I think both Toews and Nurse have been underrated by various folks in this thread, albeit at different times. Both are probably better than their "detractors" suggest.

I consider Toews to be a #2 defenseman. Nurse is a #1 defenseman. This discussion gets more interesting if contracts are taken into consideration, as Toews is on a steal of a deal and Nurse is not, but for the quality of player, contracts not considered, it has to be Nurse.

Toews led the team in TOI/GP in all situations and 5v5 in regular season and the playoffs.

He’s a more of a defensive defenseman, but an exceptional one and considering he’s the only guy who fits that description on the Avs he’s actually a critical part of their success.

Facing some top comp or not, Toews looks better by virtue of Makar being around. Nurse is the only dman other teams have to worry about and still outproduced Toews
