Do you believe in Frederik Andersen? Would you re-sign?

No. I would definitely have an issue with it, if it's the result of his poor play. If he's the 2nd or 3rd best goalie in a series because he stunk, that's an issue.

What can you expect him to do when his counterpart is on fire? Skate up the ice and fight him?

Andersen generally does his job, and gives us a chance to win each game and series. That's what he's supposed to do. Lots of goalies lose games for their team, and those tsams still manage to win a series. But Toronto loses and people find ways to blame it on 1 or 2 soft goals over the course of 5-7 games.
0 for 8 when it counts ... sorry but we need a $$$ goaler who makes 1 more save than opposing goaler

Holtby is not the goalie he was when he won the cup, why else would WSH let him go to UFA. It makes more sense to compare markstrom.
Purely a CAP move for Caps ... they could not afford 4.5M AAV that Holtby requested ... it happens in CAP era where players can't fit into a teams CAP ... da player is not gonna take less and da team can't afford da hit ... it is worse this past year and next due to COVID

If it were 2017 I’d agree with you. Andersen is now in his second consecutive sub 910 save percentage season. While I wouldn’t compare him to Holtby either, I wouldn’t really consider either of them comparables. I still believe Andersen can rebound but Markstrom has the better recent track record. Personally I’d prefer to sign Andersen to one or two year “prove it” contract and re-evaluate. The goalie market has been odd and we saw what happened with another goalie with recent struggles and past numbers in Bob.

Washington had a terrific young, cheap goalie ready to go and they were capped out
And BTW, Andersen is not tbe goalie he once was either. 2 years of regression now.

So many things to look at: #1 is he good enough?...if no he's gone...if yes, move to #2...#2...if he's good enough can we afford him?... If no he's gone, if yes, move on to #3...#3 if he's good enough and we decide to sign him, who has to be moved to accommodate his signing?... If the answer is "no" anywhere along the way who do we sign to replace him? If he's signed, we're already tight to the cap. Do we move Rielly (needs new deal in 2022) or Nylander?...I think in a cap world there is little to no chance we re-sign him. In a cap world the dice has to be rolled at times, with every team. It's just the way it is. Either Campbell shows he's good enough to possibly handle #1 goalie duties or they find a 1A or 1B to partner with him.

When he’s in the zone he’s great. But when he is in a slump that can go on for weeks to months. He has consistently remained inconsistent. He’s a great goalie but not elite. He isn’t going to lead us past a playoff round.

I have a metric that adjusts a goaltenders SV% based on shot volume vs. league average and differentials in high danger/low danger chances faced vs. league average and over the last 5 years Andersen adjusts to .919 and Reimer to .918.

Now Andersen has had the heavier workload but Reimer has played better than most give him credit for.

If Campbell could pull off a full time tandem role it would be a pretty cheap combo.

Reimer had a worse team in front of him (no Matthews Marner or Nylander or Tavares etc) and abysmal defense. He carried the team to a 2013 playoff spot (it’s first in over a decade this was a dark period in Leafs history) when we had no business even making the playoffs. He stole games for us especially games 5 and 6 vs Boston but that narrative is often ignored.

don’t get me started on the Bernier situation. Didn’t make any sense whatsoever to not give Reimer the starting job full time. He is currently killing it in Carolina as they have the best goaltending tandem in the NHL so far this season

If we were to re-sign him, I wouldn't be comfortable going over his current 5mil price tag or longer than 2 years. I'd be just as okay giving Campbell a respectable tandem type guy and going 1A-1B and saving some cap

It was a shameful period. Even when they were 1a and 1b, reimer consistently drew the second of back to back. The leafs completely fixed the competition. No wonder they blew up the team. Everything about it was incompetent from a mgmt perspective.

Yeah he drags a shitass team with horrific coaching into the playoffs all by himself and even almost steals the first round series for them, and then the first thing they do in the offseason is rush to replace him with another midget backup goalie. Blaming their young homegrown goalie for all their problems and then proceeding to shatter his confidence over the next two years of favoring shitty Bernier over him over and over and over again.

Just brutal.

I would have loved to see how good Reimer could have been if he didn't have the concussion problems during a 2-3 year stretch. Aside from that his only other below average year was the year every Florida goaltender got pasted.

People say this now but the narrative at the time was very different, especially here on the Leafs HFboards.

There was a lot of finger pointing of blame for the legendary Game 7 collapse and the vast majority of it got unfairly directed towards Reimer by both the fanbase as well as the team's management and leadership (lead by Dion Phaneuf).

It's not unlike the criticism Andersen gets.

This board, and its desire to find whipping boys, is shameful. Criticize, ok, eviscerating a young player who’s greatest crime was playing net for a weak team is simply wrong.

I wouldn’t mind Andersen/ Campbell duo for 3 or 4 years. Andersen is going to get better moving forward. I want him back and if there is a better option I’d sure like to discuss it. I’ve looked at Ufa’s. I don’t see where a improvement over Andersen is coming from.
3 years @ $5,500,000 and signing bonus perks would get it done. If we can get a return for the same money great. Someone will offer him $6,000,000 possibly. Then they can have him. We roll with Campbell and grab more goaltending depth that are all competent backups.
For the right money i would prefer the devil we know and teammates trust

Not sure who is available this year in UFA tbh that's really really worth a look. Rask, Rinne, Binnington I believe are the top names. A lot of it will come down to if they need to cut costs in the crease to accommodate players like Hyman and Rielly coming up in the near future. I think the cap will be staying flat so could be some squeezes necessary. That said, that could effect how much people wanna pay for a goalie. The market was certainly down this year for a lot of Free Agents

But all of what was said was 100% true ... Leafs dumb*ss GM traded for a bust 1st round pick goaler named Bernier and he thought he was da cats meow ... and he gave him da starters job which he did not deserve ... it will kill every team when things like that get done ... guys know things are not be handled professional and things fall apart ... especially after Reims had carried Leafs to game 7 as has been noted 2 of games we won we were completely dominated in every respect but Reims won them anywho ... we need a goaler who can win a game or two in playoffs team did not deserve to win ... game 7 was another gong show but coach, Phaneuf and Reims did fall apart in 3rd ... made me sick to see Phaneuf watch Chara do that to us ... I realize he would likely have been hurt badly but a captain must die with ship and he never even tried to take out Chara in front of net ... I would have chopped his ankles, cross checked him as hard as i could and if I couldn't move him I would have done a bad cheap shot which would have forced him to fight me even if I would have got destroyed .. just get da ogre away from ur net so Reims could see da puck and give him a freakin chance ... and coach should have asked someone else to do da dirty work if Phaneuf declined ... that was a game that should have been won with old time hockey moves

As soon as I see:

I stop reading.

Why do you insist on posting like this? Why not just stick to the English language like the rest of us?

Young Reimer plus a few nice young offensive pieces (Kessel Kadri JVR Gardiner) drag that team into the playoffs for the first time in eons and the front office goes out and adds BERNIER CLARKSON AND BOLLAND, and then re-sign Phaneuf to a huge contract, completely blowing our cap for years.

What an absolute disaster of an offseason.

Thank God we have dubas now.

I would re sign him to a 2 or 3 year deal with a 4mil aav. I wouldn’t go any higher than that.

less money for an average and possibly declining goaltender is not a recipe for success

I don't know where the Leafs are going to find the guy who is the right guy, but in my mind Freddie just isn't that guy

Depends who's available to replace him at a reasonable price.

UFAs: Rask, Binnington, Rinne, Dubynk, Raanta, Grubauer, Mrasek
Not looking great.

Trade: Is there anyone that is
1. Available
2. 6m or under
3. Better than Andersen,
4. TML has enough assets to acquire

Freddie on the open market probably gets 4y x 7m. Someone will give it to him it's just the way UFA works.

Might get 3x6 to stay in TO if signed pre-July 1

Possibly two tiered market for Goaltenders. The building teams with cap space and the capped out team that have to sit down and really prioritize needs. I’m not in to over paying a goalie either. I trust Campbell if Freddy prices himself out. We would really still need to build up goaltending depth at backup then. Kerfoot is the closest player on the team you would think as next cap casualty.
