He has a very short leash with Woody. He was partly responsible for the first goal against with his weak board play and clearing attempt, but he also provides good physical play and has the ability to score big goals.

Seems like a smart and not unexpected agent negotiation tactic for a RFA coming off a one year deal of $750,000. Russian players always have the leverage point to return home and earn a paycheque in an inferior pro league. Kostin has built a pretty solid base with his NHL career do-over in Edmonton so he will have to choose where his priority is. Personally I think he'll stay in Edmonton and continue to grow his game with and against apex competition. But can never begrudge a person who chooses to maximize career earnings with the finite timeline involved as a pro athlete.

Being played 3 minutes is pretty ridiculous as well. Guy has 20-30 goal potential.

I wish I knew what sort of money he could expect to earn in the KHL. Teams have $12M US salary caps so one would wonder if he could make as much in the KHL as he would by riding it out in the NHL even with the tax situation.

I wish I knew too. Russian graft is almost universally legend including securing a World Cup. In a professional league run by Russian Oligarchs I'm not bound in faith to believe a small thing like a $12M US cap cannot or would not be worked around if the scenario was worth it. Feel fairly safe in saying Kostin isn't that level of player. However leverage point still exists and can and should be exploited for a contract negotiation. Which is all I see from this opportunistic 'reporting.'

Without the SH time on ice Bjugstad played a little over 5 minutes and he is a centre.
As @Behind Enemy Lines mentioned the lack of PK time really hurt Kostins ice time.

Quite honestly I wouldnt mind seeing Bujstads time get cut even more in favor of McLeod.

What has McLeod done other than skate fast? As you've said just don't play Bjugstad against Eichel.

Kostin has as many playoff goals as Kane and Hyman and more goals and points than Yamamoto.

Kane-McDavid-Bjugstad
Foegele-Draisaitl-Hyman
Janmark-RNH-Kostin
Holloway-McLeod-Ryan

Yamamoto can sit.

McLeod is playing a reliable defensive game (sometimes against some of the oppositions best players no less) and on top of that he has 4 points.
His skating is a weapon for sure and he has earned the coaches trust IMO.

I have no doubt that KHL teams are looking at KK, but I would be shocked beyond belief if he goes back to Russia. Look at any interview he has given to see how much the guy loves Edmonton. He also just turned 24 last week. Why would he even entertain that idea? Given his price point and the Oilers cap situation they would be incredibly stupid not to re-sign him. And if they don’t, I’m sure he’ll get an offer from another NHL team.

Less than a year later and it's looking like both teams are going to have nothing to show for it.
Yes, but the Oilers had something to show for it all year. And St Louis never had that.
And given St Louis didnt qualify him, I think its reasonable for one to believe Oilers wouldnt have.
See, its a win

Probably an extra 6mil or so in Katz pocket book from extra revenue by making it to round 2.

Saved asset in not having to add another bottom 6 player during the year
That too.
This shit isnt complex

It wasnt a nothing deal. Kostin was very good for us last year.
It was a great trade.
Oilers rarely win these nothing deals. These are exactly the type of deals a good gm should win more often than not when you have the best offensive power in the league.

Kostin became a fan favorite but when you look at our LW depth who does he play above next year? Kane, RNH, Foegele are locks and Holloway needs playing time. RW is wide open with only Hyman and Ryan as natural RW's. He needs to bite the bullet and sign a 2 year deal for a fair cap hit which could end up earning him much more in the long run.

I think it's just a bluff. Who wants to live in Russia these days, whatever the pay in the KHL? Kostin is a useful player, but he's ultimately dispensible, like most guys in the bottom six. Will be interesting what Holland does. I guess McDavid, Draisaitl, RNH, Kane, Hyman, Ryan, maybe McLeod, and Holloway are locks. Foelege, Yamamotoro may get traded. Bjugstad and Janmark may be gone to. That's 4-5 players that may have to be replaced.
