You're talking about Stepan? the last decade....

2008- Derek Stepan yay
2009- Ethan Werek
2010- Christian Thomas over Toffoli and Zucker
2011- Traded both are 2nd rounders for Tim Erixon?, no Kucherov :(
2012- Boo Nieves
2013- no picks
2014- Brandon Halverson, no Point :(
2015- Ryan Gropp
2016- no picks
2017- no picks
2018- Olof Lindbom

That's not enough. With the resources the organization has, we should be doing much better. We should be the ones finding the gems mid-late round

If we want to contend for a cup, our drafting needs to be near the best in the league.

So basically

- Massive hit
- Traded for Lindberg who contributed here and is an NHL regular, so wash?
- Whiff, Toffoli, Zucker and DSP were board favorites at that spot, they passed on all of them. Personally one of my bigger misses, though he'd be a perennial 25-30 goal guy.
- Yes, but at the time everyone loved that deal and he inevitably led to Rick Nash. Helps that Calgary didn't do much with those picks.
- Struggle to call it a hit, but it's not a miss. Hes an NHL regular who has looked pretty good this year, yay?
- No picks
- Whiff
- Bigger Whiff
- No picks
- TBD, but WTF?

Rangers had 4 scouts at the Dach vs Cozens game where Dach had 5 points. Dach’s still been sitting at 3 pretty much the whole season for me and has challenged the #2 spot sometimes though I’ve never moved him there. I really hope he falls to us or we trade up to get him.

He’s my current “guy”.

Reminds me so much of a Jason Spezza/Ryan Getzlaf. I think he’s the center we’ve been pining for. Him and Zibanejad could be f***ing disgusting as a 1-2 punch.

2017- Lias, Chytil
2018- Kravstov, Miller, Lundkvist

bold =
when Gorton 'took over'.

Not having draft picks and being average/below average on the actual ones you have = The situation we were in.

I can't even remember a time like this as a Ranger fan. If we trade picks anytime soon, it needs to be for a foundational piece

Cozens is a much better skater than Kirby dach. That size and speed is gonna be a weapon.

Cozens will be the more complete player whether in the middle or on the edge

Plus cozens has that power game that appeals to me. His shot is money too

Cozens for me over dach and Krebs

What do ya’ll think of Zegras?

I barely see the guy talked about here, he’s ranked pretty highly and it seems like his potential is up there with Dach/Cozens maybe.

I kind of have him in that cluster with Newhook and Turcotte, just a blip below Dach and Cozens.

The talent level for Zegras is high, but he's not necessarily the kid who inherently makes you sit on the edge of your seat. He's not presence that Cozens and Dach are, nor is he quite as exciting as Turcotte or Newhook, but he's got great hands, great creativity and a lot of hockey smarts.

If there's one knock on him, it's that he's not necessarily a blazing skater. But he's slippery.

#1 fan here. I have him just behind Dach/Cozens. He's an elusive kid with phenomenal vision who has shown he can play with other high skill guys or make lesser guys better. I don't think the has the high gear of a Barzal, but he's a similar player, IMO. The way this kid can move through the neutral zone and across the blueline is seriously something to behold. He can be going flat out and cut and change directions almost on a dime.

His best trait is his vision and passing ability. Tape to tape passes all game long but he has an uncanny ability to put the puck into open ice where a teammate is going to be. Similar to the way that soccer players put the ball into space for guys to run into. I've seen some folks say it looks like he has a "pass and pray" approach getting pucks into the slot, but I think it only looks that way because he's so damn good. He had a play at the 5 nations where he was skating behind the opposing net with his eyes up towards the half-wall, and he suddenly tucked his left shoulder down, spun to his backhand, and whipped a pass right onto the tape of Moynihan in the slot for a goal.

I'd like to see him improve his shot a bit. It's got decent velocity and is pretty accurate, but I think his release could stand to be a bit quicker off the blade.

My dream is Byram with our pick, and then somehow finding a way to grab Zegras behind him.

I don't see the Patty Kane comparisons for Hughes... Can Hughes score like Kane?

It's all going to boil down to two things -- does Podkolzin scare teams, and if NHL scouts and GMs agree with Central Scouting that the three Canadian centers and better than the three American forwards. If that's the case, then one or two of Turcotte, Boldy or Zegras will be there at nine, 10 or 11.

The Rangers haven't drafted a Canadian in the first round since McIlrath -- Miller, Skjei, Andersson, Chytil, Kravtsov, Miller and Lundkvist since. Heck, of the 14 kids they took from the CHL since 2014, only five were Canadian. They've have bad luck with their CHLers.

Almost all teams are pro-CHL except the Rangers and maybe Columbus and New Jersey.

I'm not the only one partial to the NTDPers, so if they were all gone and I had to take one of Dach, Cozens, Krebs, or Byram, I'm taking Byram first, then Cozens. Krebs plays a lot like Howden so there would be some redundancy in the organization. Dach has No. 1 center upside and is the best pure playmaker after Hughes and Zegras but his skating kills it for me.

Byram would immediately be the best defenseman in the pipeline. Better than Miller. Better than Lundkvist. Cozens is a smarter version of Kreider and more versatile because he can play either role.

The surprises? I would say Kaliyev, Harley, Leason, Knight and Dorofeyev are some of the names who might crack the top 10. Maybe not those names exactly, but expect two or three surprise kids to bump the notable names down further.

I agree with all of this!! Good post!!

With the amount of clamor over the Rangers organization looking heavily into the CHL (the WHL specifically), their past shows a lot of selection outside of Canada. I mean, they could very well be studying up on Dach, Cozens and/or Byram, but I feel with the previous selections, they'll go USNTDP or Europe....

Is Caufield the best sniper/scorer in the 1st round?

I feel like he should really be a target even if he rises ala Kravstov or someone we could trade up for ala Miller. He gives you that feeling when he has the puck like something good is about to happen and that he's in control.
