I don’t think my comment was in reply to bringing in Nurse or not, it was about what they’d be doing with the 3rd pair LD spot. People are saying “if they don’t re-sign Shea it will be because they’re good with who they have internally”, but I think that’s baseless.
AHHH yes, Agreed, I do believe he will be working on the defense, I obviously really really hope it's not what's being discussed haha

Yeah the reason I think it’s mostly a contract dump is this. I find it very unlikely that a guy came to the AHL last year, then left to go back to Europe and then would come back to the AHL next year. Just not something you see players do very often.

It is unusual.

But it is also unusual to say teams acquire player rights they have zero interest in when they don't have to. The Penguins didn't have to. If they really, really needed to offload a contract right now, couldn't wait a couple of weeks to be down to 34/50, couldn't persuade a guy going back to Europe to mutually terminate early or didn't want to because Koppanen's right are that important... they could have taken future considerations from Florida. Uhm. Maybe Florida are right up on their reserve list and I've missed that? But I doubt it.

It is also unusual for a guy with Okuliar's numbers to leave after one season. This isn't like he's Oula Palve or Plotnikov giving up with no hope, and it isn't like he's Riikola or Zohorna who take a good long try at it and then give up. Which you could interpret it as not liking NA (but then he'd came back after CHL, so probably not) or you could interpret as a lack of faith in the org.

Throw in the fact that his career has taken a sharp upwards tick since leaving based on international numbers, and I wouldn't be surprised if Dubas actively wants him and that persuades Okuliar to come back. Whatever happens, something slightly unusual has happened - it being that one seems as feasible as the others.

Pieniniemi is gone.

Seems like a contract dump, Okuliar went back to Sweden after a mediocre AHL season and I doubt he’s coming back. Curious if this is a precursor to anything.

Probably just moving on from a guy that had fallen out of their plans. Doubt it amounts to much. Pieniniemi was probably going to run out his contract and go back to Europe when he didn't advance.

If it opens a spot, which they were jammed up so maybe not, maybe they bring Alexeyev back now to have another Russian to help Ilyin.

They might not see that as a priority, but they might also see it as a spot they want filled just with someone on a smaller contract than Shea's, particularly when it comes to term.

What I do raise an eyebrow at is the idea that they want Solovyov and Pickering to compete for it. Dubas has gone out of his way to add opposition for this team's younger players every step of the way. Him turning over the battle for the 3rd pairing slots to Solovyov and Pickering on the left, particularly as the right will by Solovyov/JSI/Brunicke? That would be quite a change up in attitude for him.
This is where it will be interesting. If Dubas is serious about improving the defense, he has to throw Letang down into that mix. Will they? Great question.

If they wanted to bring in a 3 LD, I wouldn't have brought Solovyov back. Pickering should at least be 4th on the depth chart even if it is from WBS.

I don’t see why we needed to “open up a spot” for anyone or anything. In 2 1/2 weeks we’ll have 15 spots. If we needed one today we could’ve just passed pending UFAs to anyone that owed us a favor.

Dubas probably had nothing to do with this trade, this is an AGM move.

Clearly a handshake deal about trading up for Viggo with Fla at the draft
Keep my wife's name out of your mouth.

I just don't get trading the rights to a guy who doesn't want to be here for the rights to a guy that definitely doesn't want to be here.

To my knowledge, Okuliar is a winger. Maybe he has played center (or was a center) but he is a winger now AFAIK.

Alexander Alexeyev signed with Salavat Yulaev Ufa of the KHL, I think it only becomes official on July 1.

Maybe he REALLY didnt want to be here. Cue the conspiracy theories!
I mean they could have just let him go back to Liiga and terminated him for not reporting if it was that big of a deal. I really don't get how this whole saga played out when it really could have just been dealt with much more simply.
