I'd look at Europe. Coaching is still a North American hive. There's gotta be a Finnish guy out there that can coach in this league.
Interesting name for the future: Jussi Ahokas who is currently coaching Kitchener Rangers in the OHL.

The other thing with Panarin fundamentally changed the way this team plays is he slows things down. He's got people around him slowing the game down. The rest of the league is increasing their quickness with the puck. It's not even about pure skating speed. It's just doing everything fast. You've got this guy who likes to get the puck from the defenseman, survey the ice, maybe make that patented rink-wide pass, maybe carry it up yourself because you're uber-talented that only you could do that. Everyone else gets enamored by it. Then everyone starts coiling back before heading up ice. The other team has time to pick out their favorite garter belt and stockings before they actually have to start defending your rush. Holy shit i can count to 10 while they pass it back behind the net to being going up ice and make that first pass. Or the forward comes back from the neutral zone because they cheated for a rush and does a huge circle curl to accept the first pass like at 50% of NHL speed. It's not fooling anyone. And after all that, it's all perimeter shit in the offensive zone. Meanwhile, the guys who actually try to play hockey are your bottom 6 guys who are just borderline good enough at times. It's no fun anymore.
This is a good comment. The Rangers seem happiest when they stop unexpectedly & let the defense whiz by, leaving passing lanes open. They look like geniuses. But once the other team catches on, this style doesn't work, and we get what we have now, a team that doesn't know what to do and whose passes get picked off.

At this point, what’s left?

Pride? Entertainment? Dignity?

Nope.

I really, really hope Drury doesn’t think he has just one or even two more trades to make and that it’s going to be as simple as Lindgren for a late 2nd and Kreider for a pick and prospect. I really, really need him to acknowledge that more changes are necessary and that the TDL will not be the end of the trades. We need to be active at the draft, over the summer and continue moving guys out until this team has a genuine new identity.
An identity would be nice

Worst coach ever Lindy Ruff is the sole reason that series went 7, but they still won, so...

Coaching is marginal.

Maybe bring that concern to me what the team is good and that's a worthwhile discussion.

Right now, it's lipstick on a pig.
Right, but my point was even then the devils were just as good if not better 5v5 in 2022-23 as they are this season. Because it’s about their core players not so much who the hell the coach is. If you have the right players eventually you will find the “right” coach.

Devils had a heck of an offseason and were pretty darn good in 2022. Is not just a coach. The coach they fired last season did well just the season prior to that. Guys do not forget how to coach. Look at last years Cup winning coach. He has lost a lot of games and won a lot of games over the years for different teams. He does not just forget how to coach in some years and remember how in other years.
Just as players can decline, so can coaches.

Had my coffee. It’s 9 in the AM and I’m nursing a hangover from too much Macallan and shiraz last night so will keep my comment/questions brief.

How much worse can it get before something, ANYTHING is done?

And what does “done” look like as I can’t see a way out of this….

Yes. But they look utterly confused on who to cover, utterly confused on when to and when not to pinch. All three forwards going deep, doing nothing and getting turnstiled on the transition. It's bad. And it's exacerbated by players not playing with familiar mates with the trades and healthy scratches.
Couple that with the complete lack of talent.

Kakko and Lafreniere not becoming generational superstars didn't torpedo this rebuild.

Kakko and Lafreniere not even turning into first line players torpedoed this rebuild.

Nuke the whole thing from orbit. It needs to be nuked. Panarin is a unicorn who was good for quite a time. It's over now. He himself has slowed down. This whole style of play needs to be nuked.

i'm happy to lose games in the name of drafting talent. but if we are going to play losing hockey, give me blue collar bruisers who take a pound of flesh and give no quarter rather than skilled shrinking violets. not rempe, obviously, but edstrom/berard types. I don't need stars to lose effectively, but i need players who can build a culture of hustle and pride while losing.

It can’t be stressed enough how whiffing on all 4 of those picks will set this team back about a decade. Stop putting money into dancers like Panarin and pour as much money as you can into an All Star scouting staff.
I mean to some extent it's incredibly shitty luck. There were no questions about picking Kakko or Laf, that's not on the rangers

Are we so far in the dumps that we're now back to wanting to hire sexual assault enabler Quenneville and make the lockerooom even more toxic than it is now?
People think Quenneville is some hardass that would whip this team into shape but he'd likely just try to ride the vets the same way and then be angry at the press when they questions him

Dog breakfast? More like devil's dinner.

Not a shock. Did not watch again. I'll watch some hockey on the 26th. That will be the WJC's. There really hasn't been much line cohesion for a long time. The poster boy of are shit falling apart is Zibanejad. Not to belabor that point but he just might not have it anymore. This team is not making the playoffs.

I looked at the two fights. I don't see a clear winner in either. I'd give Cotter an edge and I'd give Carrick an edge but.........

It's the second time Dillon and Carrick and Carrick has an edge in both. As I said when we signed him Carrick has been a fairly frequent fighter the fast few years. He doesn't fight guys who don't or won't fight. He fights tough guys and most of the time bigger guys. With someone like Dillon though once he gets past the 20 second mark or so he runs out of steam. He wears down quick. These days he's pretty tough guy though. Go back 15 years or so and he would have been getting his ass handed to him regularly because you couldn't run out of steam against a guy who could go a minute or longer and a lot of them could do that then. There use to be some marathon fights.

And going off the board on Kravtsov?
Going off the board on Lias?

You can't waste 4 top picks during a rebuild and then just decide to run with that. It doesn't work.

We went through an entire rebuild and didn't draft a single first line player or top pairing dman.

Yup those two were garbage and probably why Bobrov and the Euro scouting staff was jettisoned.

e: just saying the insanely bad luck with top picks didn't help on top of their shitty previous picks

I've always been in the camp of "everyone signs that deal," and really the same for Igor tbh, but now that I think about it, no. f*** that. Innovate.

You couldn't trade a core piece coming off of a great season until Florida did and won a Cup. Change the way business is done.

That's what I want. A departure from the same old shit.
I only hold the organization accountable for things that random Twitter nerds were right about at the time. And there were unpaid randoms saying Mika sucks and Buch good with data to back it up

My opinion on the talent drafting usually went the way of it being on the player for not being good enough, but I've come to the conclusion that this org is a cancer for young talent. Failing on #1 and #2 should be absolutely impossible to do, but the Rangers found a way to take hopeful prospects and make them your average NHL'r.

If we went through a full rebuild we'd have more kids and upcoming talent and they would've played first, got the most ice time, and ran the special teams. This org has been coddling vets for so long that they know nothing else and the easiest scapegoats are the youngest players on the team.

It wasn't a rebuild. It was a re-tool with shittier tools than what you gave up.

My memory is poor. I did not like the swiss army knife pick of Lias at all but were either considered off the board at that time?

Oh 100%. Just to be clear, when I see whiff I just mean they missed. Definitely a combo of bad luck and bad drafting.

Its f***ing insane. Back to back to back to back Top 10 picks at 7, 9, 2 and 1.

3 of them aren't on the team anymore. Two of them straight up aren't even AHL quality and the remaining 1 might be good but is far short of franchise raising.
