If you have an elite 3rd line center, it means you have 2 elite centers playing ahead of that guy. Teams with 2 elite centers will tend to be good. Especially when they have elite wingers and d-men around them.

Is it nice to have 3 good centers? Sure, but if you have no organizational depth at a certain position, say RD, then I'm not focusing on filling the 3rd line center spot with an elite player.

If Slafkovsky were 6' 0" do you think he's the favorite for 2nd overall? I honestly don't know but my knee jerk answer is "no."
If Slafkovsky were 6'0" he probably wouldn't be as effective down low and along the boards, so he probably wouldn't be the 2nd overall favorite because of that. The reason he's the favorite there is not just because of his size, it's because he uses said size very well.

If Logan Cooley was 5’6” do you think he’s in the conversation for 2nd overall. Probably not. Size is a factor. Slafkovsky’s size is a big asset especially because he actually uses it. Doesn’t mean that’s all he is. Has a lot more.

-Noah Ostlund should be available where the Devils pick at #37. There's no player in the 2022 draft more comparable to Cooley than Ostlund, he's terrific! Owen Beck is an absolute stud --

It would be one thing if "Cooley was clearly the BPA". But he's not.

but for me it's between Jiricek and Slafkovsky with Nemec third and trade down 4th and Nazar 5th

I can name a multitude of great 3Cs who will be available at #37 in the 2022 draft. But let's get a player with a shot at the first line or first D-pairing at #2 overall.
Tons of good points but I strongly agree with what I isolated for points .
Ostlund I can see rise like crazy and go in the first round, he is a very good prospect and has potential to be possibly top 10 in a redraft a few years down the road.

Im the same with preference in what to do with the pick. Slaf / Jiri #1 and #2 . Nemec #3 , trade the pick 4 , then …. I am not sure after that. Gauthier is too far of a reach so … I think Lambert but again , I’d rather try to fill a need the best I can amd Lambert doesn’t really do that as well as other options.

I don't know the answer to that, but I do know if you asked any question similar to that with anything else it would be picked apart.

If player X wasn't as fast as he is do you think he would go Y overall? Didn't have the puck skills? Didn't have the shot?

Basically it's a package deal of skill and attributes that makes a good player.

By quick glance, there is at least 10 people in the draft bigger and way more than that the same size as him, but he is projected to go 2nd OA. This doesn't mean it's not considered, but certainly shows that it's not all that matters.

Slaf has played in a limited bottom-6 role with so-so linemates for most of the season, therefore not in a position to showcase his toolbox at all.

After going off in a top role at the Olympics with 7 goals in 7 games, he was put in a top-6 role with PP time in the Liiga and got 6 points in 10 games. His production when used in a position to use his abilities to the maximum has been good.
Not going to make a big deal, however, Slaf did not have one helper at the Olympics. Just saying was it just a goal scoring hot streak? I need to see more of this kid.

No but he isn”t and it’s not THE only factor that makes him wanted. It’s his size PLUS his ability to be a beast along the boards , strong on the puck , drive toward the slot , net front presence. Add that size plus ability plus his soft hands l good shot , excellent vision and passing ability and add all of those up i to one package ! Then hell yes his size plus the entire package of skills and ability is very attractive !

Wow Slavkovsky just got off a shot they he had no business to and hit the crossbar. Kind of a bad drop pass he received with 3 guys surrounding him and somehow toedrag shot it. Super impressive and skilled play. So good. Montreal scouts are going to have some serious debate

There is no way MTL doesn't take the consensus #1 overall C, from Canada, in their own building. Just no way imo. If our scouts want Slaf, I firmly believe he'll be there and if Wright makes it to #2, you run to the stage and pick him.

That’s good news.
2 assists now! ;)

Solid first game from Slafkovsky. Could’ve had a few goals, some nice plays, and showed off his hands. Came out of it with 2 assists and a crossbar. Would’ve liked to see him use his physicality a bit more and he was trying to dangle a bit too much for the first half of the game. Was still very active down low and around the net though. Was probably Slovakia’s best player and certainly there most dangerous offensively.

Agreed. I don't even care about the assists. I wanted to see how he kept up with the speed, which is my main concern with him. Was impressed with his hands in tight spots (like that crossbar shot) and his relentless forcheck. Liked his clear at the end too, which ended up as an assist.

I came away remembering why I liked Nemec so much. The kind of defender you don't even notice and ends up all over the scoresheet. He will be the fastest to the NHL if I had to guess.

Slaf, not much negative to say. Similarities to Hughes in that the offensive instincts are great but you know a major adjustment period will be needed. I don't read too much into the dangling other than confidence. Guy expects to score and I don't think he forced too many plays and a few times made something out of nothing, which is exactly what you want to see from a top 5 forward.

I could easily see myself not giving a shit between all four guys being debated here. Considering who we have, we'll be fine. This is first world problems now.

How'd he look skating wise?
Really good. He's not the fastest skater but he's really efficient and uses his body to protect the puck very well. I was actually impressed.

That's pretty much how I see it. Realistically, we shouldn't even be here and with average goaltending we probably draft around 10th-12th. Having a top 5 pick, nevermind top 2 pick, is absolutely gravy. I'll be happy with any of Wright, Slaf, Jiricek, Nemec or Cooley.

We'll see how he looks against a faster team, but it definitely wasn't a detriment. I was worried bucause he looked slow in a couple analysis videos I saw of him. Even the clips where the analyst was showing that he was a decently fast skater made me feel like he was slow. Either they were bad examples or he's gotten faster.

Nemec wil not be the fastest to the NHL. Shane Wright will play next year. There’s like a 1% chance he doesn’t. So at best Nemec could match him but it’s more likely he takes 2 years. At best 1. Slafkovsky probably only takes a year and Cooley is probably 1-2 years.

He’s also a big guy. He doesn’t have to move his feet as fast to get to a decent speed but he still has decent foot speed. Sometimes big guys look like they’re moving slower than they are.

I meant of the guys we're talking about (Slaf, Jiricek, Nemec, Cooley). If we take Wright, yeah, he's on the team next year.
