Do Avs still trade Rantanen if they know he ends up in Dallas?

Colorado could've easily avoided this outcome if the GM wasn't being shady trading him off without any notice, stifling any attempts from Carolina to come to terms with an extension before making the deal. If they do that, Rantanen likely gets them much more from another team or at least Carolina.

But the original trade is working well for Colorado, so their GM doesn't give a shit, lol.

This is why, in any profession, you always gotta put yourself first. f*** all the emotional manipulation of "we're like a family" or "you gotta put the team first", the businessmen are gonna run their business and you are just a number amongst numbers.

Rantanen played hardball in negotiations and it got him traded. There's there nothing at all shady about that. And if we'd allowed Carolina to negotiate with Rantanen, we wouldn't have even gotten Necas. So... I feel like CMac did fine here.

Hard to say, but all I can say right now is that this year is a dream scenario for haters of the current playoff format, because it very much looks like some combo of the following is guaranteed to happen:

1. DAL vs COL in the 1st round, despite both being top 8 league-wide and top 4 teams in the West (let's say) and loaded up at the TDL for long runs, all just because they are in the same division as the #1/2 team

2. VGK's reward for most likely winning the Pacific is facing COL in round 1, while EDM gets a lesser team from their own division (LAK).

The only way 1 of these 2 scenarios doesn't happen is if DAL or VGK somehow overtake WPG, when the gap is currently 8 / 10 points (though with 2 games in hand)... :help:

I think it all worked out fine for Colorado, but why would Necas have been off the table in that scenario? I'd expect the Avs would've been able to extract much more from Carolina if they had an extension guaranteed.

Because obviously Rantanen wasn't actually going to sign a contract with Carolina..... and they would have realized that.

Ah, gotcha. Let Carolina take the gamble as opposed to Colorado gambling by letting them discuss an extension beforehand and risk the trade altogether.

Well, I'm glad it worked out the way it did for both of our teams then, lol.

That'll be interesting. On the one hand dude was instrumental in bringing us a cup.

On the other hand, he dicked around with us on a contract Extension all year just to sign with a big rival for basically the same money we offered him?

I would think most fans would care more about the first part over the 2nd part. But some fans for sure will probably boo him. I know I would.

I actually think even more so that the Avs players will take this more personally. Mack, Cale, Landy... I bet they make a point to finish every check as hard as they can on Mikko moving forward.

I thought I read there weren't even many negotiations between Rantanen and the Avs before they betrayed him, I mean traded him.

As of right now Dallas (Rantanen) and the Avs play each other in the first round. I'm sure lots of people are hoping it happens.

Avs can't be happy about trading a player to the other conference only for them to end up with their first round opponent.

Dallas thinks they’re getting MacKinnon version of Rantanen, when in reality they’re getting the Aho version, possibly a worse version. Dallas’ best player might not be ready for playoffs and they may have just blew up their salary structure. He will help on the power play, for sure tho.
It's funny how pre-trade discussions of Rantanen's value had Avs fans telling us all how great he was when not playing with McKinnon and how elite he was in his own right.

Now for some reason he is a product of McKinnon and Makar...what changed?

If Avs and Stars face each other in the playoffs, it's going to make for an interesting storyline. \

And I hope Avs and Canes fans don't boo Rantanen. They should be giving him a standing ovation with a nice video tribute.

Stop finger wagging other fanbases. It’s not your place to do that.

Says the guy who can’t even spell MacKinnon.

There will of course be a tribute for Rantanen Sunday and loud cheers, and probably some tears in the stands. They did a tribute for Georgiev, so.

Rantanen isn't that soft, is he? Did they have extensive negotiations? I thought the Avs just decided to go in a different direction rather than paying what he likely would ask for.
The rumor is they offered 8*$12M. He or his agent declined and wanted more so they shipped him out before he knew what hit him. Now this feel slike a spite move to go a rival especially if CAR did offer $13.5M, but I may be making that part up.

He stopped moving his feet and became a passenger. We’ll have a better idea of what kind a player he is when he shows up to training camp next year. In shape or not.
