Salary Cap: Dr Dubas Cap Thread: He wants the Nurse

Yeah exactly on Malhotra. And like sure I guess Bjorck is enticing… but is he really that much better to a point where you’re going out of your way to swap them. You already have a degree of certainty on Kindel and the ceiling isn’t really all too different than those two IMO. Maybe Bjorck is more likely to reach it?

Idk. Like I said. Think you gotta just stick with what you got, not the mystery box.
But what if it's between a boat and a mystery box?

Zary needs a change of scenery, hasnt been the same after two nasty knee injuries. Wasnt forced fed ice time and didnt do anything with the time he got. Id be fine with Dubas taking a flyer on him, but hes more of what the Pens already have in the middle 6.

If we dont land Nurse, Maatta is a LHD I wouldnt mind bringing back for cheap.

I’m seeing mixed info on Zary’s skating. In clips it looks to me like he just glides with the puck a lot which makes him look very slow, but he’s otherwise got some decent legs. When he does move his feet he can push wide and get a step. Don’t know if these are before or after the knee injuries, either. What’s Edge say?

1. Contenders dont reach the cup finals all the time.

2. If you assume the top 2 seeds in each division are the 4 best and evenly matched, they will reach the finals 2.5 times on average in 10 years. Once in 10 years in that small a sample is well within reason. This is also a very convenient cutoff as if you look 11 years instead of 10 the metro 2 seed has both made the finals and won the cup twice.

3. For some reason especially the last 20 years or so, people cant seem to differentiate between contenders and favorites. Theyre absolutely contenders just not favorites. I assume this comes from all more common “ if your not a favorite then just tank” disease that has proliferated. I blame the internet.

By this same logic the neither the penguins or sharks were contenders going into the 16 playoffs. Or nashville in 2017 And yet…

The Pens were 4th in the league in 2016, 2nd from the start of April. If people couldn't work out they were contenders rather than just there to make up the numbers, that's probably a mistake.

Since then, only two teams have won the Cup without being top 8 in the league. There's the Blues, another case of the late surge who were 2nd in the league from Feb, and the 25 Panthers, who stumbled in but then turned it on as a veteran made for the post-season team.

That's the question. Are the Caps likely to be a top 8 team in the league, or at least finish like that even if they don't do it all season? Teams regularly finish top 2 in their division without reaching top 8 - I don't know the last time that didn't happen to a team. They don't regularly win the cup without finishing top 8.

They say his mother was a hamster and his father smells of elderberries.

Max speed 20.79 (average 22.17)
11 20-22 mph bursts (average 71.4)
388 18-22 mph bursts (average 313.7)

The last one is above average, the rest are laughably below. And, since they don't pro-rate the bursts, I reckon its' probably worse than it looks. Well known not great skater McGroarty would have had 419 if he'd played the same number of games.

If you go back to 23-24 before the injuries things look a little rosier - max speed of 22.15, 28 20-22 mph bursts, 370 18-22 mph bursts - but still pretty subpar stuff. However, his understanding of when to very speed and deceive defenders about when he's going to do that might well be more advanced than his raw skating.

Obviously the top 8 teams have a better chance thats why theyre in the top 8. But also 2 in ten years is 20%.

If you telling me the teams outside the top 8 have a 20% chance im thinkin that proves my point.

Hes like the 4th slowest in the entire league which is kind of sad since hes only 24.

from an Article
"Tyler Bertuzzi's top speed in MPH has been 20.1. Jamie Benn ranks second at 20.2 MPH as well as Kevin Hayes, Pius Suter, Andrei Kuzmenko, Connor Zary, Kaapo Kakko, Corey Perry, Evgeni Malkin, and Aatu Raty all at 20.8 MPH or slower."

St Louis and the Panthers were examples of rosters that would have been in the top 8 if they hadn't had weird seasons. Rosters that weren't in the top 8 because they just weren't that good don't have a shot.

Thats just subjective after the fact.

The entire point is that there are olenty of teams that are contenders. Whether its the top 8 by whichever objective measure you want to use. Or a team outside that 8 thats coming in hot or a team outside that eight that probably maybe shouldnt be outside that 8 on paper.

However you slice it any given year theres 8-14 teams you cant make a reasonable case to win it which is exactly my point. There obviously favorites within those 8-14 thats coming will “usually” win but thats why theyre the favorites and not just contenders

That's all I'm expecting at this point. Even before all the trades started, I expected them to run it back in a similar fashion and hope for another lucky playoff run.
I'm talking about your point on the league. In 2026 we had five or six real contenders, a bunch of mid teams, and 4 straight up awful teams. The league isn't on the verge, it's already been there for about 5 seasons.

Hopefully between Robertson and Larkin, Dallas won’t be able to keep Bourque…I do think him and Wright are the best options to take a swing at for the Pens among forwards…I think the young D guys who could be available will be prohibitively expensive….maybe we can look at some guys who don’t get qualifying offers

Yeah, adding teams as "should have been top 8" is subjective.

But my point is every single one winner could be seen coming. There's been no surprise or underdog winners for a long time.

And as such, I disagree there are plenty of teams who should be listed as contenders. There's a short list of contenders - probably about 6 most years - and a bunch of pretenders there to make up the numbers. The pretenders can have wonderful runs but actually win it? Nah.

As things stand, Washington are not in the contender list.

Dear Kyle,

I thought it would be ok if you went for that mid 20s stud player. I figured you'd just flip him in a couple years after trying to send Malkin off with a good year.

But these prices are nuts. Please stay away. Do more good bargain stuff.

Sincerely,

Tojo
Are we going with Closeout Kyle or Discount Dubas?

I look at the prices these teams are paying and will they be better… maybe… sure. But it’s a mortgage at 20% housing crisis prices.

Unless a team comes to Dubas predraft that’s desperate I’d just use the picks hope that saner mind prevail post draft.
