Just a terrible decision in every way. He’s an awful manager. He’s been terrible at every stop. Every team he’s managed has improved after he left. Move him upstairs and use his strength which is recruiting dual-nationals where he’s admittedly been terrific.

They’re hosting the 2026 World Cup and they’ll have a golden generation of talent in their prime. Go get a premier manager to coach this team — there will be no shortage of suitors for such a unique opportunity.

The fact that they’re not even going to interview other managers is unacceptable.

Who I think will win: Holland (my one upset), France, Brazil, Portugal.

I don’t disagree about the disappointment in bringing Berhalter back but I’m not seeing much of a list of likely interested and obviously better options either.

He should want to head to Europe if he’s smart.

it is not meaningless

there are many people with their own perception of meaning
Which explains why the 3rd place game is always a wide open attacking game. If it mattered teams would grind it out like finals usually are. Instead we usually see 3-2 score lines and often the most entertaining game of the tournament.

But sure coming in 3rd instead of 4th is a big deal…

There are a ton of experienced and available managers right now who would coach circles around Gregg. Luis Enrique, Zidane, Pochettino, Roberto Martinez, Joachim Low, Rafa Benitez, Claudio Ranieri. Didier Deschamps is out of contract with the French team after this World Cup and is said to maybe want a new challenge. There are a lot of really good managers available at the moment.

Some of these guys would likely not be interested and/or cost prohibitive but why not at least try and swing big? You don’t think someone will be excited about the opportunity of leading the best team the USMNT has ever fielded in a World Cup cycle that’s ultimately hosted by the US in the first run of an expanded tournament? It’s a massive opportunity. Saying we should settle for Gregg because no one better would be interested is honestly crazy to me.

Those are some juicy names….but are any of those guys going to want to come here for a 4 year run? Feels like most if not all would rather wait for a top Euro job to open up.

This is a promising squad, but we‘re not (really) contending for a World Cup in 4 years, so we probably need someone with some personal US ties or at least ambitions to be here. Maybe the role and being a host nation, not having to stress about qualifying is more attractive than I give credit to….

Sorry but not a single one of those you mentioned would be even remotely interested IMO.

I take that back, I could see Martinez possibly being interested but I think he is pretty terrible. Maybe Low but I very seriously doubt it. Martinez would be better than Berhalter though so I give you that.

I think the game has passed him by but add van Gaal to your list. Definitely better than Berhalter.

Today’s presser:
"If I'm presented with a wonderful challenge, if there's a country that's a marvellous challenge it could well be that I continue to work as a coach for a bit. I am 71 years old, I look marvellous and incredibly young."

That’s fine, but my point is I could give you a list of 15-20 managers available who are better than Gregg without a ton of thought and all it takes is for one to be interested. I think you’re underselling the appeal for some managers who would be able to build a personal brand around this role. And the USSF is derelict in their duty if they don’t do a thorough search to find the best possible manager they can.

FIFA breathes a sigh of relief. These 0-0 ties going to penalties are killing the tournament.

Sports are a game of inches. Allison was an inch or two away from saving that deflected ball and Marquinhos was an inch from that ball hitting the post and going in. Croatia’s equalizer had to deflect at the perfect angle off that defenseman for it to go in. Very cruel.
