I think Columbus would match the offersheet to Fantilli anyway so it's mostly a moot point, but I think the biggest argument to make is that getting EP for a 1st is a lot more cost effective than getting Fantilli for 4 1sts and both guys offer similar upsides. I figure both guys project to top out at 70-80 point 1Cs, with Fantilli it's just about him progressing more but with EP it's about him rebounding.
Or we can keep all of our firsts, imagine that!

Robertson-Fantilli-Chinakhov
Crosby-Kindel-Rust
Horcoff-Zonnon-McGroarty
Howe-Broz-Hayes

Nikishin-Brunicke
Galvas-Korczak
Pickering-Karlsson

Murashov-Blomqvist

You can just pencil this team as the 2030 cup winner right now.

A mid/late 1st would be lucky to even turn into what EP is at this point, let alone what EP was.

People here overrate the hell out of draft picks. For a pick in the #18-#24 range (where I'd assume the Penguins 1st falls if they add EP), there is only about a 35% chance that guy even hits 100 points in his NHL career.
  • 18th: 41.0%
  • 19th: 28.3%
  • 20th: 38.3%
  • 21st: 45.0%
  • 22nd: 35.6%
  • 23rd: 35.6%
  • 24th: 35.6%

Even if EP just is what he is at this point, he is most likely better than whatever the #20 pick you trade for him turns out to be. Even if EP called it a career right now, it's less than a 10% chance that a guy picked in that spot will have as many points as he has had in his NHL career. It's roughly a 9.2% chance for guys taken in those spots to hit 500 points in their NHL careers.

This is funny when you consider that the Pens could easily have a lottery pick this upcoming offseason.

I doubt Howe broz and Hayes are gonna be regular NHLers.

I also doubt Horcoff is a 3rd liner. He's top six pwer forward or nowhere. I think pretty highly up him so my guess is top six.

If you can build a competitive team with what you have and some smart trades and good asset management.....why not 🤷‍♂️

There are so many teams who have hit bottom and tried to build through the draft only to have to tear it apart again and again.

People don't know how lucky this organization has been and it's clouded their thoughts on how teams are built.

I’ll take Fantilli over 1 maybe and 3 possiblies.
I think you severely overrate Fantilli.

It also depends as to where you think we'll be picking. If Say we were Dallas or COL and had huge cap space that might be a different story if you're thinking late 1sts (24th-32OA). But to not see us or expect us to be in the bottom third of the league at least one or more years in the next four seems naive.

And, there are a lot of teams that have built through the draft and have been very successful.

Was CHI, COL, FLA, DET and TB all lucky?

It's not only worked in PIT. That's a lazy argument. Look over the past 20 years. Look at the teams that won and look who their core pieces were and where they were selected.

Now, if you're not well run it aint not gonna matter. But if you are run well you gotta chance. As far as what we're doin now, no chance!

Something I've never seen brought up here is the lack of accountibility for orgs who do draft high but the soil the bed anyway. That's not on the draft picks exactly, that's on that teams upper management and scouting department.

And that gives such ORGS an excuse to not be scrutinized enough. If you're afforded those picks but don't aptly augment around them that in and of itself does not mean it's not a path worth taking. Sure it's worked here, but it's worked many other places where by those teams were run well and aptly developed around the high draft picks.

Having that in mind I trust this ORG to draft and develop effectively otherwise sure, try for the short cuts since you can't develop properly on your own.

I’m fine with this. There is not a single competitive team that built their core by trading 4 1sts for one player.

Detroit hasn't done anything lately and it's continuing to fall apart.

They are a very example of what I am talking about. I mean if you have 15 years to wait sure.

You don't need to necessarily build your team strictly from the draft and we aren't at that point currently
