Only thing good about being an insomniac is I am used to functioning on this little sleep but still dying today because I don’t do caffeine.

Hope they are saving the last puck for Bob because we know how goalies are let him do it when the jobs done.

And finally this tweet really annoyed me for some reason.

Well isn’t that special out of 7 periods they played their game for one, I wonder what could have caused them to not play their game for the 6 other periods? Maybe it was all the humidity in Raleigh.

This just screams bullshit though and why I simply cannot trust analytics. Not taking anything away from Bob, he was absolutely unbelievable but so was Freddie in OT.

The Panthers dominated overtime and had about 4-5 high quality chances they probably should've scored on. Way more dangerous then the eventual GWG.

Carolina was the better team in the 1st and 3rd but for them to "deserve to win" over 70% of these games? Complete bullshit. Florida dictated play for over half the game lol. Canes look very pedestrian offensively 5 on 5.

That's more correct picture IMO:

Canes generated lot of their expected goals from 6 PP opportunities, including 5 v 3.
You can't score more than 1 goal on every minor penalty.

that was my initial thought as well. how the hell is that number so high when we had 3 1v0s on anderson (montour, duke and benny) PLUS the verhaeghe miss PLUS the 2v1 for lundell. i mean that should be 5 expected goals right there.

the canes had those two shots in close, including the backhand from like 3 feet away that i would consider "expected" goals but i'm struggling to think of other really high danger chances.

doesn't make sense.

I think we will be ok as long as Florida stays out of the box. Carolina's PP was 20th this year which is very mediocre but they still dunked on Florida. And they have an elite PK. They definitely win special teams wise. I am a big fan of the aggressive tactic the Canes and Bruins use to kill penalties, I don't know why Florida is so passive, it hasn't worked all year.

personnel.

I think the Leafs roster is horribly constructed and the team was blown out of the water in 5 games by the Florida Panthers, a team that is hamstrung by awful contracts signed by Dale Tallon during a drunk spending spree on his way out of town.
Tallons core is still carrying this team and the biggest reason is bob this postseason.

lol you just know they're gonna hire Quenneville for next season, I can feel it. A coach like that is what's missing for their team, to give them that fire. He's also got family in the area and was originally drafted by the Leafs. Story writes itself...
I wonder if they'll go through that PR nightmare. Gallant would be a good hardass option without baggage.

You got it right. The Canes probably have a better team on paper but still can't get it together. Again #hockey101
Well if u took tkachuk and Verhage out of our lineup I don’t think we would be winning too much. Svech and patches are big big losses. And again 4ot In ecf I think they have it together just fine

This shows u don’t really understand expected goals. U don’t get an expected goal per breakaway

Dubas made a core 4 with goal scoring forwards with low to average defensive skills.

That core ain’t gonna win jack.

If it's Toronto, I could see the hockey media being way less critical. And as much as I hate to say it, winning cures all. Coach Q is still the best coach out there, without going into the other stuff. Maaaaaybe Rogers/Bell could say no as public companies, but Leafs are desperate to win and may not care about PR if it can be done. Putting on my financial hat, at the end of the day, there would be basically zero financial downside and only potential upside.

Gallant doesn't seem to get along with anyone and seems to have the opposite view on analytics that the Leafs do, even if Dubas is gone.

Tallon: Barkov, Ek, Bob, Luo, Lundell,

Zito: Tkachuk, Reinhart, Bennett, Verhaeghe, Duclair, Lomberg, White, Cousins, Staals (lol), Montour, Forsling, Gudas, Mahura

It's not Tallon's team anymore.

Just one small correction, Lundell was drafted by Zito. Really only three players left from Tallon's tenure.

It was an ignorant comment by said poster, especially when in the next post they mention Panthers would be nowhere without Tkachuk and Verhaeghe...

i think what that shows is that expected goals is (at least partially) bullshit.

benny and duke had point blank chances which, if they'd just shot immediately, would've almost certainly been goals. verhaeghe had a yawning net also.

but you're right - i don't know the precise definition of expected goals. i've not studied the stat.

however, basded on your comments, what you seem to forget is that "expected goals" is a made up model (by someone who almost certainly never played hockey, no less) and not gospel handed down from the hockey gods.
