Speculation: Do the Leafs need a temporary goalie?

Woll doesn't look like he'll be the answer. Hutchinson isn't very good and if they won't play him, I don't see how they have any choice but not to get another goalie. Trusting that Mrazek will be fine once he comes back is a risky proposition, IMO.

Woll was fine. Definitely there’s first game jitters for everyone, but he looked big in there.

I think there’s only a couple of back to backs left before Christmas. So Woll gets maybe 3 more starts. If he goes 1-2 vs us trading assets for someone who goes 2-1, and Woll gains experience while the team sees what they have in him, that’s reasonable.

Two goals weren’t on Woll, but he should have stopped the other two.

Woll's performance would lean towards yes.

Woll had VERY little to do with that win, I don't think Campbell let's in 1st goal, 2nd goal and possibly not the 4th goal either

The sky isn’t falling today. We won. No, he wasn’t very good, but everyone knew he isn’t NHL ready yet, but even in a full of nerves first game, he did well enough to help us win.

Somehow, he outdueled Dell, a NHL goalie with 115 games under his belt. Plus we didn’t give up any assets for our one win.

I also believe you were upset when Dell was claimed off waivers from us, who was worse than Woll on this ONE game.

Wait.

Some of you are giving up on Woll after one game. Not even a bad game to boot?

Fml some of you don't know hockey.

First goal is complete dumb luck.

Second and fourth are defensive breakdowns. Think he had to move laterally on both.

The third goal was the one where he's a little to off to one side, but was screened by 2 leafs, so not sure if he saves it anyhow.

Everything that went in was off an advantage to the shooter.

He made some decent saves. Stayed square to the shooters. Didn't over commit on any of his lateral moves. Was calm all game. Pretty much all you can ever expect from a backup.

I would love to watch him play one where the team in front of him actually helps him out.

This isn't a realistic take. Watch the highlights again.

The 1st goal was a one timer from the point that goes just wide. Woll came out to cut the angle down and was in the correct position. The puck takes a hard bounce from behind the net and pops out to the other circle where Skinner one times it. The only way he stops that is if he had stayed deep in his net on the original shot, which is the wrong play. No goalie is stopping that. There is a reason why teams use that as a set play.

The 2nd goal was a one timer through 2 bodies which is nearly impossible to track. Not a weak goal but stoppable if the goalie gets lucky.

The 3rd goal was a giveaway from Dermott to right below the hash marks. Woll quickly comes out to cut the angle and challenge the shooter, like he should but the guy does a one touch pass to the open man back door to take a one timer. Another unstoppable puck. Where was the coverage?

The 4th goal is the weak one that every goalie should have. It was a shot from the point with no bodies in front to obstruct his vision and he allows it through the body. He needs to have that.

He was more than fine in this game for being his NHL debut. My only issue with him was he got caught swimming at times which has been a bad tendency of his in the AHL. His positioning and rebound control was pretty solid and I didn't think he looked out of place. I was expecting a rough night and was overall fairly happy with his performance.

Seemed like a typical Marlies game for him.

Gives up a bad goal, but then has 3 other ones where you just wonder what the heck the defense is doing...

At the end of the day, he gives up 4 goals but he is the main reason why they didn't give up 8 goals. Save percentage sucks, but he played much better than it suggests.

Woll is a big frame and a lot of marshmallow stuffing. He was very bad at playing the puck, he seemed to trip over his pads a lot. He would swim from time to time. He also didn't have a lot of athleticism.

I say that TOR needs a goalie for the following reasons: Mrazek hurt too soon and too often, Hutch not so talented, Woll probably less talented than Hutch.

Exactly. If he continues to constantly give up 4 goals, then I would say you need to come up with a save every once in a while. But you are only as good as your defense allows you to be. If the team is constantly giving up these back door chances because of a lack of coverage, then people are pointing the finger at the wrong person.

He looked better than I expected. Hopefully he continues to grow. I've always liked him and his skill set but he needs to have a good year or 2 here or he is going to get passed by Kallgren and Petruzzelli soon.

Lol we won and we're still complaining, the role of a backup is to hang in there long enough to give us an opportunity to win, he did that.

Now there's better back ups out there obviously, but he's not ready and we know that, Mrazek will be back at some point we don't need to be spending money at a position that is fine just injured.

He's not the second coming of Campbell, but he's still young and NOT EVEN THE BACKUP, the backup is injured.

It's all good in Leaf land boys and girls.

Leafs nation baby. Entitled fanbase.

You can want and expect greatness, but not to the point where every player and every minute played is great or perfect. Not how the game of hockey works.

That was Woll’s first game in the NHL, and his team was a defensive tire fire. The Dahlin goal he’d like to have back, but losing your stick as a goalie is like a dog losing their tail. I’ll give him a pass on that. He was shaky playing the puck all night, but again first game on a new team will do that.

is he the temporary answer? I see no reason not to at least give him another game. By the time Mrazek is back, we may only need him to get in the cage 1 or 2 more times. There’s really no reason not to give him that exposure. If he blows up, so what. It’s a valuable learning experience for a young tendy

Goalies take a while no matter what, Woll isn't helping tomorrow.

Campbell has been fantastic.

Mrazek looks like a poor choice for our second goaltender, expensive and injury prone. I think they're going to be looking to move him in a soft deal as soon as this summer.

This endless carousel of waiver moves/trades to accommodate or secure “better” backup goaltenders needs to stop. Woll needs to play 2 games tops before Mrazek is back.

This early in the season you can ride Campbell, spell him off on back to backs and ease his load once Mrazek is back.

Woll wasn’t perfect, but if the team played better in front of him there would be no discussion. He’s fine.

Entitled? The last time TOR won a playoff round was 2004. Hard to imagine leaf fans want a whole lot considering they've been given very little.

Guessing the market for an injury prone backup making 3.8mx2 will be slow so it will cost to get a team to take him. Even if Soupy had sh1t the bed this year. Mrazek was not the answer given his recent history of injuries.

Is expecting one Pro season with a .900 save% considered "greatness"?

Then log off until the playoffs if that is the only thing that matters to you.

Seems like a rather simple solution.

I just always assumed that would be the case with Mrazek, the two extra years were insurance if Campbell either faltered or priced himself out of town.
next year will be either Campbell or mrazek and a cheaper back up.
