Is Saku Koivu scouting for the Habs? What are the chances they have 3 players on the Finnish world junior team this year?

I wanted Zadina to ride shotgun with Drouin, but there is a huge hole at centre in Montreal that isn't easy to patch.

Beaudin would have been a pick to trade up for.

We'll see about the rest. 18 year olds are hard to judge. I hope nobody is rushed.

This is how I see our prospect pool after today's draft:

1. Jesperi Kotkaniemi
2. Victor Mete (I'd say there's a chance he plays in the AHL next season)
3. Ryan Poehling
4. Noah Juulsen (Didn't fully graduate)
5. Josh Brook
6. Jesse Ylonen
7. Cayden Primeau
8. Jacob Olofsson
9. Cameron Hillis
10. Joni Ikonen
11. Michael McNiven
12. Charlie Lindgren
13. Jake Evans
14. Alexander Romanov
15. Cale Fleury
16. Cole Fonstad
17. Lukas Vejdemo
18. Allan McShane
19. Brett Lernout (not sure if he's waiver eligible, if he is, then he gets removed)
20. Will Bitten
21. Jarrett Tyszka
22. Rinat Valiev
23. Jack Gorniak
24. Jordan Harris
25. Daniel Audette
26. Jeremy Gregoire
27. Scott Walford
28. Simon Bourque
29. Alexandre Alain
30. Hayden Verbeek
31. Brett Stapley
32. Arvid Henrikson
33. Michael Pezzetta
34. Antoine Waked
35. Nikolas Koberstein
36. Samuel Houde

Is mete being #2 an idictment of our prospect base, or do you just think he's a fanatastic prospect.

I think mete could be a decent 2nd pairing guy. Do you see more?

Edit: Man, these boards are really acting up, but when I take a step back, I realize there is no sure fire front line player, so mete being #2 does make some sense.

This is how i feel about our draft

Montreal Canadiens Draft History at hockeydb.com

We havent picked this many players in 15 years

People are upset with a couple of the picks, ok sure i understand that, but id be more disapointed in messing up 3-4 picks in a 7 player draft than messing up 3-4 in a 11 player draft, we got some GOOD players and a lot of them highly ranked with a lot of potential upside
We drafted 7 Centers, i used to joke about that and they did it, we need 2 to pan out, weve drafted 9 in 2 years... SOMETHINGS gotta give

coupled with last years draft where we went D heavy, people are not going to be used to having a prospect pool like this.. there will be SO many people to track next year its going to be a lot of fun, because we all have a pretty good feeling a lot of these guys are going to excel in their respective leagues, and hopefully, the talk of the WJC is about all the Habs prospects that made it and are standing out

one can only hope, we need it

My feelings are pretty meh

I like Kotkaniemi though would have preferred Zadina
I like Romanov just not where we picked him
Ylonen, Olofsson, Hillis all seem like good picks, the rest I'm not so sure about or don't know enough about them.

With a 3rd OVA you expect a lot more hype/hope. You expect a guy who if he won't turn the franchise around you can at least see building around him. I don't see that.

It seems pretty clear that the only chance to trade down and still get Kotkaniemi would have been moving down one spot, and so I can understand why that didn't happen. But not being able to package something together to get another 1st rounder seems like a real missed opportunity.

And as much as a lack of trades shouldn't be part of the draft evaluation having Pacioretty and Byron still on the team and it looking like more and more they'll be there opening night just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

You can't see Kotkaniemi being part of our core?

I mean...our last #3 was Galchenyuk who missed an entire year and people were high on him anyway.

You've either become jaded or Kotkaniemi was too much of an obvious pick to excite you.

A big center will be part of our core if he has an ounce of talent.

By same token #3 isn't necessarily guaranteed franchise player position.

2017: Miro Heiskanen
2016: Pierre-Luc Dubois
2015: Dylan Strome
2014: Draisaitl
2013: Jonathan Drouin
2012: Alex Galchenyuk
2011: Jonathan Huberdeau
2010: Erik Gudbranson
2009: Matt Duchene
2008: Zach Bogosian
2007: Kyle Turris

End of the day you just hope you get a solid player in there. History suggests there's good odds of picking up a capable player, maybe a #1B type of center. Habs should not stop here though. They need MORE top picks in coming years to really stockpile and do a proper rebuild.

My feeling is this draft cements the turnaround for the Habs organization, which started with last year's draft. After decades, the C position has finally been addressed.. in that they now have viable top-2 center prospects in the system, in Kotkaniemi & Poehling.
They added several more C projects, if any of them hit all the better... but with those 2, and Danault/JDLR, we can be solid down the middle going forward.

You can bitch about this pick being taken too early, guy you liked wasn't taken.. fact is none of us know how good they draft will end up being. What we do know is that these past 2 drafts they have targeted the C position, that was their plan.. and they delivered on it.
So I like where we'll be 2 years down the road, next few weeks should tell us what type of team we'll have until then.

My disappointment of the weekend is they fact they haven't managed to deal Pacioretty so far, so looking forward to turning that page.. hopefully bringing an LD back.

I like the draft but it feel like something is missing, maybe is because I feel they reach on some pick maybe it is because we pick a lot of similar small player or that 3 of the last 4 pick were stright out of left field...

C Jesperi Kotkaniemi:
I think this pick. I was told by my friend that it was between Filip Zadina and Jesperi Kotkaniemi. Ultimately they went with a Center. Kotkaniemi is still 17 so in 2 years or so he’ll be really good. Timmins said he’ll be a top two Center. I like his two way game like Ryan Poehling. He’s got size too. Right now he’s listed as 6’2”. When he’s 19-20 he should be 6’3” 200 lbs. Kotkaniemi 6’3” and Poehling 6’2” down the middle for our future. From what I read he’s comparison is Anze Kopitar/Sasha Barkov.

W Jesse Ylonen:
I also like this pick. He’s fast and run the gun type from the videos on YouTube. He backchecks too. Not physical player. Lov s to shot. He can also dangle too. Should be an NHL player maybe top 9 forward in our team. Has size 6’1”. Kotkaniemi Ylonen played on the same line at WJC. His father is Juha Ylonen who was a checking forward with Phoenix a while back.

LD Alexander Romanov:
This was a surprise pick for me. Never heard of him. Timmins said they couldn’t wait. From the scouting report and videos, he looks to be a puck moving defenseman with a hard slap shot. Skates well and is on the smaller side. Still I think this is a boom or bust pick. Management is taking risks and I like this move. We have many second rounds so why not take a chance.

C Jacob Olofsson:
Unlike management last pick Romanov, I think Olofsson is a safe pick. He’s 6’3” already is skates very well like DLR. he could also play wing but was mostly used as a Center. He plays with Filip Hallinder on the same team. I think he has a good chance of being a regular in the NHL.

C Cameron Hillis:
Just turned 18. He’s a small body but big heart. He was third in scoring on his team and got mostly top two lines this season for the Storms. I’ve seen him once and he looks like an all three zones player. I didn’t know he was tops at the combine. Fluid skater and has the making of two way forward. Probably a project and bottom 6 forward.

LD Jordan Harris:
I’m not too sure about this pick and know little about the player. I think this is a project pick. Players drafted in the 3rd to 7th round are project picks.

C Allan Mcshane:
I was surprise he was still available. I read he was a late to second round projection. The 4th Center we selected this year. I like his speed and he was 2nd on his team in scoring. He should develop into a bottom 6 forward or AHL player.

LW Jack Gorniak:
I don’t know muc about this winger.

C/F Cole Fonstad:
Never seen him play. Only know he was second in scoring in his team.

C Samuel Houde:
A project pick and most likely won’t make the NHL.

C Brett Stapely:
Project pick.

Okay so this is the thread when we have a little fun but we have some wise kids coming in here to tell us that we should shut up and wait 5 years but when we come back 5 years we are told to shut up and that's hindsight and that we should move on? Great. So that's why we won't shut up and just play the game for what it is…..Again, don't worry, we all know that the real draft isn't won or loss today but...in the context of who we would have or wished we would have picked up...here we go. Oh and for the ones who also comes up with ''well give us what you would have done to see how great you would have been'', I'll say that for sure I will say it. But if I'm better, if I,m equally better...or even if I,m slightly a little worst, that means that you should fire Timmins AND EVERYBODY ELSE working for the Habs as it seems I can do the same job with 99.9% less opportunities…..

1st round:
KOTKANIEMI: Awesome pick. For me, would have been him or Zadina. But because the team sucked so much for years to develop C's, we simply had no choice. You do a better job, you would have had a Kuznetsov and Co in the system, you go Zadina no question ask. BUt today...was the right move. Side with Timmins.

2nd round:

YLONEN: Great looking player. Skates fast, does a lot of things fast. I think it's a good pick. It reminds me how much I liked Collberg pick too….Would I have picked him? Probably not. Prefered McIsaac...but this is not a bad pick. I will side with Timmins here.

ROMANOV: Did I see Romanov play? No. Did I watched the YouTube vids? Yes. Does it matter? Nope. 'Cause it means nothing. A hockey player does not build itself by putting YouTube vids one after the other. So what do I based myself on for being dissapointed and not understanding that pick? Based on the overwhelming lists made by pros who didn't have him near that position. And based on players I would have picked that I've seen play. I would have been more much excited with Wilde, with McLeod, with Iskhakov, Thomas, Addison...name it. And then, here comes Timmins explanation…so…..Romanov is a guy that already play pro hockey and that's an Emelin filled with energy….wait….where did I read that already? Oh yeah, almost an identical report on a certain Pavel Valentenko. So, TODAY, I'm dissapointed. Does it mean he's a bust? Obviously not. Does it mean he'll never do anything? Of course not. We will watch him closely…..if he does, Timmins was right and everybody else wasn't. But on that….history is not on Timmins side. And there will be a few other times I'll say this about today's draft. So FOR THE FUN EXERCICE THAT THIS IS….AND WHATEVER IT MEANS IN THE END, I can't like this pick. Yet. Would have probably side with Timmins if this would have been a pick later on. Still, no famous stats. Playing in the MHL, with absolutely no English, and with a big KHL contract coming….and with an average size to boot….This is the type of homerun Timmins think he still can produce, or...not.

OLOFSSON: Tough to be against the best junior hockey player of a men,s league. Though my main area of concern is his skating and agility. And at some point, you keep hearing and reading stuff about him and it's really as if Joonas Nattinen would have collided with Jacob De La Rose…..so somehow, it's not that reassuring. But we will have to hope that he has more offense than those 2 guys. And that he will improve his skating. I would have chosen Hallander, or Fortier or Morozov but I think I'm eager to see what he could do. So not really against that pick.

HILLIS: Good little player indeed. Awesome vision for sure. Just not sure that it will translate with men. Would have went Jack Wise there or Nordgren or Lauko or McLaughlin….but again, not really against that pick either. Would not have picked him but that's not a bad player we got here. His key will be ceiling.

HARRIS: Never seen him play. But with what we see and read, he's another Casey Staum. Another Mac Bennett. Kid that only trait is skating. And yet nothing else. We've actualy surpassed ourselves this year, we drafted 2 Casey Staum….1 D and 1 forward…..later you'll see….Just made no sense when the guys I named before we still there Nordgren, Laugo, McLaughlin...goalies (we will see that later on that post…). Hate the pick.

MCSHANE: A guy I hate loving or loved hating all year long. So inconsistent. But talent is there. Strange to hear that he might have some attitude problems, I guess that's not a problem anymore. Anyway, I guess it's a good bet to take at that position. Okay pick. Would have went Xavier Bernard here though. McShane was a big time faller that we decided to rescue. Time will tell if Timmins was right to do so. Eager to see what he'll do.

GORNIAK: Never seen him play. But what on what we see and read, again, all the makings to be our Casey Staum up front. All on skating. And nothing else. I even read how skills and hockey sense are questionable. So we actually drafted a figure skater…..anyway, we will see. But Blade Jenkins would have look great there

FONSTAD: Well here's one pick I have absolutely noting to say against. And will say more...he would have been my pick. So aside for Kotkaniemi, he's actually the only other pick I Love and would have picked with no hesitation. Great value.

HOUDE: Well never was a fan. But I'm expecting a MUCH better season this year that will probably make people believe that we actually hit a homerun. Not sure we did despite the upgrade in stats. But we will see. Yet at this point, and especially knowing what we know now with Hawkey, we should have gone full goalie. Hrenek, Gravel, and others.

STAPLEY: A WTF moment especially since we traded to get him. Didn't improve that much his 2nd year in the BCHL. There is just nothing there unles they believe ND transforms their players into superstars. But there were other guys to go for...can't believe we didn't pick Bouthillier there. Or Salda. Or Hughes. Or like 10 to 15 guys I had on my list that wasnt picked.

So I have 1 awesome pick in Kotkaniemi
4 very good picks in Ylonen, Hillis, Fondstad
1 good pick in McShane
1 average pick in Houde
4 WTF picks in Romanov, Harris, Gorniak and Stapley

So yes, some of my WTF could be homeruns. I know. Not the exercice here. Just like some of my very good picks could be duds though….But today, I can't give more than a B-. Mostly driven by Kotkaniemi.

And while it made sense to go for needs with him...I never think we should for the rest of any drafts. And we did. We'll see how it will translate. My 2 cents. Calm down if you hate it. Thanks if you like it.

I havent seen much of our new kids but I have a good feeling about this draft, I started to watch Kotkaniemi's more closely when his name started come around and I really liked what I saw from my limited viewving, he has great tools, compete level, hockey IQ, offensive creativity, soft hands, great vision, only his skating is I would say average, the rest is first line center material.. at worst we have a great second line center in our hands who can play on the first PP wave, thats a very good pick for the future, a highly skilled center, exactly what this team has been lacking for years, and yes, the attitude looks great, seems like the kind of player very easy to coach and a great teammate...

As for Ylonen, boom or bust type of prospect I guess, Timmins could have hit an homerun with that pick, he certainly fits the criterias of the fast paced type of game and identity Habs are said to be headed on, that kid looks deceptively fast with great stickhandling skills, able to make plays at top speed, I really like that...

Im not sure how many of the kids we drafted in the second day will become quality NHLers in the long run, but I have a good feeling that the level of talent we got in this draft will increase the level of internal competition in the system and ultimately make our farm and main team alot better... it will also give our GM assets and more flexibility to make trades going foward when some of those kids reach a certain level of notoriety... all positives as far as Im concerned...

Question for you guys. I think Islanders, Detroit, Rangers and Habs had the most picks of the draft(I hope I didn't miss a team). How do you rank them right now?
I'd say:
Islanders
Detroit/Habs
Rangers

I would say Detroit did better in the first half, but we did better in the second half
When both Wahlstrom and Dobson slide to you at 11th and 12th overall, thats not a robbery, thats like winning the jack pot twice!! You can draft jerk the rest of the draft and you still end up with one of the best draft out there... but talking about the rest of their draft, I had Wilde basically on my ND list since I just hate players with such low hockey IQ while Ishkakov is skilled but plays alot on the perimeter, Im not impressed with those picks at all, the rest of their draft I have no clue about them..

Id rather have Wilde than Romanov. Also think Jenkins is a steal. Detroit also had a really good first 2 round, but not so sure aside from that.

I've been lurking on this board for years, essentially for the informed views on some posters on the draft, on the development camp and on the trades. I'm no expert and I don't watch much prospect videos aside from the top of the first round.

I'm a bit stunned by the level of cynicism and bigotry of some posters here. I know that some of the direction's decisions in the last years have been pretty unpopular, but it seems to cloud the judgement of some people around. Honestly, it reduces considerably the pleasure I get from my visits. Nowadays, I have to scan through pages of people bashing every decision this team makes in order to getting any kind of interesting and useful information.

Seeing all these anti-Québec comments here and there doesn't help either. This team hasn't been drafting much players from Québec in its recent history. The last one was in 2015, so implying that Samuel Houde was drafted because he is from around here doesn't make any sense. I guess the scouts have seen something in him that you guys haven't through your stats scanning.

Finally, can some of you just chill out a bit about those late rounders who you haven't seen play? Past the third round, the chances of making it to the NHL are about 20%. So yeah, every single one of these picks are a gamble. Personally, I don't care much about these picks and I'll reserve my judgement on them for a few years down the road. But eh, I don't watch all those players play all year long like some of you do...

When they talked about picking for upside.. I thought it was a load of bullshit like it usually is but they definitely did it this draft. Outside of the three picks I question.. they went for high upside picks.

Realistically how many prospects do we have at the WJCs this year?

USA: Poehling, maybe Primeau
CAN: Brook? Outside chance at 1 of this years picks
FIN: Kotko/Ikonen/Ylonen
SWE: Olofsson
RUS: Romanov

One of my biggest issues over the years has been Bergy's insistence that you can't trade for centers, you have to develop them, and then he didn't draft pretty well any over that time. That sure changed this draft.

I like the players we drafted. A lot. I think our first two picks have a chance to be very impactful players and the Russian has a chance to develop into something special.

Everyone loves the Islanders first picks because we're more familiar with them and Sam Cosentino is in love with them, but I'm sure Lou would trade both for a Kotka, Tkachuk or Zadina if they could (and probably tried prior to drafting).

Make no mistake, the Islanders did well with who they chose (and I don't think theres a debate there) but I think we did much better @ 3 and I'm very happy with our other selections.

Well, that's the highlight of the year for me. Many thanks, to those of you that closely follow this and post your thoughts. I have no idea how we did but the overall feeling I get from you all, is that we did alright. Looking forward to another bad season and hopefully trades for picks next year. Then it's out with the old and in with the new (hopefully), and we are on our way to the future. Maybe we can win another cup in my lifetime. :naughty:

I don't understand something

Many people are saying "in my list I had him " here or there

Are you guys scouts ?
Have you guys been a watching "all"these players ????

I trust McGuire more than hf board scouts. Lol

If McGuire says our #3 player was picked to early then I believe him and you guys should also

McGuire didn’t like our 5th overall pick in 2005. He’s not more informed than Timmins

I don't have a particular feeling about this draft, though I would tend to considerate it a positive overall with a few headscratchers. I don't have much knowledge on prospects and cruelly lack time to "study" them. I just want to thank you fellow posters sharing infos you have and reports. Even though some consider HF posters as not legit, I am thankful and it needs to be said. I've been able to follow the draft not being completely blind to the prospects names and abilities thanks to the community as I was overwhelmed by my children, my wife abroad, living in a different time zone, painkillers blurring my mind ...

Thank you guys ! :yo:

Overall I'm hopeful this is a good draft that produces at least 3 full time NHLers. I really like the Fonstad, Hillis, Ylonen and Kotkaniemi picks. While I was on the Dobson bandwagon(shocked he fell as far as he did), they FINALLY addressed the #1C position. I'd be very happy to see them extend an invite to Chase Wouters for camp. I've already moved onto the Kirby Dach 2019 campaign.
