To be fair, lot's of guys off the books in that $40mil, including Makar. But it goes away pretty fast. Smart of them to grab a couple of these younger RFAs like L'Heureux and Svechkov.

Makar - 12.6mil so that takes it to 27.4. Roy - $5mil, Lehkonen - $7.5mil. That's $15mil to sign 3 defensemen and BUG. Still tight though I imagine someone from the ranks goes to make room just like Nuke just did.

They need to get more up front too. Kadri and Nelson are going to fall apart soon. Nelson was awful in the playoffs

I was just cruising rosters and was looking at Boston. They have that Khusnutdinov who looks pretty legit and I looked into how they got him...from Minny in the Brazeau trade! Man it would be great if Brazy could bring us another return like that, especially given the fact that he way outscored his old Boston pace.

Indeed. I was actually telling my brother that I lowkey think Detroit would be a decent destination while taking back Copp or Compher and Kiiskinen.

I don't think NHL GMs are looking at hockeyDB when trying to determine player value :dunno:

I think the reality is that Rakell and Nuke are on the same tier of players, they're top-6 wingers that are probably solid to good 2nd liners. Meanwhile I think Rust is better than that, I'd argue he's a lower end 1st liner because he produces too much and too consistently to be called a 2nd liner. I think Rakell and Nichushkin have similar value, I'd give Rakell a bit of an advantage based on not having baggage like Nuke but you're still talking like 2 2nds or maybe a late 1st. Guys of that caliber over 30 with term just don't bring back better than that. Rust you're definitely getting a 1st+ back for, not with a huge + but you're definitely getting a 1st with something on top.

I know Rust is frustrating to watch and he definitely benefits from playing with Crosby, but he's 68th in points and 62nd in PPG in the NHL since the start of the 2019-2020 season. Meanwhile Rakell is 102nd in points and 130th in PPG. I don't think those two should be viewed as equal, I think Rust is a tier (albeit a small tier) above him.

I think people are selling Rakell short but every year he loses value. Teams at this point probably just see him as a rental even with the extra year just because of his age.

Raks is great... you just have to get him on the right year. Based on trends... he is due for a good season next year so that should up the value!

For guys of that age, I actually feel like having less term is a positive. I think Rust at 3 or 4 years left would have less value than Rust as a rental or with 2 years left.

I would agree that Nuke and Rakell are comparable players which worries me about Rakell's (and thus Rust's) value around the league.

Highsight is 20/20 and I was fine with the decision at the time and am generally still okay with it, but man do I wish we cashed in on one or both of them earlier.

I'm not sure how much him being a rental changes his price though, particularly at an age where teams don't want to hold onto his contract for a long time.

An example would be that Oliver Bjorkstrand as a year and a bit rental probably (big complicated multi-player deal) got better value than Nuke as a guy with three years left despite being roughly in that same kind of tier at 2nd line wingers. And one playoff only rental Mantha was 2nd and 4th, very close to Nuke given one guy has been good in the playoffs and the other hasn't.
