People seem to think this is refferring to Couturier
No wonder the Oilers have spent so long trying to find a better deal

People seem to think this is refferring to Couturier

I don't see Nurse!
The Caps finished #12 last year with the same number of points as Vegas and a better goal differential, and that was without Kyrou and Tuch as well as PLD for only half the season. Vegas without injuries could have beaten Carolina as 4 of the 6 games were within 1 goal (not counting an EN goal). If you put Thompson on that team instead of Hart, maybe they do beat them anyway (Hart had one game above an .879 SV% in the series). Yes, the Caps are still a longshot, but I wouldn't be shocked by it, either. The Pens were 4th in the league in 2016, 2nd from the start of April. If people couldn't work out they were contenders rather than just there to make up the numbers, that's probably a mistake.
Since then, only two teams have won the Cup without being top 8 in the league. There's the Blues, another case of the late surge who were 2nd in the league from Feb, and the 25 Panthers, who stumbled in but then turned it on as a veteran made for the post-season team.
That's the question. Are the Caps likely to be a top 8 team in the league, or at least finish like that even if they don't do it all season? Teams regularly finish top 2 in their division without reaching top 8 - I don't know the last time that didn't happen to a team. They don't regularly win the cup without finishing top 8.
Letang 50% retained to Montreal for Gallagher (or whatever) and a 2nd that Dubas covets.Based on the way last year ended - and the fact Letang's contract has opened up to involve teams he COULD go to.... idk. I think there's a slim chance he's not on the roster opening night.
Then again it might be something they just wait to do until next season. His name won't surface anywhere (yet) but if any team full of youth is looking for that veteran presence it wouldn't shock me either.

lmao
It's too bad Buffalo got rid of their only cap dump (Greenway) in the trade to Chicago, because that could have been viewed as an "asset" for them if we took that contract. So if you're a team in the top 10, why do you want Rust or Rakell? You probably don't. Buffalo would be the only one in the top 10 I would think would be interested, but if Rust or Rakell are the main pieces coming back, does Buffalo really give a shit about a late first from the Pens + Horcoff or Zonnon? Putting myself in their shoes I just don't see how that's an appealing enough package.
Fair enough. I hope I'm wrong because they need to be bad for a while.Put Thompson on Vegas and that's about a 35 goal swing by Moneypuck's stats cos all of Vegas' goalies sucked, they finish 5th in goal differential instead of 13th, their points totals probably follow suit, we think of them as a heavyweight, we're not surprised they're there and so on...
... instead, bit of a Cinderella story, right? And a bunch of those come real close but they never seal the deal.
But Washington already have that guy baked in. A league average goalie and their goal differential goes from hanging out with Vegas to hanging out with the New York teams. I don't think the rest of their roster matches up to Vegas, nevermind Carolina.
I'm not gonna rule out the possibility they keep evolving and finish next season looking a powerhouse. Grab a couple more guys, see a few kids really step up. Maybe, like I said, embrace a more restrictive style of play although I don't think that blueline's made for it. That blueline would really have to buck the trend to work out. But I don't think it's there today.
This makes sense except that Kähkönen is on Montreal now.The scenario I could see making a ton of sense:
-San Jose gets Nikishin
-Winnipeg gets #9 and Kahkonen
-Carolina gets Hellebuyck
Clean up this deal to make it even for everyone.
We could unburden them from Kotkaniemi. Maybe EK as a much better version of Sean Walker? I doubt they want or need Rakell. What would Carolina expect where it doesn't decimate our prospect pool? I'm not giving up first rounders for this type of deal.
Raks for Nikishin as the foundation is what I'd be interested in. If it's anything more significant then walk away.
I think they have in-house replacements for Tuch already. I don't know who of Benson, Doan, Thompson or Quinn they would drop to the 3rd line. So, how about Rust or Rakell ro replace Tuch?
A bit older, but makes half of what Tuch is geting from the caps. Also pretty close in production with Tuch.
Maybe not the flashiest move for Buffalo . But I doubt they want to take a step back next season and Rust/Rakell are pretty safe bets to give the same production as now for the remainder of their contacts.
Very interested in the 20 overall they own. Maybe we need to add a bit fot it tho?
R/R+54 for 20?
Too bad. I really want another 1st, and get youngerI think they have in-house replacements for Tuch already. I don't know who of Benson, Doan, Thompson or Quinn they would drop to the 3rd line.
I would do it. 20-something 1sts get you Kapenens, Poulins, POJs, and Poehlings more often than not, 2nds are whatever, and one of our prospects is also whatever. There's a good chance you don't get anyone as good as Nikishin with any of those picks/prospects. A 24-year-old projected top 4 with top pair upside? Yes, please. It may end up looking like a cheap price to pay in the very near future.Yeah. That is ridiculous. Im a pass.
We don’t need to participate in this pricing just because we feel antsy.
Those are good points. They certainly seemed to know what they had in Koivunen.Carolina is not dumb. Their pro scouting dept is good. I’m not saying that guys can’t have success outside of their system but they have had Nikishin up close every single day. If they are willing to trade him rather than sign him a) they probably don’t see him as a no doubt future star b) im not going to be the guy to take the risk on seeing what he’s like outside of their structure c) they’re getting full value.
Didn't they play him on the right side, though? There they just have Chatfield and Walker ahead of him.
They do have $13M in cap space left with a full roster except for Ovi's spot...If Caps got Kyrou and Robertson that would be unfair.
It's funny you mention him because I not long ago looked up if we could take on his buyout as one of our "assets" to Buffalo in a trade. I was pretty sure I already knew the answer is 'no' but I had to look it up anyway. They’re going to make a documentary about the Jeff Skinner reclamation and resurgence Dubas is about to pull off
Ha! I had the exact same thought with those two as having "talent in some capacity."Could still be us. Girard for Nurse is a hockey trade. Brazeau for Nurse is a hockey trade.
