Confirmed with Link: DJ Smith fired, Jacques Martin in as interim, Alfie as assistant

Part of the blame has to go to the FYOUS, that set ridiculous expectations that were never in reality, and never an actual plan, that I think many still think they have a timeline that coincides and falls in line with that

This team has not been, and is not, ready to take a step into a playoff team. The conference is full of teams ahead of the curve, with as many good players as we have. There is still work to be done, that will hopefully begin in April. The sale of the team pushed the team back a full year minimum for coming online.

Why is changing a coach made out to be some sort of catastrophic decision. Changing the coach before the season started would have been better than doing it mid season regardless of when the season starts.

Andlaur and Staios weren't even convinced themselves that DJ was the guy hence going out and getting Martin to advise in a senior role.
I can’t think of one team, that fired a coach, a week before season starts, I can think of a couple that happened about 8-10 games in.

Yes.

Chances are this team would be playing much better, bercause none of the players give a f*** about Dorion. Only you guys do . What he did two years ago was a fireable offence...but right then and there was stupid, and just a show for the Ottawa fans to soak in this new regime. What it really did was neuter Staios from firing DJ a month ago, when we had all those games in hand. He was going to get fired, no matter what, but there was no planning for how to run this team. No backup plan . They figured this team was going to be good, and they were naive and caught with their pants down when this season went to shit before Sweden. It was obvious.

So they brought in a coach who was talking to AJ every Wednesday and his glory days amounted to no Cups with this frnachise. And they brought in a HOFer with no coaching experience to play keepaway with the children. Fine for interim? I guess? The far and away oldest coach in the league may have a heart attack from all the travel he now has to do, but ok
Having only taken over in September - there wasn't really much he could do. Once camp starts teams aren't willing to allow their staff to move around generally. I would say they've done an admirable job bringing in respected staff/support given their hands were pretty tied with the date they got the keys to the team.

It was pretty obvious from the get-go. Only @coladin doesn't get it.

The messaging from day 1 was "we have a lot of work to do". Not, "we're ready and expect to win."

They did everything they could to temper expectations.
okily dokily

Every prognosticator felt otherwise. You never argue in good faith, it is so obvious

"Every prognosticator" is not Andlauer and Staios. Find me a quote where they say that the goal this year was winning, playoffs, or they thought they were on the verge of any real success?

Beech, they knew the investigation was ongoing in the summer and a decision was expected on what the punishment was going to be. They knew he f***ed up. They just didn't realize that it was going to be forfeiture of the 1st round pick. So , Andlauer and Staios still kept Dorion around with that information.
do me a favour, read #430.

You are business man.. I am an Engineer.. both are similar.. Be prepared, always have a plan.. never be caught off guard.. Know the answer, before the question is asked.

What is happening is smacking of: being caught off guard. Actions appear to be reactions.....

If they believed that Dorion was their man, then a #1 forfeiture should not have resulted in his firing!!!! why would it.. why should it?

If they felt DJ was their coach, why fire him now?

When Andlauer says: the Final straw.. what was straw 1 to one before the final???????? To hire Martin as consultant 12/13 days ago!!! why? If they felt a need, why not day 1?

So much is coming of as being amaturish.

If I was working for you, and behaved as they did... I would be fighting you for severance now.

Yup. They've been a step behind since they took over. Guy's been on the job for months just evaluating the team. Like, does it really take that much time to evaluate? Everyone and their grandmother knew DJ had to have a short leash to start the season. 10 f***ing games ago, we were .500 with lots of runway ahead of us. A 3-7 record later and the season is over. At the end of October, we were 3-4 and on a 3-game losing streak. You could have ended it right there and made a change. It took how many days from that point to do literally anything? Less than 2 weeks ago they appoint Martin a senior advisor. Yesterday they finally fire the coach after losing 5 of the last 6 games. What was he evaluating? What criteria hadn't been met yet for dismissal?

Instead of promoting the AGM we have to an interim role so the POHO can stay focused on big picture things, they instead appoint the guy with no NHL experience doing either the POHO role or the GM job to do BOTH. This is f***ing outlandish. An entire season wasted because of indecisiveness and inexperience. What a way to ingratiate yourself to the fans who bought tickets BECAUSE ownership was changing hands, they expected a good season and thought things would be handled competently going forward.

And instead the owner's out there making smarmy comments about "the guys in section 320" or whatever the f*** it is like he's so clever and so much smarter than the average fan. If Melnyk had said anything close to that, the fans would have bought the entirety of the Rideau Center to turn it into one giant Melnyk Out billboard that could be seen from the ISS.

There is no way i would have thought that a change in ownership was going to miraculously change things on the ice, in the first couple of months of this season… and yes, ownship, no matter who, past or present, actually do know more than the average fan, in terms of the inner workings of the franchise, and the personnel who work for it.

Keyboard quarterbacks assume they know more than the actual people involved in the franchise, at any level.

The instant gratification, overnight delivery generation, doesn't seem to relate to the tried and true steady and methodical approach this new owner, and the upper management have clearly explained to anyone who cared to listen, how they were going to approach this season….anyone has the right to disagree, and complain about it, but they shouldn’t have been surprised by it.

Everything Staios and Andeluer have said tells me they did not think this team was good, quite the opposite.

The went out of their way to tell everyone this team had a long way to go before the season started.
So why did they keep both Dorion and DJ on to start the season? "This team is quite the opposite of good...hmmmmmmm, let's keep the guys in charge in place!"

How the hell does that thought make any sense to you? And before it gets repeated for the umpteenth time that they took control of the team late in the preseason, they could have still had a plan in place when they took over.

For instance, why didn't Andlauer hire someone with experience to come up with a short list of GM and coaching candidates that the Melnyk daughters could have started the process with? Why didn't the Melnyk daughters hire Staios at the beginning of the summer, on behalf of Andlauer?

"Hey board of directors, have you thought about making some personnel upgrades? *wink wink nudge nudge*"

So, the team is not good, the coach is not good and the GM is not good but they waited for the season to be over before they did anything? It's complete nonsense.

I can't think of a team as badly ran as the Senators in recent times.

Owner was a POS, ended up dying. Unqualified GM took over. Unqualified GM hired an unqualified head coach. Unqualified head coach was here for 5 years and finished near the bottom in almost every season.

Unusual and toxic circumstances all around. Firing the coach nearly 1/3 of the way into the season is unacceptable.

Also these guys were running on a shoestring budget with a skeleton staff. It's not surprising that they chose to first staff the org with an analytics expert and a coach mentor and a player development coach, and see how they make out before making changes.

Lol what? Both Dorion and DJ will receive the remainder of the salary owed to them. They're still getting a paycheque.
Sadly, I meant Andlauer and Staios..

DJ and Doron should be rehired at a way higher salary, just for the pleasure of firing them.

That’s not a terrible contract whatsoever. When healthy he produces.
take a look at 2024/2025 yo 2027/2028

tell me if you feel he is a 9.5 M player for 3 years, then an 8.5 M.

Now tell me how you trade that..

Jacques Martin -I don't think we have to change the system, the players are comfortable with it, but we have to take care of the little details.

Are you kidding!!! Darche would have jumped in, at any time..

32 teams, 32 jobs.. typically 5-20 years of service life.. 2-5 M in salary. Perks, privileges'!!!

Now consider that they open at a rate of 3-4 a year. 2 jobs are typically recycle (so a previously employed GM).. That means 1-2 new openings a year...

It is a moving train and you better be willing to jump on.. or it passes you by.

Every team has 2-3 AGMS/Director of scouting/senior advisers.. so 100 guys, 1-2 openings.

NHL HC
NHL GM
NHL POHO

these are sacred, Holly Grail jobs. If offered, if available you jump.. even if the train is moving.. Heck, you jump if it is a bullet train.
I doubt he would have. Most guys have integrity and if he made a commitment to the Lightning he wouldn't jump to another team just before the season started. Remember it's a small community and a person's word and actions always follow them around.

yes.. and they understand what a golden ticket looks like.

Canadian teams (USA teams are more cut throat), leave GMs in place for 7 years on average.
Contracts are typically 3, 4 or 5 years.

So a Canadian GM, on average gets 8-10 years of contracts.

so 8-10 years at 2-5 M.... 16-50 M.... All hockey people get it.. and understand..

An AGM is 300 K.. so 50-160 years to make it..

Hockey people get it.. they would not look so much as sideways at a person who jumps.. Nor see him as anything other than the Lucky Bastard, that they wish they were.

There is a reason Edmonton's Knoblauch cried... he guaranteed his family generational wealth.. Coaches are 3-6 years worth of contract life.. at 1- 5 M.. that is 3-30 Million.

integrity is not lying, it is being responsible. Guaranteeing your family generational wealth and security is part of integrity.

It’s all about AAV not actual dollars. We have gone back and forth on this before, Melnyk is dead and covered with dirt, AAV is now the critical number.

no.. it is in the NFL .. not the NHL.

all but 6-7 teams are NOT cash cows. The remaining 25 are cash sensitive.. And shelling out big dollars is a no- no.. unless it is less than AAV and unless it makes sense relative to performance.

No one is touching these contracts..

AAV is meaningless. It is for us the fans to play with... Andlauer and his 25 other cash strapped buddies, don't give a rats ass about it... The summary sheet of expenses for month X is what counts.
