I do think, though, that Bowen Byram is the best defenseman in this class by a long shot. Anttoni Honka might chase him offesively, but not defensively. I think Byram is the whole package. Definitely top 5, IMO.

I think he's pretty good. Hard worker, very good skater, good in all zones. I think he's skilled, but I question if he has 1C potential. Maybe more of a complimentary top line guy or a very good second liner. Cozens and Dach look like the higher upside centers of the three. All three are close. You could order them in any order, and I don't think you'd be wrong. I'd put them Cozens, Krebs, Dach for now. All within a couple of spots on my draft board though.
Maybe that's what it is- I don't see him as a C moving forward since he's built like a W. That decision from the Hlinka to play Krebs at C over Newhook still confuses me.

I agree. Buyer beware with defensemen taken high lately, though. That being said, I think he's the best defensive prospect, sans Dahlin, since Aaron Ekblad.

I don't think anyone should be beware of Byram's game. He's pretty dominant. Could see him push for the WJC this year!!

I think he's a center. He just isn't going to have the size of Cozens and Dach. He's 5'11, 6'0 with decent weight.

Why beware with defensemen taken high lately? Heiskanen is a beast
Some defensemen taken high have had a tendency to underwhelm for one reason or another. In the cases of Ryan Murray and Aaron Ekblad, injuries had really stunted their development in their draft year and beyond.

Morgan Reilly is just about a finished product, but still has some defensive deficiencies. Also has underwhelmed in terms of what was expected of him so far.

I love Hanifin but think the jury is still out on him. Dahlin looks incredible, but we'll see how his skills will translate to a smaller ice surface.

If the Rangers pick high this year, I would still take a center over Byram, though he has a whole season to change my mind.

Right now, that’s how I have it as well.

There’s Byram, and then a wide gap heading into the season.

We’ll see who is this year’s Bouchard or Dobson to make things interesting, but it’ll take a little while.

Could Kakko seriously drop, maybe to the point of Rangers realistic 8th pick?

Nah ... top 5 for sure.

He could drop out of the top 5, but I also doubt it. I'm just curious to see if he'll be that No.2 pick still. I think Turcotte has a good opportunity to chase Hughes out of No.1 (even though Hughes will most likely be No. 1).

He can, he is a winger and I don't think, at least until this moment, that he is on the same level as a prospect as Svechnikov was last year.

That's a nice set of hands and some serious acceleration in tight quarters. I assume he is projected in the 5-15 range as of now?

Just did a once over of Button's rankings. Do they conform fairly close to the concensus?

Boldy's ranked mostly in the second half of the first round. He's more of a Tkachuk style player than a dynamic scoring winger.

Someone here compiled the consensus recently. Not very close, to answer your question.

Boldy was a kid we talked briefly about a couple of months ago as a guy who could be a riser in the upcoming draft.

The question is how much growth potential there is for him offensively.

Right now the "knocks" on him would be that he might not have the vision or mobility to knock anyone out of the top spots in the draft. However, there is a feeling he could be one of those "ultimate supporting cast" type players.

Craig Button's first list on the 2019 draft. He's got Newhook at No. 28, Turcotte at No. 12 and Broberg at No. 3 :dunno:

It's funny to see where he has Turcotte and Newhook ranked.

Because most everyone I've talked to, and some of the stuff I've seen, has those two neck and neck at this point. The feeling is that neither will come close to knocking Hughes out of the top spot, but there is some intrigue as to whether they might go in the 2-8 range.

Newhook at 28 just reeks of Hlinka bias. It’s still incredible that he was cut from that team.
