We don’t need a goalie though itd be interesting to see what Allaire can do with Knight. I don’t know how I’d feel selecting him honestly

I'm not crazy about using a second high pick on a goalie in two years. The Lindbom debacle looms large here - to me at least. I'm a little split on the idea... I'd be happy to get him with a 3rd first rounder if we have 1 but it sounds like he won't last that long.

I definitely wouldn't say that we don't need a goalie though. I believe that we need one until we have one. We all like Shestyorkin but he's not necessarily a slam dunk. I like Georgiev but would I feel comfortable calling him the future starter at this point? Not really. Maybe Knight looks like Price in 5 years and Shestyorkin looks like Pavelec. Who knows.

Bobo Carpenter's NCAA career is done as BU didn't qualify for the NCAAs.

One has to think he's favored by David Quinn.

Franchise defenseman are unique. I don't care whether they are right or left handed. How many bonafide #1 defensemen are out there and how often are they traded? How many mid range defensemen get stupid contracts?

A #1 defensemen or a #1 center is a very real debate that you could have.

I agree with this.

From what I've heard Carpenter's not the greatest skater. There's 16 college teams still playing and if we're only signing one or two guys might want to see what's there when the dust clears.

From what I understand, GM's usually don't go and scout amateur games in person unless the rest of the staff says "Hey, we may have found our guy."

Hughes is Hughes, but this screams Zegras or Turcotte.

Could also be a “there’s a few guys we really like but would be gone by our second pick, come check them out to see if you’d be cool with maybe trading that far up”

I feel like there are at least a few players from that team getting carried by the others. No way a single team has that many top prospects. Seems risky.

It's actually not all that uncommon. Especially when you have a GM like Gorton who came up through the scouting ranks himself. He's shown historically to have an eye for talent, so it makes sense for him to see these kids. Plus this is arguably the best USNTDP class in a long time, so you get a chance to see a lot of kids all in one shot.

That's not to say your scenario isn't possible as well. For all we know they could have decided that Turcotte and Zegras are 3/4 behind Hughes and Kakko and they want to show Gorton what they're seeing.

The timing of it is just odd to me.

They had meetings with all the amateur scouts earlier this week and he goes there of all places. I know we sent a big contingent to watch the Lethbrige vs. Saskatoon last month, but I don't think he was part of it.

I know Toronto isn't an ocean away from Plymouth (and perhaps thats all there is to it) but it just seemed weird.

Especially with the U18's coming up so soon.

Knight definitely has 1st round talent. The Rangers shouldn't go goalie in the 1st two rounds, but it's hard not to see his potential.

I wonder how people will feel when the 2021 draft comes.... Jesper Wallstedt is already in the SHL as a 16 year old!!

It could've just been a "we have a lot of guys in one spot so lets meet" sort of deal. Hard to get everyone in the same place sometimes when you're following players all around the world. Plus, as mentioned, it's a highly concentrated group of talent on that roster.

the problem with lindbom last year wasn't picking a goalie too early it was reaching for a goalie that isn't that good and wasn't highly rated. i still wouldn't have liked picking a goalie in that spot in hindsight but no doubt would have come around on the idea if he turned out to be good. but picking a bad player is a bad pick regardless of position or round...

as for spencer knight. i think it really comes down to how our conditional picks work out and what our draft picks look like...i mean if we only have 2 first I can't justify taking him unless he falls into the 2nd round. but if draft day rolls around and we've got 5 first round picks then its alot easier to wrap your head around 'wasting' a pick on a goalie

The Rangers could use another one, but not in the 1st round....
Yeah I mean if he falls to our 2nd round pick I wouldn’t be completely opposed to picking him but I’d prefer not to. He’ll be gone by our pick though

Agreed. Some team in need of a potential No. 1 goalie for the future will take him. I'm thinking a team like Chicago or Pittsburgh....
