a little more fireworks happen today.

Poile said yesterday was the quietest draft night he's seen since first attending in 1967, but that he thinks today will be pretty active.

Will that include us? Who knows.

It's not just that bias, but the bias towards guys who are 5'11 or shorter. It's not like taller guys can't have good hockey IQ or competitiveness, yet we very rarely draft them.

I assume they think smaller guys are an overlooked draft inefficiency, but so far they've really struggled to prove that point. Not to mention that are a ton of examples of big bodied later round gems (heck, Knies might be one - good thing we finally threw a pick at a guy who was allowed to get on a roller coaster).
