Can teams get around this by stealthily using a 3rd party in the west? Or does that just not ever work in practice even if it theoretically would?
No it happens every now and then, San Jose basically got paid in terms of upgrading picks to be an intermediary for getting Hoffman to Florida. Ottawa did not want to trade him in the East. Ottawa basically got nothing (swaped a guy they couldn't keep there for a bad contract) and then San Jose turned around and turned Hoffman into a second and two mid round picks.

Interestingly the second we got somehow (iirc San Jose traded up to take a goalie) and turned it in to one of our best prospects in Rees.

We won’t get Crawford. He was offered $3,5M for one year by the Hawks. He’s leaving because he wants more. Our front office won’t offer more than that....or at least shouldn’t.
Just because he wants more than 3.5 doesn't mean he'll get it. And he could have just wanted more from the Hawks considering they're in no man's land between contending and rebuilding, along with having to pay extremely high Illinois taxes. He didn't have great stats in the playoffs but he was still very good, often their best or 2nd best player every night.

I know he is not likely to get more, but if they are paying you the same, he might not be very motivated to up and move. The only caveat to that is if he is chasing a championship. I doubt he's doing that given his name is on the cup a few times. I'd be more inclined to think he is chasing a legacy at this point, which means stay in Chicago.

I think the Crawford situation is not that simple. After the playoffs were over what he said is that its not all about the money for him: He wants to play more. That is something Carolina can give him, especially if they trade one of Mrazek or Reimer. He also said he wants to compete for a Cup. That is something Carolina can definitely give him as well.

In terms of money, I think that he might have had an issue with the one year deal. I would not be surprised if he takes $3.5 or so per year for 2-3 years.

I think he would be an excellent fit for Carolina. Question is would Carolina be interested you think?

Demko is more a matter that the guy is a legit blue chip goalie prospect and has put up high end numbers at every level so far when given a shot. I don't even take this playoff into consideration, his play with BC and then as a 22yo in Utica was more than enough to sell me on him.

I don't think Andersen would be bad here, I just don't think we could afford him this year cap wise, and definitely have less than zero interest in giving up anything remotely close to what Toronto wants for him.

Holtby... Agree to disagree. He's probably fine with say the Isles or Dallas, but he'd be hot mess here imo.
What teams want to get for a player, and what they get, can be vastly different. Look at Pittsburgh and Murray. If the market lines up, I think he'd work well here. I have a hard time believing we couldn't afford his cap when he's only 500K more than a guy like Kuemper that you mentioned in cap.

I have no problem being pretty much the only person that would be okay with Holtby. I've said before though, it'd have to be on a realistic contract. You think that's impossible I think I recall, but we'll see how it all plays out. If he does get someone willing to give him long term at big money, of course I wouldn't do that. And while I certainly would be grabbing a guy like him and hoping he plays better than he has the last few years, I've also probably watched him as much or more than anyone on this board given the area I live in, my wife's fandom, and the fact I've had a Caps ticket plan during his tenure. I do think he would succeed better here than he would in his last few years in Washington.

I think it's probably for the best with Williams. Given the uncertainties of the year and the fact that as his last comeback was really kicking into gear, and then he had to stop and start, I think it's the right thing. Congrats to him for a great career, putting us back on the map, and for helping us win a Cup.

Bracco not qualified...he's been a HFLeafs trade chip legend...I can't even remember a time he wasn't thrown in as the sweetener for a trade because he was an NHL player blocked by a plethora of better wingers on the team. (FYI 4G in 44 AHL games last year)

It happens. Happened to the Sens recently, so they adapted their trade clauses to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
