Salary Cap: Dr Dubas Cap Thread: He wants the Nurse

Just because Dubas hasn't done anything yet doesn't mean he isn't going to. Last year, he didn't make any trades prior to the draft. He made three trades at the draft (albeit two of those were just moving down and then up in the draft), and then he made another three trades in July (Nedeljkovic out, Dumba and Silovs in).

2024 offseason was pretty similar. No moves prior to the draft, then made several afterwards.

Holy f***, the Caps sacre the shit out of me. By that I mean I'm scared Dubi is gonna keep trying to be them and is gonna blow the rebuild to give Sid one last ride like the Caps are doing this year of OV.
Look on the bright side. Dubas, at least last year, thought we were way behind the caps prospect pool. So we've probably got at least 2 more seasons till he does..... whatever the Caps are doing.

The Caps are absolutely loaded now. They were my darkhorse SC team before the Tuch trade.

And Buffalo has cleared $21M of cap space in one day! What are they up to? Helle?

The thing about the Caps is while we've seen a few teams win it all recently with deep top 9s with questionable star power but, beyond them being the most questionable of the lot, those teams all had a real dedication to team defence.

Do the Caps? They certainly don't by the numbers...

They were #10 in GA against in the entire league, so they must be doing something right. They could definitely use an upgrade at center, though.

Tuch basically replaces Ovechkin. Lateral move.

I think their biggest improvements will be Hutson and Protas especially them being on ELCs.
Ovi hasn't retired, has he? My guess is he gets re-signed once the dust settles. He was 32-32-64 in 12:00 5v5 and 4:00 PP so it's not like he's washed up, even if he is controller disconnected more often than ever. Besides, Tuch offers WAY more than Ovi besides just the scoring, so much more than a lateral move, IMO.

Imagine if they were somehow able to land Larkin. They are $13M under the cap with essentially a full roster and they have all their 1st round picks the next 3 years and all of their 2-5 picks after this year.

No that’s isn’t? Unless you think the Penguins were a contender last year.

The #2 in the Metro team hasn’t reached the cup finals since 2017 with the Penguins.
Like I said above, this past season the Metro was horrible outside of Carolina.

Compare the Pens team on paper last year and this Caps team so far going into the year.

Idk I just have a tough time saying that adding Kyrou and Tuch suddenly takes the the Capitals to being on the same level as the Canes, Panthers or Lightning, which should be the criteria for a “contender” IMO. Hell, I don’t even know that I have them over the Habs or Sabres either. I’m not even saying this to mean “Washington sucks”, they just don’t have the horses to go toe to toe with these other teams.

A team where Jake Guentzel would arguably be your best player isn’t a contender.

I think a full year of Hutson is going to have a HUGE impact.

Per Moneypuck, no goalie in the league saved more goals than they were meant to than Logan Thompson. That's what went right. He stood on his head for them last season too, and that was only good for 10 playoff games because a so-so attack and the third leakiest defence in chances in the playoffs is too much for any goalie.

If they tighten up in front of him they'll be scary and he'll win the Vezina. But I'm not sure the team that just got Tuch and Kyrou understands that. I really hope they don't anyway.

1. Contenders dont reach the cup finals all the time.

2. If you assume the top 2 seeds in each division are the 4 best and evenly matched, they will reach the finals 2.5 times on average in 10 years. Once in 10 years in that small a sample is well within reason. This is also a very convenient cutoff as if you look 11 years instead of 10 the metro 2 seed has both made the finals and won the cup twice.

3. For some reason especially the last 20 years or so, people cant seem to differentiate between contenders and favorites. Theyre absolutely contenders just not favorites. I assume this comes from all more common “ if your not a favorite then just tank” disease that has proliferated. I blame the internet.

By this same logic the neither the penguins or sharks were contenders going into the 16 playoffs. Or nashville in 2017 And yet…
