A little zing to these quotes

Jacques Martin said he met with the #Sens goalies when he first started: "I explained to them that I feel a lot of times the goalie is an end product of how you play in front of them, away from the puck. I don't think over the years - this is one area of this team that has got a lot of talent and skill, but I don’t think they’ve been very effective, they’re leaving their goalie dry if you ask me."
Martin added: "Goaltenders like Talbot, he’s a good example. Didn’t have a great year here, goes to LA and he’s one of the top in league.""They’re (Korpisalo and Forsberg) good goalies, they’re in the NHL for a reason and it’s our job as coaches to get the team in front of them, cut down on the number of A chances from the slot to try to give more shots from the outside so they have a better chance of making saves."

I think it’s tough to point to « results » after 4 games but if you’ve been reading the thread tons of improvements have been identified.

Full assessment of results will take a larger sample. Still lots of bright spots.

I don’t think it’s particularly fair to raise the fact that Pittsburgh is a terrible team while not mentioning that they are way ahead of the sens, that the leafs are a playoff team and that the sens two losses under Martin came to two playoff teams including a division leader/cup contender.
There's less stretch passing going on which by default means they are closer together on the break outs. That leads to more short pass options. It's different. Yes. Better? Idk.

I'm just highlighting we've got 4 of 8 points. The opposition 5 of 8. And coming off a break, we weren't ready to play.

Hopefully the differences translate to results

It's like he's been saying what a lot of people on here have been saying for years who, according to some aren't qualified to provide an opinion because they don't work in the NHL.
Well even according to DJ. All the the critics have no right because if they knew so much they would be coaching.

Saying that. I don’t 100% agree with Jacques here.

Not sure how much that had to do with, flying in the same day, and starting off the first period slow.

I think it is. Low percentage breakouts/turn overs leading to extended opponent zone time and lack of defensive support from forwards/blowing the zone have been a long standing issue with this team.

Changing the break out to have the players closer together with more passing options for the defensemen contributes to addressing those issues while hopefully ensuring more possession time for the sens.

I guess we’ll have to see how it develops but with the natural puck moving talent on this D and a structure which helps make breakouts more player friendly, I think it will lead to better results.

Again that’s a tiny sample, but you could just as easily choose to highlight that 4 out of 8 points gives us a better points % under Jacques than under DJ this season.

You could also choose to highlight that despite coming out not ready against the leafs (which sucked), second periods seem to have improved.

Inconsistency period to period has been a hallmark of this team for years, it’s not fair to expect that to change in 10 days. It’s definitely a work in progress.

Lots of guys saying play has improved under Martin.

I agree the team needed a change and I'm 100% good with Martin taking over and Alfie onboard

But what data shows improved play? What eye test? There's been some tweaks to the system that are somewhat evident but has that resulted in improved results?

We blew two multi goal leads and didn't get a point in either. We beat an awful penguins team in OT after blowing a two goal lead and that first period against Toronto was f***ing terrible. Great comeback win, but we were terrible and "not ready to play" which is something the former regime was heavily criticized for.

We also need to see how this team responds under Martin when they do string together a few wins playing hard.

They had lots of really good stretches over the last season season and a half. When they started to have success it seemed to quickly go to their heads. They would stop doing the hard things, thinking they could just show up and beat teams.

I think the team always tried hard, they just didn’t have a system they could be successful with under DJ. DJ seemed to believe there were some nights you had it, and other nights you don’t and that as kinda up to just nature and not coaching.

DJ Smith was a positive guy, so positive in fact when his team was out of the playoffs for 6 years and last in the NHL he said “this isn’t rock bottom” - god only knows what a bad day in DJ Smith land is like

almost everyone here blames the goalie like they are what's keeping us from success.

goalie stands on his head for 40 minutes and lets in one bad goal? "****** goalies"

I agree with Martin, but the goalies have also been bad.

I think the goalies have been truly terrible in their own right.
Thats a different statement. The message is cut down on grade A looks from the slot and it will help the goal tending. Not sure how anyone can disagree with that. No matter what less looks from the scoring area is something to strive for.

I didn’t read jacques specify grade A chances from the slot. Missed it.

I read he just mentioned leaving them out to dry and talbot coments. Talbot was bad.

Good, nostalgic article featuring Bonk, with his thoughts and expectations from Jacques.

The 47-year-old expects Martin will get Ottawa pointed in the right direction — just like his first go-round.

"(Crappiest) team in the league and then Jacques came over," said Bonk, who also played for the Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators and five more years in the Czech Republic before retiring in 2014. "He gave us direction. Showed us that, 'Hey, you guys want to win, this is how you've got to play.'

"We became one of the best teams in the league."

Bonk added there was never any doubt where things stood with Martin. The same should go for the current Senators' core that includes Brady Tkachuk, Tim Stutzle, Josh Norris and Thomas Chabot.

"Holds you accountable," he said. "He'll be good for the younger kids. If they buy into his stuff, they'll be better."

You really need to listen to the whole segment to get the full picture of what he was saying. The Twitter snippets are fine but don’t ever paint the full picture, and often add or omit meaning by their very nature whether the poster means to or not.

Jacque is basically wanting the defence to cut down on the unobstructed quality chances in close, which leave the goalies hanging out to dry. He wants the chances to come from further out so the goalies have a better chance to make the save.

It was meant as a nice boost for the goalies who have been under siege, let them know that he doesn’t think they are the problem. Also lets the team know that they need to play better team defence to help the goalies out.

Again, nothing new beyond publicly backing the netminders, but important in my opinion. It’s another example of the coach letting the players know that they are to blame here and need to learn to play better as a group in the defensive zone (accountability).

Is this team bad or is this team bad?

For a while I was thinking they are clearly not as bad as the record shows. They are.

They're really bad.

Top 10 pick is a lock for this year.

At least there are a lot of D in the top of the draft this year. Lets hope we can get a good RHD.
