Could have used Nadeau or Gulyayev. Much more upside.

I love Nadeau but gawd damn. How many more years are we gonna hear people bitch about this team is soft, all perimeter players. Now we finally take a guy who can shoot the puck, gets to the dirty areas and has a high motor and drive just like Knies. I’ll take that.

Simcoe County
Knies, Minten, Cowan

Not the most obvious picks at first, but I think they all add an extra dimension that our team and prospect pool has been lacking. I dont mind having these kind of players in the pipline. It's not like there were any obvious choice at 28. Sounds like Cowan was a late riser and the scouting staff didnt want to risk trading down and missing out.

Or there wasn't a trade to be had .. Trev's job is to work the phones. My guess is there wasn't a deal there that made sense.

Probably just as much as you. But what I do know is there were better players out there and when you have a first round pick, those are the kind of players you draft.

Thanks for your awesome contribution to the conversation though.
I know absolutely 100% nothing about these players. in this draft. other than Bedard

I bet AI could do a better job picking. It'd just compile lists based on other pro scouts lists and also see who is getting talked about in forums etc the most.

Interesting idea. Don't even need AI for it tbh, it's an easy hour long excel project combined with a subscription to any social media listening tool.

Cowen has a long way to go before even being close to the NHL.

he’s like Brindley. Upside is a Trevor Moore type player when you had guys with first line upside on the board. Embarrassing.

Not taking BPA.

By all accounts he's a gamer who can play up and down the lineup. We don't need 12 Marners on the roster. Take a look at the contributions that guys like Hyman and Bunting can make. I get that's not the highest upside, but could still be a very, very useful player if he can develop into an NHLer.

Bunting was also a piece of miserable garbage in the playoffs.

I'm all about guys with motor, I'm just not about passing on high end skill for them in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft.

Cowan isn’t a first line player.

why? because he was drafted at 28th? so I guess Brayden Point, or Bergeron or Kaprizov, or Aho, etc aren't 1st line players?

you can't possibly know what a player is going to be 10 miniutes after he is drafted, unless that player is Matthews, Crosby, Mcdavid, Bedard etc.

Beyond the surefire locks you can't know what a player will be 10 minutes after he was drafted. there are countless examples of guys going later in the first round, or even in the later rounds that went on to become stars.

It's possible and even likely he doesn't reach that level but you can't know that now.

He’s 170 pounds lol. Why not say he has a high motor and drive just like Hirvonen or Kerfoot, you know actually realistic comparables not a guy who’s got 5 inches and 40 pounds on him.

Damn you guys are really desperate to make the “new management” look good on mediocre decisions today.

I don't know enough in all honesty to say much about Cowan but I don't have a choice ... looking forward to seeing how he pans out.

I think the idea from I've seen is he's got a lot of upside that some scouts don't believe in but Leafs are making a big bet that it works out. He's only basically going into his second full OHL season next year. He could surprise.

He won't be anywhere for the next few years with this team anyway. I would of liked to seen another C or D prospect but if that was their bpa then they better hope it works out.

A lot of the high end skilled guys were not picked in the first round. Clearly teams are thinking maybe their offensive games won’t translate. A lot of people earlier were also picked higher than projected which affected things.

Personally I think we wanted Ritchie and Cowan was next up on the list
