You watch teams like France and Brazil and realize how large the gap is between the top teams and everyone else. You have to play perfectly or catch them on a bad day (or both) to have a shot at a result. I think Brazil and France’s B teams would still be top five or six at this tournament.

Agreed it should be a good thing but we played in the Copa América in 2016, made it to the semis, and then proceeded to not qualify for the World Cup.

But a 16 team western hemisphere based Copa América in the future would be a lot better for US soccer development than the PoS gold cup we play in, IMO of course.

Also, reports are that Ronaldo had a confrontation with his coach and has been benched for the game vs the Swiss. Seems like he’s unraveling, strange to see.

I guess long term it won’t matter but he is definitely tarnishing his shorter term legacy. Get over yourself and be about the team. You are nowhere near the player you used to be and that is fine. Yes. It’s also the first year that FIFA is expanding the number of countries that qualify from 32 to 48.

This past cycle was likely the last “real” World Cup qualifying cycle. It’ll be markedly easier to qualify as I believe six CONCACAF nations will qualify from here on out. It’s why getting into high pressure tournaments like Copa is so important because qualifying won’t be an issue and the Nations and Gold Cups can’t be their only competitive matches.

If they are playing in the 3rd place match I would be shocked if Ronaldo didn’t start. It is a game that doesn’t squat and this is almost certainly his last World Cup. They are going to send him off respectfully IMO.
