He’s 170 pounds lol. Why not say he has a high motor and drive just like Hirvonen or Kerfoot, you know actually realistic comparables not a guy who’s got 5 inches and 40 pounds on him.

Damn you guys are really desperate to make the “new management” look good on mediocre decisions today.
I don’t give a flying fck about giving management credit.

I just like that we are diversifying the prospect pool. I’m sure if they could have traded down they would have.

I have a feeling the leafs wanted to take a high floor player with so few picks. You hope to get at least one player that makes it from each draft. The leafs have so few picks this year.

A bit disappointing they didn't trade down or buy for something now. Its a buyer's market right now on players. Think they could have taken Cowan later too but who knows.

Cowen has a long way to go before even being close to the NHL.

he’s like Brindley. Upside is a Trevor Moore type player when you had guys with first line upside on the board. Embarrassing.

Not taking BPA.
Thats the thing, he is a small finesse winger which doesn't fill any kind of a need. They think they got the BPA. I wish he was a Brindley.

He had a slower end to the season IIRC.. But i believe that was post deadline after the team loaded up with some trades and pushed him down on the depth chart?
Did he not also come back from an injury late in the year? Could have been some thing ailing him as well

Hold on you think taking a 170 pound “smart and competitive” forward is diversifying the prospect group? That’s the exact thing Wes has been targeting every year since he got here lmao.

Not to mention we’re apparently keeping our core RWs so this kids ceiling is 3rd line RW for the next 8 years.

He’s a left shot btw. Can play Center and probably the left as well. Go watch him, we don’t really have a similar prospect to him.

It feels weird going up and selecting where you pick like most other teams.

I miss trading down for 7 x4th rounds picks and selecting Dermott and Dzierkals instead of Konecny.

A lot of the high end skilled guys were not picked in the first round. Clearly teams are thinking maybe their offensive games won’t translate. A lot of people earlier were also picked higher than projected which affected things.

Personally I think we wanted Ritchie and Cowan was next up on the list

& a lot of teams make this mistake year after year, unfortunately it's been the Leafs back to back again now.

There's not even an offensive game to translate here, we just straight out picked up a kid who best case becomes a dime a dozen middle six player.

Just trade the pick if you're going to continue down this boring, miserable route.

Was hoping for Bonk or once he was taken Cristall had a feeling we were taken Cristall. Firat thing i said and im sure a lot people did in here was "WHOO??!!" When Cowan was announced.

Oh well tough to say what we've got right now. Maybe he can be our Aho or Point guy in the draft for a change. Couldnt care less what any of the HF GM's have to say about him in here

If there is some upside there, I will take it.

More annoyed with the projection of where he'd go and we couldn't squeeze another pick out of it.

Although, that needs a trading partner.
Yup. It takes two to tango. Lol

The point is that playoff success in a Junior league doesn't translate to becoming a clutch playoff performer in a league 5 tiers higher, in the best league in the world.
That applies to every single pick, especially when you are picking 28th

How do you know all this. Have you ever seen him play?

Zero trades is definitely noticable and particularly interesting given that a couple different teams seemed to be openly pushing for one

Ideally the Leafs could have done that, but seems out of their control that nothing happened

Which is exactly why I didn't utilize playoff production in a Junior league as evidence to this being an even remotely "ok" pick.

Who would you have picked?

Gulyayev, Heidt, Christal.

Swing, even if you miss you know you took a shot at a player with significant upside.

I'll take that any day over a dime a dozen player who's available annually in July.

It depends on the draft, if a players falls in your lap you take him. Konecny was extremely obvious pick, as he was the 1OA pick in the OHL

If you couldn't trade down, then take a swing at Gulyayev. Or Dragicevic. Or even Halttunen/Hrabal. This is like passing over Luneau to take Minten all over again.

Not really that upset over passing on Heidt or Cristall, but Cowan was like the 5th best Cowan-esque player left on the board. Gauthier, Nadeau, Brindley... All very competitive players with much higher ceilings and similar floors. Cowan is like Hirvonen level or a slightly better version of Nick Moldenhauer. We have a glut of prospects just like him, and we find them all of the time in the mid-late rounds.

We can complain about the lack of picks all we want but all we are doing is shooting ourselves in the foot with these questionable selections. The past two years have not been all that great, and it is not like analytics can support it either. Analytics wouldn't support taking 3rd line upside players like Minten and Cowan in the top 50.
