Why do scouts love Podkolzin so much??? I just don’t see anything that should have him above Byram

The irony is I think he can play in the NHL lot quicker than most guys but he has that contract which limits that or at least that's what we think.

Smart and skilled, At the U-20's he was deferring to his older counterparts, too much though. But the glimpses of skill were there. And scouts won't forget his Hlinka tourney, skills were on full display.

Every team's going to do their due diligence on him, if they get a feel that they can get him over here in two or three years I don't think teams will hesitate to take him with a top-10 pick.

He’s an electrifying player, he’s got good wheels, frame, hands, etc, it just hasn’t really translated to production. If a team thinks it eventually will, I can’t knock them for thinking he’s the 3rd best player in the draft

All the tools are there. Skill, skating, IQ, grit, compete level. Literally everything. If the numbers were there to back up the projection he could be in the Hughes/Kakko conversation. He's definitely an upside projection, but he has a reasonably high floor because of his toolset. Even if he stalls he's a decent bet to be a good 3rd line forward.

I think we may end up 5th
Buffalo is up on Ottawa 3-2 in the 3rd, chances are they win or at least get a point
Buffalo is 4th with 72 points, Red Wings right behind at 5th with 74 (we’re at 6th with 75)
If Buffalo wins the game, they’re at 74. Red Wings and the Sabres final game is actually against each other where one of them will end up with 2 points. Best case scenario is OT/SO for them which will leave one tied with the Rangers and one passing us which would make us 4th. Our last two games are with CBJ and the Pens, CBJ needs a win to stabilize themselves in the playoffs and the Pens will likely beat us. It’s a very realistic scenario in which we move to 5th, possibly even 4th. Preferably the Sabres end up passing us because I’d want a forward and Buffalo are more likely to select a forward than the Wings (Wings were reportedly supposed to select a dman last year until Zadina surpringly fell to them)
Avs-Hughes
Kings-Kakko
NJD-Podkolzin, who 8/10 scouts have at 3 and I think one has him at 2 but I may be remembering wrong. I really don’t want Podkolzin which is good. Devils can be inclined to select a C behind Hischier though, according to McKenzie the 2 highest rated C’s are Cozens and Dach right now. I’ll guess and say they draft Podkolzin though
Wings-Byram for the above reason
Rangers-Turcotte/Dach/Zegras/Boldy/Cozens are the guys I’d select in that order. I’m just hoping Buffalo doesn’t finish above us as I think their pick would be Turcotte. Hopefully no one behind us passes us in the lotto either but until now, I’ll be pessimistic and say that one team does

Gonna try and do a 1st and 2nd round mock again like I did last year

Podkolzin will be #3 until those combine interviews happen and will either stay around there or sink like a stone in the sea.

Gut feel? We are one of the teams that doesn't have him at #3.
Agreed 100% I think Podkolzin either goes 3/4 or falls to 10-12

Also agree with your gut feel-I know we love character, hard working guys, especially Russians, but I can’t see us taking Podkolzin

If there is a tie in the standings for draft order what’s the tiebreak (# of wins?)

Can easily see the rangers being tied with the red wings or Sabres at the end of the year.

Isn’t it ROW?

It is

At best we can tie Buffalo in ROW but it wouldnt matter if we get 2 points or more
We have to pray the upcoming Wings-Sabres game ends goes to OT/SO. Buffalo just beat the Sens which just put them at 74 with the Wings. We’re at 75. We have 2 less ROW than the Sabres and 4 less than the Wings, unless we win both our remaining games, we end up in 4th if the Sabres-Wings game ends in OT with either of them winning and at the very least, one will pass us. We also have to lose our last two games though which’ll be easy. Wishful thinking but it can happen

In theory then the following is possible:
Rangers lose next two and end with 75

Red wings / Sabres tie and one passes rangers and the others tie.

Rangers have lowest ROW so they’d be 4th.

He's got that attitude and relentlessness that will cause havoc for any defense and goalie. Got speed and skillful hands to add to the threat. Although I do think he is a top 5 talent, I think Byram is better in many categories. Byram should be the No. 3 behind Hughes and Kakko.

Saying that Podkolzin’s skills hasn’t transformed to production is kind of selective. He does have 15 pts in 8 games for the U18 team, that is not low. The year before that he had 30 pts during 21 games for his junior team, 12 in 13 for the U17 national team and 4 in 4 as an underager at the U18 WJC.

SKA is so deep, it’s hard to make sense of stats in that organization. Shorter stints.

I can bet my right arm that Podkolzin would put up numbers for the USNDP team.

I think most of us would put up points for the NTDP.

But his VHL/MHL production is nothing special. He's been a stud internationally.

Jets lose the division and lose in the first two rounds Rangers get pick 22 Kaliyev...Jets get to Western Conference finals the Rangers get Nolan Foote. what would you prefer? hmmmmm.....

Kalyiev being as high as he was on McKenzies ranking, again, like that is just very high for someone like him. Or they believe a ton in him.

Like what NHL upside does people think Kaliyev would have? Maybe I am way too low on him. I just think that he would become much more of a marginal guy in the NHL that just wouldn’t get to use his shot.

A regulation loss tomorrow guarantees us a 6th-worst finish or lower. Losing both remaining games in regulation guarantees us 5th-worst. Losing both remaining games in regulation COMBINED with Detroit-Buffalo going to overtime on Saturday guarantees us 4th-worst.
If we lose out it doesnt guarantee 5. We would need one of BUF or DET to get at least one point in their final game
