Henri Nikkanen scored on his Liiga debut. I'm just saying keep an eye on this kid. No one's talking about him, but a year ago the idiots also told us we must have Kupari ranked higher than Kotkaniemi. I always preferred Kotkaniemi as the top Finn a year ago. I'm not saying this guy will be the top Finn, but I think he's the second best Finn in the draft. The experts love Honka. I'll take Nikkanen.
TOP3 Finnish prospects are at the moment 1 Kakko 2 Honka 3 Nikkanen.
Of course that can change during the season example Patrik Puistola is a guy who can rise in the rankings before draft day.

What do you think of Matias Maccelli? If anyone breaks into that top 3, I think it'll be him.

Really hard to say because i don't follow USHL so much.
Of course Maccelli could get drafted but not first 2 rounds.

Also Wiljami Myllylä is a guy to keep eye on.
And course Kelowna Rockets defender Lassi Thomson is interesting prospect.

Woo!! Myllyla hype-train!!

I also really like Lassi Thomson!!

I have to admit that outside of Hughes, Newhook might be my "personal" favorite heading into the draft.

Obviously the offensive grabs your attention, but it's the overall game that stands out as well. He competes, he has a swagger, he has that certain drive you like to see out there in the sense that he looks like he wants to own every shift.

I see a kid who has all the tools to be a first line center in the NHL, and still has some room to grow --- which could make the combination even more appealing.

I’m surprised more people haven’t been discussing Blake Murray yet. I wouldn’t be shocked if he leapfrogs some of the more notable WHL kids as this season progresses.

Another kid I’m keeping my eye on is Joe Carroll out of SSM. He got shifted to C in the second half of the season and looked a lot better controlling the middle of the ice.

I think Murray is starting to enter more and more conversations. The fact is that there's quite a bit of intriguing talent in the first round of this draft, it's just that a lot of the attention is going toward the names that are starting at the top of the list.

It's not so much what Murray doesn't bring, so much as there are so many centers in this draft who look particularly promising. But I wouldn't sleep on Murray, there are a number of kids he could easily leap frog.

Agreed. I think he's going to turn a lot of head, especially after the cut from Team Canada!!

Not sure on Murray, yet. His shot is amazing, but foot speed is slightly sluggish for me. But that was from seeing him last season. He could've very well worked on that this summer....

I'll keep an eye on Carroll, too. Don't know much about him, ATM.

McKenzie's list actually looks as bad as Button's. Its like these people think the Hlinka is the end all be all tournament for hockey evaluation.

Turcotte at 11 is low

He's gonna shoot up the boards as we head towards the draft.

Lotta US kids from 11-20, which is the Rangers bread and butter

Newhook is low as well. Seems a lot of these guys are looking at Hlinka stats atm

It's interesting to me that early on there seems to be a little bit of a disconnect between the TSN rankings and most of the outside observers. It seems like HF in general gravitated towards guys like Newhook and Turcotte, and TSN has them ranked a bit lower.

Obviously, it's typical to see divergent lists, but there's usually a bit more crossover.

Yeah it's interesting.

Although, as I'm sure you're aware, at this point it's a wash. People's current rankings won't matter in a month, let alone by the time the draft rolls around.

I follow and gravitate towards more US and European based prospects, so I am more high on guys like Turcotte than someone like Krebs for example. There's a hole in my prospect knowledge with so many good Canadian players this year, so I am working to remediate it.

Newhook I have taken a keen interest in with Riley Hughes playing on his wing though

I don't think it's as bad as Button's, but the Hlinka bias is still there. Gotta wonder, though, he compiles his lists from scouts. Do NHL scouts have Hlinka bias, too?

As for the list, Turcotte and Newhook are obviously low and they're overrating defensemen in this class. So far, the only one that can be considered for top 5 is Byram, IMO. Broberg and Robertson are good, but not that good. I think both are capable 1st round talents, but more so mid-later portion of the 1st. Broberg could wind up out of the 1st round. He's got some holes in his game.

Does anyone have McKenzie's list jotted down?

1. C: Jack Hughes (USA)
2. C: Dylan Cozens (CAN)
3. RW: Kaapo Kakko (FIN)
4. RW: Vasili Podkolzin (RUS)
5. C: Kirby Dach (CAN)
6. D: Bowen Byram (CAN)
7. D: Philip Broberg (SWE)
8. RW: Raphael Lavoie (CAN)
9. C: Peyton Krebs (CAN)
10. C: Ryan Suzuki (CAN)
11. D: Matthew Robertson (CAN)
12. C: Alex Turcotte (USA)
13. D: Cam York (USA)
14. C: Alex Newhook (CAN)
15. LW: Matthew Boldy (USA)
16. RW: Arthur Kaliyev (USA)
17. C: Matvei Guskov (RUS)
18. RW: Cole Caufield (USA)
19. C: Trevor Zegras (USA)
20. D: Alex Vlasic (USA)

Okay, so it is how I remembered it.

Personally, I'm not as enamored with some of the CHL players heading in this season as TSN seems to be.

I like Cozens, but I don't know if I view him as the second best prospect heading into the draft. He's an intriguing combination of skill/size, but is the top-end first line center ability there --- especially when he's not one of the bigger kids on the ice? I'm not sure yet.

Dach is a player who left me wanting more. A lot of the ingredients are there, but I never came away with the sense that he was a kid who I could envision as a driver at the NHL level.

Lavoie is in a similar boat. You notice him because he's big and he plays with an edge, and that stands out when looking at a number of players who enter the season in the 5'11, 170-180 range. But I also see a kid who could be benefiting from being older than a lot of the other top prospects in this draft, and being more physically developed. In some cases you're talking about a player who is a good 9 months older than some of the other kids.

Krebs is an intriguing kid who at times has looked at one of the best players heading into this draft, and at other times looked like a kid who might slip. Is the high-end skill NHL-level? Is he more of the "ultimate support player" type? He could rise or fall considerably in this draft.

Suzuki is a kid who is probably one of the better pure skill players in this class, but the results and on-ice product wasn't always quite the sum of the parts. When he's on, he's pretty electric. When he's not, he hasn't quite shown the ability to bring some of the other elements of the game.

But, by-and-large, I don't think there's a ton that feels incredibly out of line either. I'm probably slightly higher on Byram than they are, I do like Podkolzin more than some others might. I also like the inclusion of Boldy in the top 20, as well as the love for Robertson and Broberg --- two defenseman who are somewhat polar opposites for me.

Just bear with it for now. This is Canada’s best draft in years, so they’re gonna pump their own kids tires.

I am kinda miffed that the US is playing Turcotte on the wing, but I won’t complain about having Hughes and Turcotte wreck fools all season
