Do you like this team?

you think we get a dman? that crew in the Marlie thread, say Little green is 100% NHL ready but they have been saying that for a long time now

I don’t know. All I know is Dubas will make the right move.

Do we need a D man? For the playoffs, having strong D on an offense heavy team wouldn’t hurt. With unforeseen circumstances like injuries, our most vulnerable areas is probably D and our goaltending situation. We have many capable competent forwards who can fill in should Nylander or someone is off the roster due to unforeseen circumstances.

Ideally we get a competent goalie who has shown postseason brilliance. As well as D and last priority is a top 6 forward. If Dubas addresses all 3 areas, that would be tremendous

Nobody can "fill in." for Nylander

Yeah I can say I like this tea, I don't know where everybody is going to play there are about 17 NHL Forwards on this roster, If Freddy is healthy for game 1 of the playoffs, the goalie depth is ridiculous, and they still have room to make moves, I would like to see a depth D man like Kulikov or Vatanen, but if they want to bring in Mike Hoffman or Scott Laughton I'd be good with that too.

Keep spending money buy as many players as you possibility can.

i have this warm and fuzzy feeling with this team and i think they matured a lot after the bubble
it kinda really sucked missing the playoffs
but i think it was a wake-up call for the young stars missing the playoffs for the first time imho they maybe thought playoffs was a given because the skills and talent they have
colombus winning humbled them and the backslash they got from the fans for missing the playoffs

This is the first version of the Leafs in a long time that you can actually get behind as a contender. They never had a defensive game worth taking seriously before Dubas and Keefe took over. Now they have that plus two top 5 NHL scorers.

Indeed, this team does everything but hit and fight. We’re elite at controlling the puck/game, elite offensively, and quite good defensively. We need to fix the PP, but that’s a fixable coaching issue IMO, the talent is there to have an elite PP. And I personally find the players likeable and the team fun to watch

Excited to see what we can do fully healthy. I’d love to see us try a “3 strong lines” approach, like:

Hyman - Matthews - Marner
Galchenyuk - Tavares - Mikheyev
Foligno - Kerfoot - Nylander
Spezza - Nash - Simmonds
Depth: Engvall, Thornton, Robertson

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Dermott - Bogo
Depth: Sandin, Hutton, Liljegren, Marincin

Campbell
Rittich
Depth: Andersen, Hutch

Foligno/Kerfoot/Nylander could be our version of Hagelin/Bonino/Kessel.

Not enough give a F in this team, they tend to lie down and take it if they think they are going to lose. To many of the EA sports fancy plays, I wanna be on SportsDesk nightly highlights plays. They don't know how to take a punch and get back up.

We are not quite good defensive, we are not even good defensivly at best we are average.

I wouldn’t panic too much. Winnipeg is a good team, they’re top six is arguably better as a group than ours. We were also playing without Matthews and Nylander on top of new additions like Foligno and Nash.

You ever take a second to look at the standings?

Jets don't deserve a classification alongside the Leafs, they're .14 P% away from 4th place, as much as it upsets you.

I'm guessing you're not as confident about this today?

Both teams have played 44 games, we have 60 points to their 57. Our goal differential is +28, there's is +27. It doesn't get much close than than, seems like two roughly equal teams to me.

You made your post 10 days ago. Amazing how much things can change in a short period of time, isn't it. ;)

I think this group has potential to do something special. I have seen more determination from all parts of our roster this year that we lacked in the past. I think topping the Canadian division and making the conference finals would be a nice present from the hockey gods after years of laughable and embarrassing results.

Yeah the last few games have been bad, the goaltending is still a huge question mark and the PP is starting to worry me big time but the potential is still there to make a lot of noise in the playoffs. BTW, I'm not sure but IIRC there are no conferences this season, get to the final 4 and our opponent could come from any division.

Making the final 4 ... TBH, I'm not sure I'd even consider that much of a present. I say that because despite all our issues, we're still the favourites to win the division so doing that is merely achieving a "satisfactory" as far as grades go. Go further than that, win that third round and go to the finals, now we're talking.

I think everyone likes success and in North American team sports, success means playoff success. Lose in the 1st round (again) and I'll bet there will be more people who will want to tear this team apart then people who like it. Win a round, hard to say but I'd guess that there will be plenty of people who like and plenty who don't like. Win two rounds and most people will like this team, win three and go to the finals and there will be very few who still don't like this team and they won't dare to open their mouths anyway.

I do like this team. How much I like them ... get back to me when the playoffs are done.

Agreed not time to panic but they were playing their 5th game of a road trip on a back to back ...

Stinkers happen sometimes, sometimes to us. JT looked good last night :)

Yup, still like the team and its chances. PP sucks and our goalies need their heads checked, but we're still a contender.

One area that needs improvement IMO is our (healthy) bottom 6.

When you look at the players that are typically on hit (Spezza, Kerfoot, Thornton, Simmonds, Mikheyev, Engvall) -- what have they really done?

Spezza has been decent, and somewhat versatile playing in all 3 situations and putting up points in a bottom 6 role.

Mikheyev has provided some decent penalty killing.

Kerfoot has killed penalties, but not with the same level of success as Mikheyev.

Beyond that...Thornton & Simmonds put up points when along for the ride with Matthews & Marner. Otherwise they've been consistently chasing the play. Engvall has kind of been "just there". Hopefully mixing in Foligno & Nash will help, although I can't help but think they really needed one more offensive weapon in there so that the offence doesn't dry up if you have an injury or two.

2 of them will come out of the lineup for playoffs with Foligno and Nash around. I'll be surprised if Engvall/Thornton survive those additionss

Something like
Foligno - Kerfoot - Spezza
Mik - Nash - Simmonds

Should be a much better bottom 6. Thornton really creates problems in our lineup with his lack of.....well everything

One would hope so... I actually really like what you've done with the pairs there.

Spezza doesn't have the speed to play centre anymore; but can certainly win a faceoff unlike Kerfoot. That trio should give the Leafs a reasonable "shutdown" unit that can also contribute offensively... although I might switch out Hyman and Foligno -- get more size with Tavares, more speed with Kerfoot.

The 4th trio should also give the Leafs a reasonable defensively reliable group, although I suspect Simmonds will be somewhat useless in that role.

I like them. Even when they aren’t playing their best, they still have twice the structure to the game than they have for probably a decade. Just need goaltending to shore up and get our big guys healthy.

Generally yes, but at the same time because the bar they’ve set for themselves is so high there’s a corresponding level of frustration when they underachieve or backslide with old bad habits.

But there are also some underlying things I find frustrating about the core and that is a burning angry desire to win and win ugly.

Lol 112pt pace with their goalie imploding and people don't like them.

Phenomenal.
