Would be interesting if the NHL kept records for officials in terms of penalties called, against whom, which players. Would love to do a little digging on Graham Skilliter and crew.
There are standards believe it or not that they have to adhere to, but fans aren't privy to how they're graded!
It's my understanding that each coach after every game sends in a written report and a critique of the officials, the critique has to be backed up by video.
Each referee is graded on a points system (
as an example each game could be worth up to 50 points or what have you, they are then graded by the league based on the game reports. Sometimes they get a call from the league, sometimes they get a visit from a management type, but if they do a particularly crappy enough job in a game, especially a nationally broadcast game, a game which say creates a lot of negative media and fan reactions, then they would possibly be asked to come in to have a face to face meeting with, the league, attended by Stephen Walkom Senior VP and Director of league officiating and their union rep. The meeting could end up in a written warning, or being assessed a fine or even being suspended, which means no pay for the time period they don't work. The officials are privy to the game reports that get them in hot water, I've always wondered if some of them don't build up a certain amount of recrimination with individual players/teams and or coaches!
A running tally is kept so by the regular season's end, those with the highest totals will get to do the playoff games(lot's of extra dough on top of their salaries)
If an official scores very low over the season they could end up back in the A, or behind a desk and having to re-qualify or at worst looking for employment
