Kalyiev being as high as he was on McKenzies ranking, again, like that is just very high for someone like him. Or they believe a ton in him.

Like what NHL upside does people think Kaliyev would have? Maybe I am way too low on him. I just think that he would become much more of a marginal guy in the NHL that just wouldn’t get to use his shot.
Definitely lots of mixed opinions on kaliyev and I understand where you’re coming from. Maybe his game won’t translate into the nhl. It would just be nice to have a chance at a better prospect if we pick in the early 20’s vs later 20’s with the jets pick. Could be a big difference picking 21/22 vs 28th

IF remains the questions though. We are fans of the Rangers. If there is any team that can find a way to severely **** up getting a top 5 pick, it will surely be our team.
Really hope not. The last three drafts have seen the lottery effect take place with teams moving up into the top 3. Please for the love of all that is holy let that be us this year. Too lazy to look but positive the Devils jumped from 5 to 1 when they drafted Hischier. This could be the year that the 4 or 6 slot jump.

I would be ecstatic if we just move up to 2.

Starting to get anxious

I'd even be fine with 3. Not nearly as thrilled as 1 or 2 but at least if we went to 3, the Rangers will for sure get their guy. Which, based on their targeting of Keller and Petterson, makes me comfortable with who they pick.

I agree they have targeted the right guys which makes me somewhat comfortable. They have had a good eye for talent in the later part of the 1st round and not just recently. Chytil, Miller, Lundkvist, Miller, Kreider, Skjei. They also have done well in finding NHL players past the 1st round. Stepan, Dubinsky, Callahan, Buchnevich, etc.

Like you said if they get into the drivers seat at 3 they will get the guy they like most. Whether thats Podkolzin or whomever.

What do people feel about the Rangers taking Spencer Knight late first/early 2nd? Conventional wisdom is never take a goalie that high and especially after using a second on a G last season it would be more questionable, but Knight looks like the real deal.

I’d rather take a cheese grater to my tongue than take Knight with an early pick.

No goalies before round 4.

We made a mistake taking Lindbom last year in the 2nd round. We should have taken Bode Wilde.

But nonetheless we took a goalie in the 2nd round and that is the kid to wait on right now. Maybe take a chance on a goalie in rounds 5 or later.

Otherwise let Georgiev and Shesty be the future and hope that maybe Huska or Lindbom later on pushes GG out to be the solid backup.

No need to take a goalie really.

Totally agree with both points but playing devil's advocate, shouldn't every pick be BPA in a rebuild like this one? He may be BPA somewhere in the second. I am actually hoping some GM goes full Milbury and takes Knight early leaving a player on the board for us who shouldn't be there.

They were never going to select Bode Wilde with any pick last year

couple thoughts

i do not think were in on podkolzin. we've gone russian recently and we have many russians in the pipeline so it isn't that. i believe podkolzin is 2-3 yrs from coming over and i don't believe this organization can afford to draft a player that high and wait that long. not happening.

also, personally, while he seems to be universally loved for his motor and skills, his production is weak. that's a big red flag for me.

i love how many here use "lack of production in international play and not making certain international teams" as a reason to question certain players who have crazy production in back to back seasons of league play as mvp and scoring leader as a 17 yr old no less, yet "no production" for an entire season doesn't seem to be an issue with this young russian...... because of just his international play.... odd.

kids played 29 games for ska (only 3 in the khl) this season total. 8 goals 13 total points. ????? really ?

playoffs 11 games. 6 points.

thats 40 games played and 19 total points. that kind of non production is worrisome especially since it includes mostly mhl & vhl games. his 3 khl games- zero point.

seems to be a non issue for some. his international play- small sample- was very good but again, small sample size and his invisible production this season says to me there's talent but is there 3OA talent ?

something aint right.

you take the lack of production and his "on the record" statement that he may stay in russia 3 more seasons, and its a big no thanks for me for this talented russian.

too many other better choices this year in the top 10

stay far away JG

Oh man I didnt realize you worked within the organization.

My apologies for the misunderstanding.
Based on everything they’re looking for from a character perspective, they weren’t going to take a kid who kept decomitting to schools and who, at the draft, had no idea where he was even going to play the next season

Sounds like the same uncertainty you get when you draft a European prospect, more specifically a Russian prospsect. And yet teams still draft them if they feel the talent and/or potential is worth the risk.

Bolde Wilde is a talented player who still gives me all of the same concerns I had last this time last year.

In fact, the Islanders 2018 first and second draft picks, though incredibly skilled and talented, gives me more than a few concerns.

Wahlstrom is now looking for his third playing option in two years, and struggled this season.

Noah Dobson showed me once again than he projects as a second pair defenseman and not a guy who drives a team.

Bode Wilde looks like a forward playing defenseman and plays a game very well suited for junior hockey.

You’re conflating coming over to play in North America with literately not having a team to play for, Wilde didn’t have a college team to go to, and didn’t decide to go to the CHL until after the draft

No, because unlike other positions, you can have too many goalies. And they have terrible resale value.

Count me in for it. I’d hate taking a goalie here but this is a franchise kid with actual SIZE!!! we love our 6 ft goalies here but we need a stud and he’d be 5 6 years behind Georgiev and Shesterkin who I think are very similar. Very Good but not star goalies imo. And it’s just my opinion

If he’s there at 31 that’s my pick there. I want two forwards with my first two picks

Haven't read much of the thread, depending on where we end up drafting, saying 5-7, would anyone be disappointed if we drafted Byram?

no moar goalies

hard pass
There does come a point where he becomes a very good value pick. If he is around in mid 2nd round (doubtful), like it or not, he makes for good value. One can make a hard case that he would to be drafted at that point. And if a miracle occurs and he drops into the third, no matter how many goalies you have, pounce.
